General :: KDE3.5 Versus KDE4 - Difference In Memory Requirements?

Does kde3.5 differ much in memory requirements from kde4? I'm running kde4 on an old thinkpad with 256mb ram and everything is a little slow...

General :: KDE4 - Mount Flash Disks Etc. On The Desktop Like In KDE3?

Jun 28, 2011

my grandfather uses a linux machine for web browsing, emails etc. So he mostly uses Firefox, Thunderbird and sometimes also Skype and now he has also Jabber account. Currently there is Pclinuxos 2009 installed (the newest one with KDE 3.5). I used a frozen community repository, but this also brings the problem I cannot update the used programs as I am afraid it would attempt to replace the old KDE as well.

I know I can update Mozilla apps by downloading a static rpm and install with KPackage or Konsole and similar with LibreOffice. Not much friendly... I also discussed switching to other WM - but GNOME surely not, maybe Xfce (other ones have other issues).

Is it possible to somehow make KDE4 to behave like KDE3.5 in some ways? At least auto-mounting of flash drives etc.

Software :: Kde4 Panel Autohide As In Kde3?

I've just started to test kde4 that comes with slackware64-current. I've always used kde3 just because I can let the autohided panel to appear when the mouse hits the opposite side of the desktop (I think it is a sane behaviour to avoid to accidentaly unhide it while I operate on toolbars and buttons near the location of the panel), so I looked for the same feature inside the new uselessly eye catching d.e. and I couldn't figure out how to get this basic, but powerful, feature.

Software :: KDE3 KPager Be Downloaded And Compiled In KDE4?

Feb 4, 2010

I have been using openSUSE 11.0 for some time now and love the feel of KDE3. Especially KPager, which shows me at a glance what is open on each desktop. This is really important when I am doing cad design with my Win-XP CAD, running in vmware in one desktop, interacting with my linux CAD in another desktop, gathering data from the www with Firefox in another dektop, while my emails and Skype are on the 5th desktop. So, on a 'spare' pc I decided to try openSUSE 11.2, KDE4 version.

To keep it short, I am extremely uncomfortable with KDE4. It may be fine for wizzie, pretty applications but I find it extremely cumbersome - dare I say it - like Windows 7 and worse still, there is no KPager functionality. Can the KDE3 KPager be downloaded from source and be compiled in KDE4? If not, how long will KDE3 be around before it is superseded by KDE4?

Software :: DCOP - Running KDE3 Applications In KDE4?

Nov 8, 2009

I am trying to run the KDE3 version of Basket in KDE4. The KDE4 version is very buggy. I am running Arch Linux with KDEmod. The problem it seems is that Basket tries to connect to the DCOP server but fails, and then crashes. Of course DCOP is only in KDE3 and not in KDE4. So how do I go about running Basket?

Here is the output from the terminal:

[Code].....

DCOP is installed with the KDE3 dependencies. How do I properly run an app that requires DCOP? Or is there another workaround?

OpenSUSE :: FreeNX On 11 Versus 11.1 - What's The Difference

Jan 13, 2011

I have a script that basically adds a zypper repo, then proceeds to install and configure FreeNX.To add the repo:

Code:

zypper addrepo Index of /repositories/X11:/RemoteDesktop/openSUSE_11.1 RemoteDesktop

To install FreeNX & it's relevant dependencies:

Code:

zypper install FreeNX

To setup and configure FreeNX:

Code:

nxsetup --install --setup-nomachine-key --clean --purge
sed -i 's/AllowUsers idcuser/AllowUsers idcuser nx/' /etc/ssh/sshd_config
service sshd reload

[code]....

After completing these steps on version 11, I can immediately open the FreeNX client (windows 7), and connect. On 11.1, at the very end of the FreeNX connect, just after "Dowloading the session information", I get:

Code:

NX> 105 startsession --link="lan" --backingstore="1" --encryption="1" --cache="16M" --images="64M" --shmem="1" --shpix="1" --strict="0" --composite="1" --media="0" --session="170.224.164.19" --type="unix-gnome" --geometry="1274x956" --client="winnt" --keyboard="pc102/en_US" --screeninfo="1274x956x16+render"

Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive).NX> 280 Exiting on signal: 15 I've googled this to death, and tried a bunch of random changes to both ssh and nxserver, but I can't seem to get rid of it. What might have changed from 11 to 11.1 that could cause this behavior change? The NXserver seems to be configured and running identical on both systems.

Software :: Difference Between Source Versus SRC - RPM

Mar 11, 2010

It is my understanding that building from source is slightly faster since the created binary will be specific to the current kernel/system. This seems to have the drawback of when the kernel is upgraded the source compiled package will no longer work...but this is not always the case. So what kernel upgrades will cause a package from source not to function? Side bar to that, I have a package that is only available in source format that I need to install on numerous hosts. It seems that the upfront work of creating my own RPM for this package is worth it to make managing the package more efficient, and I think I have two choices: src-rpm and standard binary rpm. If I build a src-rpm and I distribute that for installation will a kernel upgrade 'break' the package since it is actually being compiled for a specific kernel at the time of install? So far I have found a lot of information, and have spent time reading the rpm docs, etc, but I don't feel like I have a good grasp of what the specific portability differences are between source, src-rpm, and rpm.

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu Versus: KDE The Only Difference?

Jul 3, 2009

I recently made an Ubuntu liveCD for a family member, and tested it myself first. It impressed me, so I might possibly be interested in switching distros; but I'm not very familiar with Gnome(GNOME?), so I might try Kubuntu instead. Am I correct in understanding that the only difference is Kubuntu uses KDE (hence the K)? If there are other differences, does Kubuntu share the limited user control that I've heard Ubuntu has, such as locking the root account by default?

Hardware :: Performance Difference - Dual Versus 3 Channel RAM

I'm planning to build a new box testing server consolidation on virtualizaion running Xen/Vserver/OpenVZ as software. All servers running 64bit Linux OS. My new planning is to get 2 sets DDR-3 1333/1600 4Gx2 kit. I may consider 3 channel kit dropping the total RAM capacity to 6G if it has better performance. Besides can mobo support dual channel RAM also allowing 3 channel RAM to work on it without sacrifying performance?

General :: HA / LB Clustering With Specific Software Requirements?

Jun 16, 2010

I am looking to build up a HA/LB linux cluster with specific software requirements. For hardware, I have a number of dual xeon PE 2650s and would like to use them as efficiently as possible. These are 32bit systems, I anticipate scaling up to 64bit systems when I have a tested, working solution in place. For distro, I am familiar with CentOs, Gentoo and Ubuntu but unsure as to which would be the best foundation, although leaning towards CentOs. For software, I need to realise all the services provided by xampp (Apache, MySql, PHP, Perl, FTP), plus Red5 flash media server.

My current train of thought is;
6 physical servers; 2 Directors/Heartbeat, 2 Apache, 2 Red5
Gigabit private network for connecting the nodes.
CentOs 5.5 on all nodes.
DRDB across the 2 Apache nodes for Apache, MySql, PHP.
DRDB across the 2 Red5 nodes for Red5.

General :: Minimum And Typical Requirements For All / Many Operating Systems?

Mar 2, 2011

I wanted to test my first and relatively small SSD hard drive (32 GB) and started wondering how much disk space do I need for Windows XP SP3 and Fedora 13 installation. I started searching for information and created my own page listing loosely system requirements, because it seems to be difficult to find minimum and especially typical installation disk space consumption.

Has anyone made a single page listing minimum, typical and recommended system requirements, so you can easily use that single page for comparing operating system requirements especially how much hard disk space is needed?

General :: Bash Versus Pinyin ?

Aug 23, 2010

I am trying my hand at Bash scripting. I have a file with lots of pinyin, which is the romanized version of Chinese characters and words. A typical entry looks like this,

"7 shuo1 to speak"

Seven is the number of the entry shuo is the pinyin, 1 is the tone mark and is the Chinese character.

What I would like to do is change the format so that it looks more like this:

7 shuo 1

Each field needs to be re-assigned to a variable in an array and then printed to the screen and saved to a file in the same order it was input. This is to prepare the data for another project I am working on in imagemagick.

I have spent all day looking at linux man pages and have very little to show for my efforts. What is the best way to approach this? grep, awk, sed...?

General :: Sudo Versus SU - SAX2 Command?

Jun 3, 2010

I've been using SuSE for a while and something has been bugging me. Not a show stopper, but nevertheless, an interesting one. Most tutorials, forum posts, etc. recommend using a sudo command to accomplish stuff. For example:

Code:
sudo make install
sudo vi file

However, this does not always work. For instance, I was recently working on a resolution problem with my ViewSonic VX922 - it would only display at 1024x768 rather than the native 1280x1024. Viewing some posts, I found the command "sudo sax2 -r". What I discovered is that there seems to be a big difference between sudo and su

Code:
drkhelmt@SPACEBALL1:">sudo sax2
root's password:
sudo: sax2: command not found
drkhelmt@SPACEBALL1:">su
Password:
SPACEBALL1:/home/drkhelmt: #sax2
SaX: Checking update status for intel driver
SaX: initialization already done
SaX: cal [ sax2 -r ] if your system has been changed !
SaX: startup
SaX: X server:0.0-> grant
SaX: importing current configuration
SPACEBALL1:/home/drkhelmt: #

So the question, why does the command sax2 (and others) work when after the su command rather than a sudo?
