way to install packages from a live CD/DVD. I have a live dvd that their are alot of apps I want off it, I would download them my self but I have very limited bandwidth. I have read about how to repackage the packages.

I want to install packages such as samba, openssh etc. from a CD rather than download it from the net each time I build a new machine. I am able to install them from the installation CD after using the �apt-cdrom add� command but what I want to do is burn my own CD with only the packages I require and install from that. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop.And I am going to install mediaplayer from its "*.deb" file, But it requires a lot of other packages and each of those packages needs others and so on.Since I do not have internet connection on my Ubuntu and my internet connection is in Win XP, so I should download these packages and then check them in my Ubuntu and see what other packages it needs and download them and so on.
It is a very time consuming task. If I could find out what are all the required packages I could download all of them at once and then I could install them by "sudo dpkg -i *".Therefore I am wondering if there is a way to know which packages are the required ones for a typical package, my work would be much more easier.

The way I have it configured right now, it just loads right up without a root menu or boot-options, just basically going straight to "hey, u ROOT or DEMO?" In another thread I was looking into burning backups from k3b as I run live because my DVD-player isn't behaving right now under windows... 'still working on that I want to get a backup done before I do a hard install. It's my goal to get either Kismet, wireshark, or Airsnort/crack/peek running on this machine so I can start gathering packets and doing analysis. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install Ubuntu Lucid Lynx using Live CD on this machine, a compaq Presario SR5010NX, with Celeron D 3.46Ghz CPU. Bios Version American Megatrends, Inc. 5.18, 2007; 2 gigs of RAM with approx. 140 gigs of hard disk space total useable. Has Realtek High Definition audio, graphic chipset Intel 82945G family; Soft data fax modem with smart CP (internal modem). It is connected to my DSL modem/router, Netgear DGN2000, with ethernet cable (as are my other two computers).
I start the installation. Finally the desktop shows up. As soon as I start trying to navigate, my mouse freezes and that's as far as I can go.
Just out of curiosity, I also tried to use my Mint 8 CD. It did the same thing. Gets the desktop up, then freezes. I am so frustrated because I really want Ubuntu on this machine. I planned on wiping out Vista Home Basic and giving the whole thing to Ubuntu.

I've tried to update packages, but when I reboot the updates that claim to have been made do not appear. The system reverts to its original state after reboot.
So is it possible to do this? Can one have persistent packages? (this does seem to work with ubuntu)
Or is F12 on a live USB stick supposed to be pretty much the same thing as having a live (read-only) CD?
What I'd really like to do is have a small version of F12 on a USB stick that has up to date packages I need while dropping the packages I don't need.
In the future I plan on switching video card brands and I was wondering if there is a way to delete or edit packages on a hard disk install from a Live CD?
Also, will switching brands of video card cause a fedora install to crash upon booting?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed F12 the other day and I've run into my first problem (this is not a knock, in fact this is probably the best release of Fedora 12 ever for me). Installing Skype from their website. I realise that I'm attempting to install an 1586 binary in x86-64 so it's risky, but that's not the point (yet anyway). I can't even get it to install. I've looked around and can't find anything meaningful on this (other than posts which provided no help). When I try to install the rpm from [URL] with the GUI, I get the message "This action cannot be completed" with the following under details: "The name org.freedesktop.PackageKit was not provided by any .service files". I then tried to install it from a root terminal and got the message, "Package skype-2.1.0.47-fc10.i586.rpm is not signed". Is there a way to change this behavior? And is there a temporary workaround (say, for just this app)? All in all, I love this release, but I cannot recommend Fedora 12 to someone new to Linux without alleviating this issue for them (I'm set to do this tomorrow). This would hamper their efforts to learn how to do basic things, such as installing a random program like Skype.
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust installed Fedora 12. After installing a new distro, I usually remove the individual programs that I have no use for or interest in. In Fedora, I've noticed that, for KDE at least, I can't remove just one program I have to remove the whole "group" of programs. For example, I might want only one game on my system and remove the rest but KPackageKit only allows to me to remove KDE Games (all of them) instead of just the programs I have no interest in. This is not the same as other distros I have tried. Is there a way around this?

My dvd-disk is not broken - md5 checksum is right. In sources.list I have only cdrom source, without any network repositories. When I install one package (for example pptp-linux) which don't use any depending, it work good, but when I have some group of packages - installed only first package from this group, you can see this in a first image, marked by yellow color and set to 16 percent.

I installed Slackware 13 last night and have been trying to get bittornado to properly work. Some background info, I have my partitions set up as follows:
Partition 1: /
Partition 2: /usr/local
Partition 3: /home
Partition 4: swap
I unzipped the tar.gz file and made a package using makepkg, and then installed it. Afterwords, trying to run "btlaunchmanycurses" or "btlaunchmanycurses.py" doesn't do anything. Further examining shows me that it installed the package to my / directory. Shouldn't packages be installed somewhere in my /usr dir? I'm new to linux, I spent some time with it a couple years ago but haven't done anything since.
