Applications :: OMAP L-138 - Creating A USB Application Working In Windows

Apr 13, 2010

I am using OMAP-L138 chip which has ARM 9 core and runs linux. The device which I am making stores some data. I have to retirve that data using USB interface. For this, I have to make an application which communicates with the device drivers provided by the ARM linux(which comes with the OMAP L-138 *) so that we can transfer the data stored in the device to a computer.

My question: Suppose I make such an application which makes the host Linux computer detect my device connected at its USB port and then transfer the stored data to the computer. Will windows computers be able to detect my device? What should I do so that my device can transfer data to both Linux and Windows pc?

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic Koala - Slow Jerky And Has Odd Freezes Like Windows - Applications Randomly Stop Working

Nov 7, 2010

I had been happily on Jaunty Jackalope until they stopped supporting it so I took the forced upgrade and it's HORRIBLE!

I feel like I'm back in Windows land. Within an hour of my first load I had my very first Ubuntu total-lockup. Just like Windows. In the 18 months I'd been using Jackalope I had not had a single crash. Not one.

It's slow, jerky, and has odd freezes. Just like Windows. Applications randomly stop working and die. Just like Windows.

Is there any way to fall back to Jackalope or is there any hope of them fixing Koala? 'Cause this is wretched.

I see there's another version out there...10.04.01.LTS. I'll try that. It can't be much worse.

Oct 4, 2010

Im creating a PHP application for my company. The application its going to be used by around 500 people in the network. I've always used Windows Server for my PHP applications, but I want to start using linux. I've heard its faster and more secure.

I want to knwo, what type of computer should I use? Is does linux work better on Intel Xeon or AMD? I need the application to work fast.

Am I going to have any problems with incompatibility if I get a Dell server?

I've used Ubuntu, just to check it out, but I've heard Centos is better for web servers, is that true?

Debian :: Creating Terminal Launched Applications (Shortcuts)

Jun 16, 2011

Just got a problem that I've spent a few days trying to get around. Basically, what I am trying to do is create launchers/shortcuts on my desktop that will
a) Launch a terminal with root or sudo access
b) Launch an application.
For example, an application I might ordinarily use as a super user or root user is 'hping3.'

Basically, I want to be able to click on the launcher, and have it open up a terminal with sudo access and launch the hping3 application. I've tried messing around with the 'create launcher' function, and entering in a command to be launched in a terminal window, but to no avail (e.g. something like "sudo hping3" or "su && hping3"). How to write up a simple script to launch a terminal with su access and launch a given application?

Fedora :: Creating Launching Links For Gnome3 Activities And Applications?

Jun 6, 2011

how to quickly create Launcher Links that will edit the Applications or Activities panels in Gnome3. I installed Tweak Tool, but it only adds to the desktop which seems a little tacky. I read where you can edit the desktop file to create new ones, but I want to add Application Links to the Application Panel, and then possibly drop and drag to the Activities Sidebar.

I might be overlooking something in Tweak Tool, so will play with that some more, I don't mind editing a file to include, but would rather use GUI.

Software :: Creating A Graphical Sudo Application For The Lesser Window Managers?

Oct 31, 2010

I dislike dependency ridden applications or applications that do something useful designed for a specific window manager. So I am starting a thread specifically for requests for applications in Gnome and KDE that aren't immediately available in XFCE, Fluxbox,Blackbox, IceWM, LXDE etc. For instance, I am personally creating a graphical sudo application for the lesser window managers. What other applications would you like to see? this is NOT a request for applications for Linux is general, ONLY ones already available in Linux.

Fedora :: Put New Application Under Applications->Programming Menu

Feb 4, 2011

I just installed GNAT GPS and would like it to display under Applications->Programming drop down menu. How does one do this? I have read about creating a .desktop file but tried that and it still does not appear under the menu I like. It does appear on the desktop but not because of the .desktop file.

OS: fedora 14 63-bit
CPU: CPU AMD-64

An example file (if needed) would be nice.

Also, just as a extra, has anyone found the GNAT GPS icon (.png) file?

Ubuntu :: Link To Application Cannot Find Applications In Home Folder

Jan 27, 2010

I seem to be seeing some weird behavior in kubuntu with KDE 4.3.2 and KDE 4.3.5 for Kubuntu 9.10 32-bit.I have a few programs in my home folder. For instance Eclipse and Mendeley. it seems that when i create a Link to Application does not launch them. Here is how I create the links.

-> I right click and create a new "Link to Application"
-> I click on the Application tab and browse to where the shell script, or executable is.

and when I try to launch them it does not work. The link is using the absolute path. I tried setting the working directory and using a relative path but nothing. If I run the link in a terminal it says "Warning: Could not find" and the application I set. Now this seems to not be a problem for system applications like Kate. If i change the link to launch Kate it works perfectly.

General :: Dd Command Not Working While Creating Live USB

Feb 5, 2011

I want to create a Live USB ..I have the ISO image in the hard disk

Where Sdb is my USB

The copy operation is okay...It says no of records in / out and gives the statistics

But when I boot the system , getting the error:

Boot :

In some cases , the USB itself is not recognized by BIOS at boot..

My BIOS supports boot from USB ..I have Boot order 1. CD/DVD 2. USB 3. HDD

Also what is the filesystem to be adopted for dd?

I usually format using FAT or FAT 32

1.mkfs.vfat /dev/sdb -I (or)
2.mkdosfs /dev/sdb (or)
3.mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdb

What is the correct way of partitioning USB drive? - FAT or FAT 32....Most Live USB creators (unetbootin/LiLi Live/Usb Creator) recognize only FAT32...

I dont want a Linux filesystem (ext2,ext3 or 4or reiserfs)for my USB as it is not portable across many systems as MS OSes do not read them..Also I had little success in booting a USB when I partitioned it using ext2..I read somewhere that ext2 will not reduce the life of the USB drive compared to other fs.

Ubuntu :: Creating A Document For Windows?

Apr 7, 2010

I need to print some documents I created in OO (.odt), but our printers are not Linux compatible, which means I somehow need to transfer the files to a Windows computer. I can't use the .odt files because MW can't open them (I can't install OpenOffice on the machines), and saving in either .doc or .docx does not work either because it totally messes up the document. So I tried print to file and created several pdfs, but again Adobe Reader on Windows can not open them. I am sort of running out of ideas, and the other thing is I am not really sure if the files I created are pdfs at all. When you open them in gedit they all start with
%!PS-Adobe-3.0 which to me looks more like a post script file.

Ubuntu :: Creating The Partition For Windows?

Oct 4, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 for awhile now, and I wish to create a partition for Windows 7 so that I can dual-boot. I know you all are cursing me right now, but I have no choice. I run too much high-end software for business purposes that I need to.

I have dual-booted before, but that was when I had windows xp on a primary partition, and I seem to recall that was necessary. I dual-booted ubuntu afterwards as a trial basis, and then I completely switched to Ubuntu 100% for the last couple years. Unfortunately I need to go back. Is it possible to create a file partition for windows as a secondary partition without wiping all my data?
