General :: Installing Ndiswrapper Without Pre-existing Wired Connection

Aug 20, 2010

Started using Fedora 13 from a liveUSB w/ persistent overlay. My netgear wg511 wireless card is not recognized, so I want to install ndiswrapper. Any tips for doing this, given my situation (liveUSB, no wired connection)? Or is there a work-around that doesn't involve ndiswrapper?

Ubuntu Networking :: Lost Wired Network Connection After Installing 10.04?

Nov 1, 2010

I had some problems installing 10.04, which I'm not going into here unless I have to, but it appears to be up and running now except my PC can't access the network, even though it's wired. This is the first time I've tried putting on a new build by myself as my son always used to do it (my PC used to belong to him many years ago, and is old, like me.)

General :: Installing Ndiswrapper As The Kernel Version Cannot Be Located

Jul 4, 2010

I am trying to install ndiswrapper, and have gotten as far as extracting the .gz file. However, when I type in the "make" command, it returns the error message:

Cannot find kernel version in /usr/src/linux-2.6.21.5, is it configured? Stop.

I do not have anything in the folder /usr/src, so I don't know where it might be. I'd like to install this, so it will make my switch to Linux easier.

General :: Installing On An Existing Windows RAID0

Dec 19, 2010

I administer a small network of computers connected to a windows 2003 server. The machines Dual boot Windows XP and CentOS 5.

My question is this. The machines are being upgraded to HP Z800 workstations. These workstations come with 2 1TB drives setup on a hardware RAID0. Can I install Linux on these machines, using the RAID0? Can I do an install as if it was just one hard drive? The machines came with Windows7 and I'd like to keep it intact including the RAID0. Can I do the install where it resizes the partition, adding the linux partition to the "drive".

If I can't use the existing windows RAID0 to install CentOS I was thinking of just installing another hard drive in the machines for it. This brings up another question, what would happen if I moved my Linux drive from one of the old workstations and put it in the new workstation, would it boot? I know windows wont boot like this because of the hdd controller drivers and I have a sneaky work around for this anyway but am not wanting to transfer the windows installation.

I am sure this is a driver issue I just don't know how to get the proper drivers. If I put my mouse over the wireless icon it says networking disabled. General :: Ubuntu Box Keeps Dropping Wired Network Connection?

Jul 11, 2011

I have an Ubuntu box, 11.04 x64, running on a Dual Opteron SFF box (iWill ZMaxDP... pretty old machine). Up until a few weeks ago, it was acting as a Windows 2008 Server, but i moved it to Ubuntu.

Anyway, the machine will not stay on the network for any amount of time, without falling off... I have changed network cards, cables, ports on the switch, etc, and nothing seems to work. I have a Windows 2003 box giving out DHCP addresses, and for a while, i actually tured that off and setup a second Ubuntu box to give IPs... it made no difference. The box gets an IP, and can ping outside for a bit (2 min or so) and then just looses connectivity... ifconfig shows it with an IP (i have tried both Static and DHCP config) and nothing seems to work...

General :: Get Wired And Wireless Connection At The Same Time Using NetworkManager?

Jun 15, 2011

I have a wireless connection to the internet, as well as a wired connection to a local network. When the wired connection to my local network is enabled, the wireless connection to the internet no longer works until I disconnect the ethernet cable.

(This setup used to work just fine when I was using Windows, but now doesn't seem to work. I wasn't using IP aliasing in Windows, but I am now, which may be causing the problem.)

My original connection to the internet was a wired one, at eth0, so once I got wireless enabled (on eth1), I created an IP alias to my local network of eth0:1 which is a static IP on my local network. The only configuration I did at all was to add a file named /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:1, with the following contents:

Code:

And NetworkManager just seemed to pick it up automatically - I didn't change anything else in NetworkManager or anywhere else.

(Also I use 'service NetworkManager start/stop' entirely rather than 'service network start/stop' to manage my connnections. i.e. I did 'chkconfig network off' when setting everything up initially.)

General :: Installing Fedora On Pre-existing Vista With Multiple Drives.

Jul 4, 2011

Right so my situation is a little obscure and from all the posts I've read through I can't find one that suits me well enough. My PC's hard drive recently went on the fritz so I backed up all my data, got a brand new Terrabyte hard drive and then put all my stuff on there. I also plugged in the fault drive as a secondary and ahev cleared most of the stuff off it. It's separated into two partitions; E: and F: but together make about 600 gigs. I then have two external Terrabyte hard drives, it's a long story but their connected via USB.

Now I really like the idea fo getting to grips with Linux. I don't want to use a LIVE CD, I've done that already and I want to see how I get along using it as a proper OS. I also really need to keep the Windows Vista for several reasons, most importantly for iTunes which I use to keep my iPhone and iPad up to date and I've heard iTunes and linux don't get along too well, even with programs like WINE. So obviously I'm looking to dual boot and keep all my data but what would be the best way to go about it? Stick it on my primary drive? Or on my slightly faulty drive? Or on one of my two externals? On the bright side, because I'm on a fairly new hard drive, my Vista runs really smoothly, and so I shouldn't encounter too many bugs that windows is renowned for a long the way...

I'd also like to be able to access all my data from both OSs so I don't have to keep jumping from one OS to another. Is that possible? or simple to accomplish?I have a pretty good Nvidia graphics card too, so I'd appreciate it if someone could explain how I get XGl working on Fedora once it's all set up.

Debian Configuration :: WiFi Connection Which Then Is Sent To A Wired Connection

Sep 22, 2015

The situation: The office has a WiFi network on one DSL line, which is used for our VoIP call center, and a wired network for our internal network and the majority of web surfing/traffic . Part of the office must be temperature controlled/monitored - we have a rather nice digital thermometer which is WiFi enabled.I have a Debian Wheezy box with a WiFi card and ethernet connection

What I'm trying to accomplish:Connect wifi enabled thermometer to WiFi network so it can automatically send temp updates (currently I have to do it manually via USB)Have the Wheezy box accept the downloaded file then send it to a back up server in the wired network

Side things that may be useful : Prefer to use wired connection for internet and apt and suchWiFi connection will really just be used for connecting to the thermometer

This [URL] .... topic got me thinking that there might be a way to bring the two networks together, but I don't know if that will wreak havoc on things. I know, the Windows and Mac OS don't like having ethernet and wifi at the same time, might Linux be better for this?

v&n had this to offer in the prior thread [URL] .... which I'll be doing more research on.

General :: Lost (wired) Eth0 After Installing Broadcom Bcm4328 Wireless Card / What To Do?

Dec 31, 2009

I have a dell mp1210 xps laptop. I just recently installed installed Ubuntu 9.10 and am very green. With difficulty I managed to install the drivers for the wireless card and now have wireless on the laptop. In order to get the wireless working I had to restart my computer, and once it booted up again the wireless works, but there is no trace of eth0-my wired network device (Broadcom BCM4401-B0) which was working fine before I got the wireless adapter working. Lspci still shows the device as it did when it was functioning, but ifconfig only shows my local loopback and wlan0 (my wireless device). I am not sure how eth0 got deleted, I am wondering if maybe I have to set up some sort of switching between the wired and wireless adapters so they are not both active at the same time. Any suggestions would be really nice, I have been digging through the forums, but I am unsure of what went wrong or what to do about it.

My searches have been fruitless and I only have so much longer that I can connect directly to the router. Then I have no internet connection. I have even thought about re-installing or distro hopping, but I like Fedora and don't really want to do that. This installed my Netgear WG311v3 Wi-Fi card on this machine using Fedora 14 x86_64 it took me a while to do so in the future I can (hopefully) follow this guide myself in the future and for anyone who is having problems. First thing you need to do is make sure your system and kernel is up-to-date:

Code:
su yum update next you need to make sure that the kernel headers are installed so you can compile ndiswrapper (which is no longer available on FreshRPMs) and GCC as well as svn to get the latest build of ndiswrapper:

Code:
su yum install kernel-headers gcc svn Now we need to get the latest build of ndiswrapper to make and install it; make sure you do this outside of root:

OpenSUSE :: Installing Windows Driver Via Ndiswrapper?

Feb 11, 2010

I am using ndisinstaller in openSUSE 11.2 to re-install a Windows driver. This is equivalent to ndisgtk in Ubuntu and is a GUI to help installing Windows driver via ndiswrapper. Note that you have to locate the .INF driver file in Windows partition, not Linux partition, or else ndisinstaller won't work. When I open ndisinstaller as root, it asks me if I want to re-use an "existing instance of ndiswrapper" or eliminate this manually.

If I choose "reuse existing ndiswrapper instance", the driver installation works but writing the module seems take forever. So my question is how do I eliminate an existing instance of ndiswrapper by hand? Please note that prior to using ndisinstaller, I have already removed any existing drivers and ndiswrapper modules to make a clean slate.
