Turned on my computer this morning only to have my desktop come up as if I was looking in a mirror. The icons and taskbar etc are in the correct places, only everything is a mirror image. This is a per user problem as my wife's account is fine. I have tried deleting all of the plasma files in the ./config directory with no luck. KDE 4.5 on openSUSE 11.3NVidia graphics if that matters

Maybe it's to simple question but I don't know what to do.I have openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1.3. When I set desktop settings to display content of Desktop folder I can't drag files. They're fixed to their positions! I've tried different settings of folder view parameters but nothing helped.

I just updated to SUSE 11.3 and got the latest version of KDE 4.I'm not thrilled with the default theme (the taskbar running applications are really fuzzy) and would like to install a new one, but there isn't anyplace in the settings menu to change it. Did I miss something?
How do I change the theme?

i've 6 desktops, with a lot of icons organiced over themnyone in the place i like.Sometimes (once a mont or so) when i boot mi computer, all the icons on all the desktops apears reorganiced: All on the left side of the screen and all equally spaced. I don't want it to happen anymore because each time it happens i lose half an hour reorganicing them.I've tried to mark in the desktop the option "icons fixed", and I've tried to update KDE to the repo KDE instead of the one in the OSS repo, but nothing works, lately instead of disorganicing the icons once a week it happens each 3 to 7 days.

I have a new system with Asus M3A78-EM mobo, 4 GB RAM, AMD Phenom II quad-core 955 3.2 GHz CPU, on which I've installed the 64-bit version of openSUSE 11.2. It's a lightweight server as well as a desktop machine, and is on 24/7 (and on a UPS). The problem is that the system reboots itself spontaneously, on average a couple of times a day, at seemingly random times. After one of these reboots, an examination of the system log shows nothing at all suspicious logged in the minutes prior to the sudden reboot. Sometimes the system recovers after the reboot, but about half the time the KDE4 desktop comes up with the keyboard and mouse not working. The system log in that case shows that the USB subsystem is wedged, with the message "task khubd:38 blocked for more than 120 seconds", followed by a series of call traces. At that point, I can usually log in via SSH from another local machine and execute a shutdown/reboot, and the system usually recovers fully after that... until the next spontaneous reboot. The only thing unusual about my USB setup is that I have a Hauppauge HVR-1950 TV tuner plugged in, and the pvrusb2 driver installed on the system.
The mobo has an onboard ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphic controller, and I installed the proprietory ATI driver for it in the hopes of improving system stability. It didn't.
Due to the lack of syslog warnings before one of these reboot events, I was inclined to think the hardware was at fault, and my first thought was bad memory. However, fairly extensive testing with memtest86+ showed no errors. Of course, it could be other more obscure hardware problems, but it would be nice to be a little more certain before I resort to replacing the motherboard or the whole system.
Other info... booting in failsafe mode doesn't seem to cure the problem. Setting acpi=off in the boot menu doesn't seem to help either. There are some suspicious things in the boot log, though, such as:
My system does not have ECC memory, so it is indeed properly disabled in my BIOS. Again, I see discussions of this bug(?) on the net, but little indication of whether it is anything serious.
At this point, I'm running out of ideas... I'm still not sure whether the hardware or openSUSE 11.2 are at fault, and I don't want to give up on either prematurely.

If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?

I just installed pardus with kde4 and there's the ability to have "widgets" but i can't seem to scatter any files across the desktop. There're files in my /home/rabbit/Desktop folder but they don't show up on the desktop. I just want to know if this is just how kde4 is supposed to work?It seems odd if it is. I think the whole point of the desktop is to have commonly used files and programs just laying about

I'm using debian squeeze in my netbook and I'm not familiarized with KDE4 (4.4, the one in squeeze) and I wanted to know: how can I create desktop shortcuts?the desktop shortcuts, are they files stored in some place, or are they all part of the plasmoiddesktop activity"? if so, how can I create a generic desktop shortcut with it's own command and icon?BTW, how can I save the "desktop activity" i currently have, so if I accidentaly click delete desktop activity in the menu I can have all my icons and wallpaper back?

how to remove the '.desktop' suffix appended to my icons? I unintentionally installed the 64-bit S13.1 when I wanted the 32-bit version - anybody notice the misleading text around the hole on the DVD? The 'Slackware 13.1 (amd64)' side is the 32-bit and the 'Slackware 13.1 (1386)' side is actually the 64-bit version. It fooled me, anyway, and after finding out how limited software choice was I spat the dummy and went back to 32 :/ But...with Desktop Settings>Activity set to 'Folder View' I now have this unwanted suffix added to my icons. Also, if I'm in my home directory via Dolphin and I create new folders they also appear out on the desktop!

I'm running Squeeze with KDE 4.4.5 in my desktop. Everything seems to be fine, except for some unresponsiveness that is really annoying. The main problem (but this also reflects on other uses, though in a less intense manner) is when K3b is burning or erasing anything (including CD-R and CD-RW). The whole system becomes unusable. Not even a Konsole window can return from a "aptitude search something" query.
I have a Intel i7 920 system with 6GB RAM and two 1.5TB disks. I use an AMD Radeon 4890 video card with their proprietary drivers (at least for now it is the only option). I also have an extra Audigy sound card. I thought that such a system would be enough to have a good desktop experience while multitasking. What might be wrong?

When kubuntu is installed, there is a plasmoid desktop (a kind of transparent window that enables one to create and store links to applications). Nice and convenient.
Alas, the special desktop is easily hidden - permanently... Soon after the installation I inadvertently clicked the X on the plasmoid desktop pop up menu and that hid this special desktop.
In the file manager (Dolphin) I can still see the Desktop with all the links to applications, which are still active (I can run the applications by clicking their icons).
Surely there is a simple way to restore this plasmoid again to the view, but I just do not find how..
If you have kubuntu, you too can have "the fun" of hiding the plasmoid dekstop and then finding how to show it again. Just place you mouse pointer on the plasmoid desktop. That will pop up the menu with X, shift-spanner, turning and resize buttons. If you are brave, try to click X on the pop up menu. Bingo, the plasmoid disappears. Surely fingers more nimble than mine, would find out how to get it back... I can not.
how did you restore the plasmoid to the view.

my grandfather uses a linux machine for web browsing, emails etc. So he mostly uses Firefox, Thunderbird and sometimes also Skype and now he has also Jabber account. Currently there is Pclinuxos 2009 installed (the newest one with KDE 3.5). I used a frozen community repository, but this also brings the problem I cannot update the used programs as I am afraid it would attempt to replace the old KDE as well.
I know I can update Mozilla apps by downloading a static rpm and install with KPackage or Konsole and similar with LibreOffice. Not much friendly... I also discussed switching to other WM - but GNOME surely not, maybe Xfce (other ones have other issues).
Is it possible to somehow make KDE4 to behave like KDE3.5 in some ways? At least auto-mounting of flash drives etc.

A couple of days ago I set up an account with ZumoDrive to sync folders between my Fedora 14 desktop and my MS Vista laptop. I chose ZumoDrive instead of Dropbox or Ubuntu1 because it is 'integrated' with Yahoo which I use a lot.Everything works perfectly apart from one minor irritation. I cannot change the ZumoDrive folder icon on my KDE4 desktop. ZumoDrive is actually designed for use with Nautilus but it works fine with Dolphin, apart from the icon issue.
I can change the icon in Nautilus but when I try to do in in KDE/Dolphin I get:"Could not save properties. You do not have sufficient access to write to /home/david/ZumoDrive/.directory."I am the 'owner' of the drive and i have also tried as root but the result was the same.

I'm installing 11.4 KDE on an Acer D255 Netbook. (dual core Atom, 1Gb RAM)
The OS runs perfectly on this PC when booting from a thumb drive, but when I install to the HDD I can't get to a GUI desktop.
If I boot "normally" I just get to a CLI with a white background in the upper left 1/4 of a black screen. It appears that it's using init 5, just no desktop. (the installer added boot option vga=0x314, I tried booting both with and without that option, and I tried nomodeset too just for chuckles, no luck.)
If I boot to Failsafe Mode I can get to a GUI desktop (boots to init 3 then I go to init 5 and startx.)

This works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:
Code:
own_window_colour black
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_argb_130
own_window_type override
own_window yes
I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.

This has happened to me twice in a row while installing kubuntu 9.10 on the same machine:I get the OS installed and it prompts me to reboot the machine. I do so. On the first reboot, the KDE login screen never loads, and I just get a blank black screen.I then do a hard reset. From there, everything appears to work. I use the machine for awhile and all is well. For whatever reason, I end up rebooting, and when I log back in to KDE, not only do I not get my custom wallpaper, but I also don't get any desktop icons, a taskbar, etc.Right-clicks don't even work. The only thing that was loaded both times was the terminal that I had left open the last time.

Recently, updated to 11.04. Yesterday I booted the system and found that after I login my Desktop does not come up.. The mouse indicator just continues to spins. I have observed if I wait about 5 minutes my screen saver will kick in. My setting is for 5 minutes. Once I cancel the screen saver Iḿ back to the mouse indicator circling continuously. At that point all I am able to do is restart and try again. None of the keyboard shortcuts seem to work when that situation exist.I am running a Compaq Presario Dual boot2 GiB of RamAMD Athlon XP 2000+

I'm experiencing a wierd bug. Been having it for some time now. I haven't posted about it before since its only been annoying, but not really setting me back. And I have trouble defining and explaining the bug. Today it crossed the line into actual annoyance.
The bug occurs when I'm writing, using the keyboard on my laptop. Both when I write in browsers, like when writing this post, and when I write in openoffice. So its not limited to one program. In webbrowsers what happens is that all of a sudden the browser loads the previous page in the tab. Like I told it to go one step back. In OpenOffice something similar happens. The curser jumps up in the document.
I used to have this bug when touchpad-tapping was enabled. I have a habit of drumming my thumbs on the touchpad when typing. Therefore I've disabled tapping on the touchpad. The bug is reocurring, however I have not found a way to reproduce it. It might be a key combination I accidentally hit when typing away, but I'm not sure.

I recently restarted my computer after trying to install an update that was available for ubuntu (linux kernel image update i believe) which failed.
After restarting the computer, the ubuntu splash screen appeared as usual, and now my desktop is gone (see attached image).
I also got a gnome error message (attached) which i've never seen before, but i'm guessing it's related to my absent desktop.
How to restore my desktop?
