General :: Installing On An Existing Windows RAID0

I administer a small network of computers connected to a windows 2003 server. The machines Dual boot Windows XP and CentOS 5.
My question is this. The machines are being upgraded to HP Z800 workstations. These workstations come with 2 1TB drives setup on a hardware RAID0. Can I install Linux on these machines, using the RAID0? Can I do an install as if it was just one hard drive? The machines came with Windows7 and I'd like to keep it intact including the RAID0. Can I do the install where it resizes the partition, adding the linux partition to the "drive".
If I can't use the existing windows RAID0 to install CentOS I was thinking of just installing another hard drive in the machines for it. This brings up another question, what would happen if I moved my Linux drive from one of the old workstations and put it in the new workstation, would it boot? I know windows wont boot like this because of the hdd controller drivers and I have a sneaky work around for this anyway but am not wanting to transfer the windows installation.

I am currently running Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 on a single 750GB drive. My question is whether or not I can add two more drives (say 2 500GB drives) in a raid 0 array leaving the OS and data on the original drive? I find my self working with some very large files and I would like to speed up their processing time. At the same time, I would like to leave my current configuration in place without touching the OS or my data. I'm not much of a hardware guy.

What just happened was that I was experiencing some serious blue screen errors in Windows all of a sudden, so I loaded up my recovery partition for windows, and ran the "Restore complete system function". At some point, it had to restart, and I got the BIOS error "Unable to detect operating system". Eventually I got openSUSE to work again by reinstalling it using my DVD. However, now, whenever I load my windows partition, I get a windows error that says it cannot configure Windows on my hardware! The furthest it gets is a blue Windows screen that says "Please wait while Windows continues to configure your hardware."
My windows version is Vista, and I use openSUSE 11.3 as my primary partition. My question is this: How can I re-install Windows onto my partition? I have a recovery partition setup still, but I'm afraid that the Restore Complete System function will mess with my linux partitions again!
All I want Windows for is to play WoW! Running WoW through Wine is fail on my laptop for some reason, its far too slow and problematic. Please help me... some Linux forums just trashed me for using Windows at all, but its my only option available for my particular spec of computer to play this game, so that type of advice doesn't help me much. Feasible alternatives to a Windows partition would be nice, but Wine clearly doesn't work for me like I desire.

Im trying to set up two raptors (identical) with RAID-0 using Silicon Image.
The drives arent being detected by linux. I have the linux drivers on USB but unsure on where to install them. There is no option available...
The drives are being detected on computer start up..and were working with windows...
Havent tried a diff distro as can get my hands on one.
Motherboard is a A8N-Sli Deluxe.

Started using Fedora 13 from a liveUSB w/ persistent overlay. My netgear wg511 wireless card is not recognized, so I want to install ndiswrapper. Any tips for doing this, given my situation (liveUSB, no wired connection)? Or is there a work-around that doesn't involve ndiswrapper?

I had windows and ubuntu for some time, the other day I had an issue with (msconfig). The easiest way to fix it is to fresh install windows. So I wanted to boot into ubuntu, take my windows files and toss them onto a external drive. So this is were I need help. I have 3 hard drives, 2 internal and 1 external. The 2 internal drives are 2 500 gig WD's in raid0. I can not find out how to retrieve my data from these drives at all. I can get the partition manager to tell me I have them, but I can not find them anywhere let alone get data off. And I have my work for my 10 page research paper on there and I should be working on it but have not been able to retrieve the work and put it on my laptop.

Right so my situation is a little obscure and from all the posts I've read through I can't find one that suits me well enough.My PC's hard drive recently went on the fritz so I backed up all my data, got a brand new Terrabyte hard drive and then put all my stuff on there. I also plugged in the fault drive as a secondary and ahev cleared most of the stuff off it. It's separated into two partitions; E: and F: but together make about 600 gigs. I then have two external Terrabyte hard drives, it's a long story but their connected via USB.
Now I really like the idea fo getting to grips with Linux. I don't want to use a LIVE CD, I've done that already and I want to see how I get along using it as a proper OS. I also really need to keep the Windows Vista for several reasons, most importantly for iTunes which I use to keep my iPhone and iPad up to date and I've heard iTunes and linux don't get along too well, even with programs like WINE. So obviously I'm looking to dual boot and keep all my data but what would be the best way to go about it? Stick it on my primary drive? Or on my slightly faulty drive? Or on one of my two externals? On the bright side, because I'm on a fairly new hard drive, my Vista runs really smoothly, and so I shouldn't encounter too many bugs that windows is renowned for a long the way...
I'd also like to be able to access all my data from both OSs so I don't have to keep jumping from one OS to another. Is that possible? or simple to accomplish?I have a pretty good Nvidia graphics card too, so I'd appreciate it if someone could explain how I get XGl working on Fedora once it's all set up.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 using Wibu inside Windows and installation looks good without any problems but when I select Ubuntu in Boot POST menu after I see Ubuntu Desktop I see error it's saying that Root directory is not specified and there is OK button and if I press it I see same message. only way to get out is to click restart in top right corner. My Windows installation is on RAID0 SSDs and I actually tried to install it on same partition as windows and even tried to install on NEW unallocated and freshly formatted partition. Nothing works. I am thinking to install it from Live CD however in advance formatting on let's say 20gb of space what do i assign ? Like how do I partition it like root directory and swap and other partition i ll need. Like can you specify all I think 3 different partitions I'll need and how much space to allocate for each on let's say 20GB of space.
I remember I had a choice "Use all free space" and it was soo simple I could have windows and some unallocated space on hard drive and Ubuntu would of use it . Now I don't see this option. I see use entire disk ...or advanced where You have to create on unallocated space all parts of partitions needed that's

I'm running 10.10 but also had this problem on 10.4. Every time I start a new window (e.g. from the Applications menu), it opens below all of the existing windows. Obviously I would like it to open on top, and be in focus.I have Visual Effects set to NONE (so that VNC works correctly). If I set Visual Effects to NORMAL or EXTRA, I do not have this problem (that is, the window opens on top).I'm using an up-to-date, stock, 32-bit, Ubuntu 10.10 system with Gnome windows manager. I sudo apt-get uninstalled a bunch of stuff I shouldn't have. Now my Ubuntu Partition doesn't boot up correctly, something about the graphic system, video system, etc. all being unconfigured. (I'll get the exact error later.) All I can use is the command line.can I install Ubuntu over my old Ubuntu partition without messing up rebooting/GRUB and all that?

What I am trying to accomplish, is have 3 partitions on my hard drive. The first one being Windows 35GB. The second being 15GB Ubuntu. The remaining just being backups. I have set up partitions for this, but I have failed thus far in finding a way to install to the Ubuntu partition I have created. Should I have left that space unallocated? How would I make this work?

I have fedora 12 currently installed on my laptop, but would like to install another version along side it. How do I do this? Will it detect the second version automatically and add a grub entry? Or do I need to do something else. Also, what partitions need formatting, do any new one except '/' need creating?

I'm having some (well, a lot actually) of problems trying to get OpenSUSE 11.2 installed on my home PC. I am attempting to set up a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 installed on an bios Nvidia RAID 0.I was able to shrink the partition in Windows, and rebooted onto the net install for OpenSUSE (the MD5 validated DVD install failed multiple burns with "Repository not found"). I get into the graphical installer portion with no problems off the net install CD. However, the installer is not recognizing that there is an existing RAID 0. It lists the 2 SATA disks in the RAID separately. I can click on SDA1, and both SDB and SDB1 and it shows the disks, but does not recognize any existing partitions. If I click on SDA I get an immediate segfault in YaST and drop back to the text mode installer menu. It is loading the nv_sata module just fine.
From forum searches and google it seems that this is not usually a problem. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 with the Nvidia Nforce 570 chipset running an AMD X2 64 3800+. Removing the stripeset and redoing it as Linux software RAID is not an option, I do not have enough space for a total backup/restore. Anything I do has to be nondestructive to the existing Windows installation.I really want to have a linux installation but between the DVD installer failing and now this issue I am about ready to give up on it.

I installed on LUKS+LVM, and I want to preserve my /home without moving the data to any external media (I don't have any). My partition layout is as follows:
sda1: /boot
sda2: encrypted volume (sda2_crypt)
sda2_crypt: LVM volume group, with /, swap and /home.
Having many previous (sad) experiences with completely borked experiments and data loss, I've decided to try the trick in VirtualBox first. I've installed Debian (testing, netinst, Dec 2009) with encrypted LVM, and touch'd a file in my $HOME so that I'd know if the contents were preserved. Then proceeded to install Ubuntu 10.04.1 from the alternative CD. After the installer started and loaded some of the basic components (but before it entered the partitioner) I've switched to a shell and read a scroll of identification:

$ lvm vgscan

My Laptop is Dell Inspiron 1525 with Dual boot Windows vista as well as Linux mint. I was trying to install Ubuntu over Linux Mint, but it is not detecting the existing partitions asking me to go ahead and edit the partitions manually (which I am not familiar with). Earlier when I was installing Linux Mint or SUSE, it was detecting the existing partitions and could install easily. Currently I am sure how to go about, but I would like to install Ubuntu badly.

After lots of trouble with the new Nvidia stuff in Fedora 12 I gave up and am trying to switch to an ATI Radeon 4350 card in the existing system.I have removed the Nvidia refs with rpm -e, deleted /etc/X11/xorg*, and installed the card. I am only able to get a maximum resolution of 1024x768. Here's what I've done:
Boot and su/delete all refs: /etc/X11/xorg*
Reboot. System comes up with 1024x768
Select Administration->Display to run system-config-display.
Su/password dialogue

If I try to add a mode line following Depth 24, It is ignored by system-config-display and overwritten. This worked with the Nvidia installation and I was able to select my resolution above 1024x768.

I couldn't post in General. It said I had insufficient permissions to post there, so, this post does have to do with Windows slightly. Sorry that it's here, but I DID read the rules (I searched, and couldn't find an answer to my problem either)
Anyways, I have a RAID5 array 2.72TB (4x1TB drives) which I used in my windows installation, initialized as GPT, and I used "span" to make the single 2TB partition, and 720GB partition into one partition. I believe that Windows created a software RAID0. Ok, so now I've made the leap away from windows, and am going 100% into Linux (Debian, to be exact) and I'm trying to figure out how to mount this array. I've only done basic web/ftp/ircd server management on Linux before, and never anything with mounting drives. I'm a complete n00b at this stuff.

I have Win XP installed on one hard disk drive (HDD1) and Ubuntu 9.10 installed on another hard disk drive (HDD2). Win XP was installed first then Unbuntu 9.10 which set up a dual boot menu. Win XP will no longer boot because I changed the BIOS setting from IDE to AHCI. The problem this causes is described at [URL]. The problem is that if you installed Windows in IDE mode (ie you didn't use F6 and supply a driver disk), then simply changing the BIOS setting to AHCI mode and rebooting will cause Windows to fail and will require a repair install. Most people have been advising to reinstall Windows if you want AHCI enabled. I have read that Win 7 supports AHCI "out of the box" so instead of re-installing Win XP I want to install Win 7 to replace it. I would like to know in advance what installing Win 7 will do to the dual boot menu?

I have two SAS RAID controller cards in a Dell server in slots 2 & 3, both with an array hanging off them. I went to install a third card into slot 1, but then when it boots it says two of my sd's have bad magic number in the super-block and it wants me to create an alternative one, which I don't want to do. If i remove the new card, the server boots perfectly like it did before I added the new card. Is the new card trying to control stuff that isn't hooked up to it because its in slot 1, so its confusing RHEL?

I'm having a installation problem. I am trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop that is currently running Windows 7, and win7 is needed for use in projecting songs in our church services. The HD is a 500 gb already partitioned with the max. of 4 partitions. Win7 files are on the sda2 partition and my data files are on sda3. Sda1 and sda4 are smaller partitions, one is 3 gb's the other is 1 gb.
My question is, what is the best set up for me to install Ubuntu? I can't create an extended partition since I already have 4 partitions. I like my current partition set up as far as windows goes, but I would really like to get Ubuntu installed. I'm fairly new with Ubuntu, I like what I've seen so far. I had it installed with wubi in windows XP on a laptop that I just sold, and I've upgraded to the windows 7 laptop now, and I'm stuck!

I've recently applied for University and am happy to say I got an unconditional offer in Software Development as this is the case, and that I expect I'll be using mostly Windows software on my course, I decided to buy a hard drive from a friend at work, larger than the one I have now, and plan to install Windows 7 on it for the sake of my course and various other things (games etc.)
I prefer Ubuntu myself, and I've been using it long enough to feel comfortable migrating to Ubuntu altogether and ditching the windows partition I have now (I currently dual boot). Reasons being that I'm not much of a fan of dual booting as I think it can complicate things when its not entirely necessary and that there is also a Linux-based module on my course and between an installation going wrong on my personal hard drive or my university hard drive, I'd clearly go along with losing my music and pictures rather than losing all of my coursework :S
So my question is this: is it completely safe to blow away the windows partitions I have now on this hard drive? I made a LiveCD of my install through remastersys but I really would not like to go through setting up my themes, preferences, additional compiz plugins etc.

I looked through the install FAQ's etc.I thought I saw someone ask about doing this at one point but, of course, I can't remember where.I have a computer with a single SATA drive which runs Ubuntu9.1 I would like to use it in a dual boot machine. Typically I'd install windows first and then add my second drive and install Ubuntu to the second drive. That's how I usually do it.I want to put in a new drive, install windows, then get it to dual boot using this existing Ubuntu disk. I need to get Grub on the windows disk and get the option to dual boot to the existing Ubuntu disk. I think.
Is there a way I could do this without having to start all over on the Ubuntu disk?
