General :: Installing Lilo Item When Drive Is Not Present
Oct 30, 2010
I have to computers: 'A' (linux) and 'B' (windos). On 'A' I have a linux system that i copy over to a movable disk on which i install the lilo bootloader. Now when I move the disk to 'B' I am able to boot into the new linux system, however I would like to have an item in the lilo boot menu from which I can boot the windows system on 'B' also. And now the tricky part: I would like to create this item when the disk is still on 'A' where windows is not present.
I have tried using "disk = /dev/hda1 inaccessible" without any luck.Is it possible to "cheat" lilo into adding an item pointing to a disk that is not present on your system ?

Im planning on installing a beta of my favorite distro to /dev/hdb from a mounted iso on an /dev/hda partition.Im not exactly a newbie, but i cant say i have ever done this before. Anyone aware of any issues i might encounter? Is lilo ok booting from one drive to another? Is it ok to just install lilo on the mbr of /dev/hda to boot a distro on /dev/hdb?

I have one machine with two disks that I'd like to install Slackware on. I'd like to have the root folder and installed folders on hdb, and just have have hda as a disk I can use for storage (without any home directories, etc.). My problem is, I don't know how to make this boot, as I think LILO is installed on the primary drive, but the boot folder is located on hdb. I tried doing this before and was having problems booting, so I was just going to go through the whole process again, but don't really know the correct procedures.

I have not seen a clear cut or concise way to do this. I have copied my Linux system (Debian Lenny) from my internal hdd(hda) to a 160 GB external hdd(sda) hooked up through USB. I want to be able to boot from this external hdd. The system BIOS will allow ... supposedly ... booting from a USB device. I am using LILO with the internal and would rather continue using it. I don't know if it is installed correctly on the external. I seem to doubt it.Can anybody tell me where to look for more info? Or perhaps enlighten me on how to install LILO into the MBR of an external USB hdd.
Any other tips would be great as to how to boot my Linux system off of the external

Basic Problem: I have been trying to install 13.1 (64-bit) and have not been able to get lilo to install.
Procedure:
1) partitioned drive /dev/sdc 1GB (Linux RAID) and 499GB (Linux Raid)
2) copied partitioning scheme to /dev/sdd
3) set up RAID-1 arrays md0 (sdc1-sdd1) and md1 (sdc2-sdd2)
4) write random data to partitions
5) set up LUKS on md1 (swluks)
6) set up LVM on swluks (80GB /, 375GB /home, 20GB swap)
7) ran setup, chose partitions, installed software
8) setup lilo (mbr, selected /)

I am running centos 5.4. I just installed eclipse from Application,Add/remove software. The version that installed was not the latest version. I can remove the version I just installed but how should I install the latest version? I was able to dl the lastest version but it came in a .tar.gz file eclipse-java-galileo-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz When I unzipped it, there was no install option but I was able to run it from the tmp folder.
I want to add a menu item under Applications, Programming to link to the latest version that I just downloaded but I haven't been able to figure this out. The 2 question I have are this: 1- Is there a way to have the latest version show up under Application,Add/remove software so that I can just uninstall the version I installed and get the lastest?
2- Is there a way to install the downloaded version and have it show up under Application, Programming? I love this OS but it's taking me a while to figure out some simple things.

why I get this message during startup? I have to chose efore I can start up my system."The disk drive for /data is not ready yet or not presentContinue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery"Once upon a time I had a partition with that label, but I've since deleted it and resized my system partition to use that space. Why does my system keep looking for this drive?

This is my first time on a forum and the first time I tried to set up a web server.I am following a tutorial on how to set up a web server here: [URL]We get to a part were I have to install a firewall. The tutorial suggests shorewall. The command I am told to use is sudo aptitude install shorewall. However is returned is could not find package shorewall. I have searched the net and could not find anything on my issue. I then attempted to search aptitude but no luck. I found shorewall online but how do I download it without a GUI.
This is also my first time having an OS that is only command line. I have done other things from the command line only before. Things such as computer science homework on the computer science servers. For simplicity, how do you install software off the internet on to ubuntu server without creating a CD or using a flash drive

I tried to upgrade to the newest ubuntu version (10.04 I think). Now I can't even boot my computer. After the initial "boot" stuff, the ubuntu screen comes on and then locks up in the process. I get the message "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery."I've tried "waiting" overnight to no avail. I tried the "S" command to skip and got the message "[141.233783] Adding 1502036k Swap on /dev/sdb5. Priority-1 extents:1 across:1502036k"
I think the manual recovery is what I need to do. When I type the "M" for manual recovery I get a maintenance shell with the last line being. Can anyone please give me some commands to fix this problem? I have an OLD ubuntu boot disk. How can I get my computer to boot from it? I tried hitting "esc" while booting up to no avail. I also tried hitting F1 while booting up. I think that used to allow me to boot from the CD drive...but doesn't work now.

I upgraded my computer from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and now the OS doesn't boot correctly. I keep getting the same error msg after selecting Ubuntu from the grub: 'The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present.' Underneath that line is the other msg: 'Continue to wait; press S to skip or M for manual recovery.'
I tried them both and if i press S then it gives another err msg: 'The disk drive for /tmp is not ready or not present' ; 'Continue to wait; or press S to skip or M for manual recovery' now if i press S then it shows a black screen with this msg:
Code:
mountall: Plymouth command failed
mountall: Disconnected from Plymouth
How do i recover my system now... I don't want to reinstall the whole of ubuntu 11.04 but i just want the old system back or Ubuntu 11.04 back in working order. I f i continue to wait nothing happens except the screen goes black. I know theres a way through the command line but how?

I'm familiar with editing Grub's "menu.lst" file to add additional OS's to the boot list. Does Slackwares Lilo have a similar config file ? I need to add a second physical drive with Windows 7 on it to the boot options in Lilo. If it's not a config file, how do I add a second os to it ? Slack and Windows are both already installed on two different physical drives so I won't be installing, I just need to add the Windows drive to Lilo.

no entries exist in the /dev folder for hdc, cdrom, dvd, or any other drive or drive type than hda. The only other similar device is sg0 which doesn't work either. I have tried every variation of mount I can find with every available drive and drive type and nothing works, but this is the drive I installed FC14 with, and it installed perfectly (except for forgetting where it came from!!)Do I have to install a module or recompile the kernel just to get linux to recognize the drive it came from?

I have a network drive connect to my lan with iomega's iconnect device. I am getting tired of mounting the drive manually each time I want to use it. I would like therefore to have it mounted automatically on boot by placing a line in fstab, but since the computer (a laptop) won't always be connected to my home lan, this might cause problems. Is there a way to list the drive in fstab so if the drive is not present it will just move on?

I have a very strange problem. My computer is unable to boot from any hard disk but is able to boot from any CD or DVD. I have double-checked the BIOS settings and I am unable to figure out why is this happening. I have noticed that the Windows installer boots from the CD only if one presses a key when the message "Pressany key to boot from CD..." is displayed on the screen, otherwise it boots from the first hard disk.I have a triple boot system with Windows 7 (64-bit), Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bit), and Fedora 14 (64-bit). I have a dedicated GRUB2 partion on one of my disks. What I want is a boot-loader (any would do) on a CD/DVD/USB drive to chain load the GRUB2 present on my hard disk, without a delay, that is, without showing any message, menu, warning, etc. So, is there a way to do that?

I am trying to install 10.10 from a Live CD over my 9.04 (it would not do the upgrade automatically due to apparently lack of disk space.) at the end of the my best guess at the process (alas, Linux is pretty much a plug and pray operation for me.), on rebooting, I get the message: "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" I must have messed up at the Allocate Drive SPace / Edit Partition step. I have three existing partitions:
7Gb for OS previously 9.04
35GB for data (which I clearly don't want to mess with)
a a bit for Swap.
So, I have clicked on the 7GB partition /dev/sda1 and have another window, Edit Partition, which is asking me: New partition size (I would just leave it at 7007) Use As (I presume I can leave it as EXT4?) Format the Partition (NO unchecked?)and Mount Point? Now here is where I don't have a clue. The pull down options are:
/, /home, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, etc.
not knowing any better, my first time through I just picked "/" and that is what got me to the message "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" So what should I be specifying at this point?

I've tried to use that thread to help but to no avail, i tried to use this:
[URL]
BUT I CAN'T OPEN A TERMINAL!!! as i am at a point where the screen says: Continue to wait, press S to skip or M for manual recovery. so if i run this command : gksudo gedit /etc/fstab my computer whines about there being no way to show this on the screen, I have tried this:
Use a non-graphical editor, like emacs or vi. Try Ctl+Alt+F3 -- you should get a login prompt. Login to an account with admin privileges (like, the first account you created, for example), and then type 'sudo vi /etc/fstab'; that will open /etc/fstab in the vi editor. Make your changes, save them, exit the editor, reboot... but if you're not used to working with a non-graphics-based editor, you'll have a bit of research to do. It's not hard, though, just tedious.however i have not managed to make it work.

I'm fairly new to linux, and a few days ago, as I was updating my system, I got the "EBDA is big ; kernel setup stack overlaps LILO second stage" error after reboot. I use a 3- boot, ( Win XP / Debian / Debian) and Windows XP works fine, but I can't launch any of the Debian. I googled the message, and I found this link :
[URL]
The only problem problem is that when I try to chroot, I got another message, "chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory" I googled this message too, but found no relevant answers. I am now using a knoppix usb drive to try to repair the lilo, but I ran out of ideas ...

On rebooting or initial start up intermittent problem:"The disk drive for /home is ready yet or not present." It seems to happen on a cold startup and if a change is made in init/default file. (addition of the numlockx package modifcation.) So far a second or third restart will find the directory and complete the start-up.
On a 120 gig hard drive I have these partitions:
4 gig swap
25 gig /
90+ gig (the remaining space) /home

I had previously partitioned my harddrive and installed Linux on one part of it. I had a few problems and didn't like the way Grub stayed when I removed Linux. Here's what I have now: I reformatted and have Windoh's XP on C drive with 70GB. I made a D drive with 70 GB.I want to install Linux on the D drive (I think...unless I shouldn't do that.) How will I access Linux if I do this? Will my computer boot into Windoh's by default as usual? Will I double-click on "My Computer" then choose The D drive with Linux installed on it? I don't want to have to go through removing the Grub thing as I had to do last time I removed Linux. My ideal thing would be to be able to double-click on D drive and run Linux without having re-start problems with my computer.I'm sorry if this makes no sense. I don't really know how to explain it.

I'm wondering if it's possible to create mail packages and put them into the postfix queue simply by writing files to the hard drive.Currently I have a script which uses a socket connection to dump the data in, but if I could write it directly to the hard drive this would speed things up considerably. Is this possible?

Im trying to post some data with curl. What I have is an html form that has many items. When I use a web browser to post data I can change one item easily. When I use curl (or wget) it will change the item that I tell it to but all other items in the form are erased. Im trying to write a script that will change just one item and preserve everything else. The problem is that I dont know what the values are before hand. Every example ive seen uses firefox addons or some other method to tell what to post. This would be fine but is not scriptable.
