I just installed pardus with kde4 and there's the ability to have "widgets" but i can't seem to scatter any files across the desktop. There're files in my /home/rabbit/Desktop folder but they don't show up on the desktop. I just want to know if this is just how kde4 is supposed to work?It seems odd if it is. I think the whole point of the desktop is to have commonly used files and programs just laying about
If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?
I'm using debian squeeze in my netbook and I'm not familiarized with KDE4 (4.4, the one in squeeze) and I wanted to know: how can I create desktop shortcuts?the desktop shortcuts, are they files stored in some place, or are they all part of the plasmoiddesktop activity"? if so, how can I create a generic desktop shortcut with it's own command and icon?BTW, how can I save the "desktop activity" i currently have, so if I accidentaly click delete desktop activity in the menu I can have all my icons and wallpaper back?
i've 6 desktops, with a lot of icons organiced over themnyone in the place i like.Sometimes (once a mont or so) when i boot mi computer, all the icons on all the desktops apears reorganiced: All on the left side of the screen and all equally spaced. I don't want it to happen anymore because each time it happens i lose half an hour reorganicing them.I've tried to mark in the desktop the option "icons fixed", and I've tried to update KDE to the repo KDE instead of the one in the OSS repo, but nothing works, lately instead of disorganicing the icons once a week it happens each 3 to 7 days.
how to remove the '.desktop' suffix appended to my icons? I unintentionally installed the 64-bit S13.1 when I wanted the 32-bit version - anybody notice the misleading text around the hole on the DVD? The 'Slackware 13.1 (amd64)' side is the 32-bit and the 'Slackware 13.1 (1386)' side is actually the 64-bit version. It fooled me, anyway, and after finding out how limited software choice was I spat the dummy and went back to 32 :/ But...with Desktop Settings>Activity set to 'Folder View' I now have this unwanted suffix added to my icons. Also, if I'm in my home directory via Dolphin and I create new folders they also appear out on the desktop!
Just installed xsnow on my sisters Ubuntu pc and it runs ok, however it seems not to work properly with the desktop icons. When a snowflake falls over the icon it kind of cuts a jagged line through it. The icon is then restored when you hover over it.
my grandfather uses a linux machine for web browsing, emails etc. So he mostly uses Firefox, Thunderbird and sometimes also Skype and now he has also Jabber account. Currently there is Pclinuxos 2009 installed (the newest one with KDE 3.5). I used a frozen community repository, but this also brings the problem I cannot update the used programs as I am afraid it would attempt to replace the old KDE as well.
I know I can update Mozilla apps by downloading a static rpm and install with KPackage or Konsole and similar with LibreOffice. Not much friendly... I also discussed switching to other WM - but GNOME surely not, maybe Xfce (other ones have other issues).
Is it possible to somehow make KDE4 to behave like KDE3.5 in some ways? At least auto-mounting of flash drives etc.
I'm running Suse 11.3 with KDE4.I have an icon in my Kickoff Application Launcher for xterm. WhenI click on the icon, it apparently executes the command /usr/bin/xterm which generates a large window with a large font.I would like to get a smaller window with a smaller font. I knowhow to do that on a command line but to execute the commandI need to _already_ have a window open so I can run the command. So how do I (a) add a new icon to the KDE launcher which generates the command I want or (b) change the existing iconso that it executes MY command and not the basic /usr/bin/xterm?
so i am in the stages of experiementing and right now, on Linux Mint KDE, there doesnt seem to be a way to arrange my desktop icons in the way i want the icons always want to be aligned/sorted on there own even if i click lock off and snap to grid off as well ive tried folder view, default desktop and newspaper but it hasnt worked so far is there a way to be able to arrange my icons anyway i want?
The desktop and icons on my Fedore Core 4 Server is not displayed all of a sudden.I have browsed toapps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktopand had enabled the show_desktop item
Turned on my computer this morning only to have my desktop come up as if I was looking in a mirror. The icons and taskbar etc are in the correct places, only everything is a mirror image. This is a per user problem as my wife's account is fine. I have tried deleting all of the plasma files in the ./config directory with no luck. KDE 4.5 on openSUSE 11.3NVidia graphics if that matters
migrating from windows to Gnu/Linux: familiar with Right-click >> Arrange-icons-automatically, while under my KDE & XFCE this feature is something I wanted.
This code is not mine: I only copied this from where I found, from the ubuntuforums authored by a member logged as user PGScooter, you may read him/her directly from here.
Procedure:
Copy the following code:
Code: #make sure you change 'user' on line 4 to the username of the desktop you want to organize use strict; use warnings; my $conffile='/home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0.rc'; open(CONF,"$conffile") or die "can't find the config file";
[Code]....
{if you run Kde you may replace that xfce4 to kde whatever is found in your current directory.
Log out. Log in as that user again. The icons are arranged this time. It worked for me automatically. I am running Xfce4 over a Slackware 12.2.
I am using Red Hat EL 4. I am facing a bizzare issue. Just like that I rebooted my PC. When it booted up, I am not able to see my icons in desktop and also right click does not work.
For some reason my desktop icons have decided to be very small and can't be changed (systemsettings/appearances/icons/advanced) It happened after I enabled and downloaded the files need for compiz. I have disabled compiz and now have no 3D desktop effects, but still cannot alter the desktop icon size. What have I done?
i have ubuntu 10.4i have the following problem:the desktop icons disappearsand the menu when i use the mous right click tooalso, when i try to open any folder i get the following message:Quote:Could not open location 'file:///home/username'Failed to execute child process "kfmclient" (No such file or directory)
I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
EVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.
I installed kubuntu few days back. By clicking blindly I lost my desktop - I mean it is working fine but there are no icons on the desktop and there is no task bar with list of programs.
How can I reset to the initial stage when i first installed?
I Just Installed Opensuse 11.3 on Dell INSPIRON N5010 laptop in dual boot with windows 7 installed. The laptop boot up(OpenSuse GUI is seen during boot) to run level 5 with only two errors;1. Failed service in runlevel 5 nscd2. Skipped services in runlevel 5 cif nfs.there after it give me a login in in like command line(no GUI mode loaded but on the background I see the OpenSuse Icons like the desktop was loaded), I can login in a that command line and get the laptop receive IP and do other service like ssh/telnet and other command line functionality but I don't have the KDE4 Desktop to allow me launch applications in GUI mode
when I turned on my desktop workstation, I found that Desktop icons have disappeared and I can't right-clik the Desktop , aning found any option on desktop like Application,Places and system
Maybe it's to simple question but I don't know what to do.I have openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1.3. When I set desktop settings to display content of Desktop folder I can't drag files. They're fixed to their positions! I've tried different settings of folder view parameters but nothing helped.
I just updated to SUSE 11.3 and got the latest version of KDE 4.I'm not thrilled with the default theme (the taskbar running applications are really fuzzy) and would like to install a new one, but there isn't anyplace in the settings menu to change it. Did I miss something? How do I change the theme?
How do I add/edit a desktop icon on kde4.6? I earlier versions, we could click on the gear wheel to change or add an icon. I have a few apps that do not show an icon (even though the icon is in kickoff menu - one is pingus)
I want to take a snapshot of a web page (at regular intervals) and use it as background for the desktop. What about kwebdesktop? Is it still maintained?
I'm running Squeeze with KDE 4.4.5 in my desktop. Everything seems to be fine, except for some unresponsiveness that is really annoying. The main problem (but this also reflects on other uses, though in a less intense manner) is when K3b is burning or erasing anything (including CD-R and CD-RW). The whole system becomes unusable. Not even a Konsole window can return from a "aptitude search something" query.
I have a Intel i7 920 system with 6GB RAM and two 1.5TB disks. I use an AMD Radeon 4890 video card with their proprietary drivers (at least for now it is the only option). I also have an extra Audigy sound card. I thought that such a system would be enough to have a good desktop experience while multitasking. What might be wrong?
