After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 my USB flash disks no longer work properly. Some of them I cannot see at all. Others like my Kingston show up as Kingston & USB0 at the same time. I can see the files, but I cannot copy any files to the flash disk.
When I try to unmount I get a popup window saying:
If I try to eject or safely remove the disk by clicking on the Kingston icon, I get the following:
The only usb device that seems to work properly is my USB wireless dongle. My Samsung 1TB external drive works, but it appears as Samsung and USB1. If I click on Samsung, I cannot see anything. When I click on USB1, I see the files. This is a very annoying problem as I use my flash disks extensively.
I have no hard drives in my computer, so I have been trying to boot Ubuntu 11.04 from an 8GB usb flash drive. Is this possible? So far the best result i have gotten is it will sit on the loading screen for a while then dump. I was only able to get the last little bit which reads mount. mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory. mounting /sys on /root/sys filed: no such file or directory. mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or dirctory. target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed a minimal system with openbox window decorator. (without any window manager) when i insert a flash disk to my computer, system doesn't mount it automaticly. i must mount it to a folder to use it.

Is there a possibility to use a flash drive as a speed up for conventional hard disks? I got the idea to redirect all read ops to the flash drive if the data is already stored there, and to read from the conventional disks if the data is not found there (and during idle time the freshly accessed data from the conventional disk is stored on the flash disk).
Is this already possible with linux standard tools?
my grandfather uses a linux machine for web browsing, emails etc. So he mostly uses Firefox, Thunderbird and sometimes also Skype and now he has also Jabber account. Currently there is Pclinuxos 2009 installed (the newest one with KDE 3.5). I used a frozen community repository, but this also brings the problem I cannot update the used programs as I am afraid it would attempt to replace the old KDE as well.
I know I can update Mozilla apps by downloading a static rpm and install with KPackage or Konsole and similar with LibreOffice. Not much friendly... I also discussed switching to other WM - but GNOME surely not, maybe Xfce (other ones have other issues).
Is it possible to somehow make KDE4 to behave like KDE3.5 in some ways? At least auto-mounting of flash drives etc.
Through some recent update, which one I am not sure, my system no longer responds to removable media such as flash drives and insertions of DVD/CD disks. Whereas before, for instance, if I inserted a USB flash drive, the "Device Notifier" would pop up, tell me that a new device had been detected, and ask me what I wanted to do with it, now nothing. "My Computer" (sysinfo:/)does not update either. The kernel knows the device is there, since I can see it when I do "lsusb". OpenSuSE x86_64 11.2.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have/had a PC with several hard drives, and a mix of ubuntu and windows on multi boot. The old boot drive died screaming, and I need to start again. (But my data is safe! yay!)
Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?
I have servers which contain SATA disks and SAS disks. I was testing the speed of writing on these servers and I recognized that SAS 10.000 disks much more slowly than the SATA 7200. What do you think about this slowness? What are the reasons of this slowness?
I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);
dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile.txt bs=1024 count=1000000 when this comment was run in SAS disk server, I took this output(10.000 rpm)
(a new server,2 CPU 8 core and 8 gb ram)
1000000+0 records in
1000000+0 records out
1024000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 12.9662 s, 79.0 MB/s (I have not used this server yet) (hw raid1)

I installed a few updates, as well as Ubuntu Stuido from the synaptic package manager, and when I rebooted, I can't hear any sound from flash content displayed in Fire Fox. All other sounds work fine, and I made another user account as a test, and that account has full audio functionality, including flash...

I installed Boxee on my 64bit install. I had to edit the DEB so it did not install Flash, because Ubuntu still insists on installing the 32bit version which always borks Firefox.
But now I cant run synaptic without getting complaints of broken packages. I just want to blacklist boxee from from annoying the hell out of me, but keep it installed. How do I go about doing that?
I'm trying to load the flash stuff in webpages, but it says i need the flash plugin.
I download the YUM rpm installer, and use yum localinstall to do it.
Terminal say: /home/wade/Download/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm: does not update installed package.
I have already tried installing it, and it says it worked fine, but I'm still unable to view flash.
Did anybody tried installing the latest adobe flash named Square for amd64 systems? I was interested in knowing whether there is any improvement in the performance. I also want to know how to replace my existing 32 bit wrapper based flash on 64 bit browser and install this 64 bit flash.
View 5 Replies View RelatedYou may know that there was a security release for Adobe Flash Plugin for Linux x86 but not for x86_64. There has been a development:
See : http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
It works fine here. I have a Multilib Slack 13.1 stable.
i've suddenly got problems with flash - it was working fine until a cuple of days ago.i have flash 10.1.82. 76 ubuntu0.10.04.2 on ubuntu 10.04, but videos and other flash sites tell me i need to upgrade to the latest flash version 10.i've tried flash-aid, which seems to run ok but i still have the problem.at the same time, i can suddenly only run firefox tools > add-ons in safe mode - if i choose tools > addons in normal mode, fx locks up completely, and finally gives me the option to force quit. i've tried re-enabling add-ons one at a time, but no problem until i come out of safe mode.i'm wondering if this is a firefox problem rather than ubuntu or flash. my firefox is 3.6.8

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm browsing on my phone which is not letting me scroll to the end of this text box so I will say thank you in advance for any replies now. After my computer was switched off abruptly after a power outage I have many errors upon booting. My hard drive setup consists of a RAID0 array of two 500GB sata disks. The partition table (from my head!) goes like this:50GB NTFS Windows XP /c/50GB ext4 Ubuntu 9.10 /4GB swapThe rest is a large NTFS partition all the way up to the end of the array at 987GB. Mounted at /media/share/I am thinking I will have to start again (I won't lose much, I have recent backups), but what is the best way of restoring the system as much as I can? Currently my computer has been booted into Ubuntu for over an hour, and after pressing ctrl+alt+shift+F2 I can see that it is finding errors still, now at sector 6008. Should I let this run its course or REISUB it and boot onto a live CD. I think the main problem is with an NTFS partition
View 1 Replies View RelatedEver since my upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4, every time I reboot the system it does a full disk check. /var/log/boot.log tells me that fsck thinks that the file systems contain errors or that it wasn't cleanly unmounted. And yet, it doesn't seem to actually find errors, and a clean reboot starts another check (again with it thinking something is dirty). I dual-boot with Windows, and reboot from there with the same problem.Again, all of this is new with 10.4 and was not happening with 9.10.Is there a way to find out when/how/why the disks are not being unmounted cleanly?

The HDD is brand new and hasn't been formated, partitioned, or previously had any other OS on it. The HDD is recognized in the BIOS.A list of possible drivers are listed in which don't match, except for two, but they don't lead to anywhere beneficial in order to complete the installation process. At this point, I have no idea how I must proceed.
