General :: KDE4 - Mount Flash Disks Etc. On The Desktop Like In KDE3?

Jun 28, 2011

my grandfather uses a linux machine for web browsing, emails etc. So he mostly uses Firefox, Thunderbird and sometimes also Skype and now he has also Jabber account. Currently there is Pclinuxos 2009 installed (the newest one with KDE 3.5). I used a frozen community repository, but this also brings the problem I cannot update the used programs as I am afraid it would attempt to replace the old KDE as well.

I know I can update Mozilla apps by downloading a static rpm and install with KPackage or Konsole and similar with LibreOffice. Not much friendly... I also discussed switching to other WM - but GNOME surely not, maybe Xfce (other ones have other issues).

Is it possible to somehow make KDE4 to behave like KDE3.5 in some ways? At least auto-mounting of flash drives etc.

Software :: Kde4 Panel Autohide As In Kde3?

Apr 15, 2010

I've just started to test kde4 that comes with slackware64-current. I've always used kde3 just because I can let the autohided panel to appear when the mouse hits the opposite side of the desktop (I think it is a sane behaviour to avoid to accidentaly unhide it while I operate on toolbars and buttons near the location of the panel), so I looked for the same feature inside the new uselessly eye catching d.e. and I couldn't figure out how to get this basic, but powerful, feature.

Software :: KDE3 KPager Be Downloaded And Compiled In KDE4?

Feb 4, 2010

I have been using openSUSE 11.0 for some time now and love the feel of KDE3. Especially KPager, which shows me at a glance what is open on each desktop. This is really important when I am doing cad design with my Win-XP CAD, running in vmware in one desktop, interacting with my linux CAD in another desktop, gathering data from the www with Firefox in another dektop, while my emails and Skype are on the 5th desktop. So, on a 'spare' pc I decided to try openSUSE 11.2, KDE4 version.

To keep it short, I am extremely uncomfortable with KDE4. It may be fine for wizzie, pretty applications but I find it extremely cumbersome - dare I say it - like Windows 7 and worse still, there is no KPager functionality. Can the KDE3 KPager be downloaded from source and be compiled in KDE4? If not, how long will KDE3 be around before it is superseded by KDE4?

Software :: DCOP - Running KDE3 Applications In KDE4?

Nov 8, 2009

I am trying to run the KDE3 version of Basket in KDE4. The KDE4 version is very buggy. I am running Arch Linux with KDEmod. The problem it seems is that Basket tries to connect to the DCOP server but fails, and then crashes. Of course DCOP is only in KDE3 and not in KDE4. So how do I go about running Basket?

Here is the output from the terminal:

DCOP is installed with the KDE3 dependencies. How do I properly run an app that requires DCOP? Or is there another workaround?

General :: Using A Flash Drive To Speed Up Conventional Disks?

Jun 12, 2010

Is there a possibility to use a flash drive as a speed up for conventional hard disks? I got the idea to redirect all read ops to the flash drive if the data is already stored there, and to read from the conventional disks if the data is not found there (and during idle time the freshly accessed data from the conventional disk is stored on the flash disk).

Is this already possible with linux standard tools?

Ubuntu :: USB Flash Disks Not Working In 10.04

May 27, 2010

After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 my USB flash disks no longer work properly. Some of them I cannot see at all. Others like my Kingston show up as Kingston & USB0 at the same time. I can see the files, but I cannot copy any files to the flash disk.

When I try to unmount I get a popup window saying:

If I try to eject or safely remove the disk by clicking on the Kingston icon, I get the following:

The only usb device that seems to work properly is my USB wireless dongle. My Samsung 1TB external drive works, but it appears as Samsung and USB1. If I click on Samsung, I cannot see anything. When I click on USB1, I see the files. This is a very annoying problem as I use my flash disks extensively.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Could Not Mount Disks After 15 Installation?

Jul 7, 2011

I`d like to know what happens when with the disks the we include in the installation process of Fedora 15.Obviously, the HD we choose to be the system is entirely formated and reconfigured. But what about the others?hat does happen to them? I`m asking this because I have included two brand new disks of 2 TB, one of them with 900.000 files and the other empty, both of them formated with ext4, and completely functional on Fedora 14.However, after the upgrade, in the very first Fedora 15 boot, these disks disapeared from "places", and could not be mounted even via terminal. Opening the Gnome Disk Utility, I found out they had been changed to VLM (instead of ext4) and that they also lost their original lable. I am starting to be concerned because all the data there was important to me.

OpenSUSE Network :: Is KDE4 Really Incapable To Mount NFS Shares On Demand?

Jan 3, 2010

I have some NFS shares on a server (say Desktop) to which the client (Notebook) is not always connected to. Even the server is not always up. To mount an NFS share in the past, I had some Device-Link icons on my KDE3 desktop. That worked fine. Now, SUSE 11.2 comes with KDE4. The NFS shares are properly configured in /etc/fstab as usual (including 'users' option). And now the big question: What is the official way to mount my NFS share on demand as an ordinary
user?

Desktop icons are not KDE4ish. And the Device-Link method doesn't work either, because it apparently doesn't take care of /etc/fstab (i.e. the users option) and insists on root privileges. Also Dolphin is not able to mount NFS shares when I need it because it
simply does not show them. The only way to mount my shares is to perform the mount command in a
terminal session. But this couldn't be the truth with KDE4, isn't it?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: USB Disks Not Mounting After The First Mount?

Feb 23, 2010

I'm having a problem with my usb disks, on opensuse 11.2. USB disks only mount the first time after booting.

The scenario is, I boot, then I plug a usb disk. It mounts properly and I can use it. After I unmount it and unplug the disk, I try to plug it in and it doesn't mount. And none of my other usb disks will mount as well.

The only workaround is to reboot.

I checked /var/log/messages, and the disk is being detected, it's just not being mounted.
