Ubuntu Installation :: Partition On Existing Windows 7 Machine

I'm having a installation problem. I am trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop that is currently running Windows 7, and win7 is needed for use in projecting songs in our church services. The HD is a 500 gb already partitioned with the max. of 4 partitions. Win7 files are on the sda2 partition and my data files are on sda3. Sda1 and sda4 are smaller partitions, one is 3 gb's the other is 1 gb.
My question is, what is the best set up for me to install Ubuntu? I can't create an extended partition since I already have 4 partitions. I like my current partition set up as far as windows goes, but I would really like to get Ubuntu installed. I'm fairly new with Ubuntu, I like what I've seen so far. I had it installed with wubi in windows XP on a laptop that I just sold, and I've upgraded to the windows 7 laptop now, and I'm stuck!

i tried installing windows 7 on a partition on my laptop but i'm getting this message:"setup was unable to create a new partition or locate an existing system partition "i tried googling and found that it has something to do with the number of partitions:my hard disk layout right now:

What just happened was that I was experiencing some serious blue screen errors in Windows all of a sudden, so I loaded up my recovery partition for windows, and ran the "Restore complete system function". At some point, it had to restart, and I got the BIOS error "Unable to detect operating system". Eventually I got openSUSE to work again by reinstalling it using my DVD. However, now, whenever I load my windows partition, I get a windows error that says it cannot configure Windows on my hardware! The furthest it gets is a blue Windows screen that says "Please wait while Windows continues to configure your hardware."
My windows version is Vista, and I use openSUSE 11.3 as my primary partition. My question is this: How can I re-install Windows onto my partition? I have a recovery partition setup still, but I'm afraid that the Restore Complete System function will mess with my linux partitions again!
All I want Windows for is to play WoW! Running WoW through Wine is fail on my laptop for some reason, its far too slow and problematic. Please help me... some Linux forums just trashed me for using Windows at all, but its my only option available for my particular spec of computer to play this game, so that type of advice doesn't help me much. Feasible alternatives to a Windows partition would be nice, but Wine clearly doesn't work for me like I desire.

My company's default OS is Windows 7. I convinced my manager so that I could use Fedora 12, since I am mostly familiar with development environment in Fedora. However there are a few things I need in Windows 7, and I want to stop going back and forth in two OS'es in dual boot-up setting.
I've searched online for easy way to use the existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine. I first tried VMware's Vcenter Converter Standalone in Windows 7, but it failed with some error code, and searching the particular error code didn't turn up any solution. I also tried to use Sun's VirtualBox, but I get segmentation fault error in Fedora. I tried to see if VMware server has a tool, but installation exists with an error, and searching the web for the error code didn't turn up anything either.... I wonder if I am having this much difficulties because I am using x86_64 version of OS'es.
Anyhow, if anyone has done it successfully - using existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine in x86_64 version of Fedora 12.

What I am trying to accomplish, is have 3 partitions on my hard drive. The first one being Windows 35GB. The second being 15GB Ubuntu. The remaining just being backups. I have set up partitions for this, but I have failed thus far in finding a way to install to the Ubuntu partition I have created. Should I have left that space unallocated? How would I make this work?

I can't boot to Windows XP after recently installing Ubuntu (Ubuntu boots fine). The error that comes up (straight after selecting XP) is that it can't find "system32hall.dll".
Reason for the problem: Ubuntu is looking at the old, corrupted version of XP that I have. The 'real' version is on another partition, for reasons too lengthy to explain. Note: neither of these partitions were touched when installing Ubuntu - I placed Ubuntu in the pre-existing partitions I had setup when installing previous versions of Linux (last was Mandrake 8.)
Now, I can understand why it is looking at the old version, because it is on the first partition of the hard drive, "dev/sda1", the new version is on "dev/sda3" (nomenclature according to Ubuntu, obviously).
Question: How do I point the config file to sda3? I have tried setting root to "hd0,3" and "hd3,1" with no luck. Original code is below:

I recently upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10. I now have grub 1.98 and my problem is that when i select windows xp from grub it just goes to a black screen with a white flashing line. If i boot ubuntu it does the same thing for about five seconds then ubuntu loads right up. I hit e on windows xp in grub and this is what came up.

I then hit c on windows xp and entered each line on its own and the only error was this. error unknown argument '--fs-uuid'

My Laptop is Dell Inspiron 1525 with Dual boot Windows vista as well as Linux mint. I was trying to install Ubuntu over Linux Mint, but it is not detecting the existing partitions asking me to go ahead and edit the partitions manually (which I am not familiar with). Earlier when I was installing Linux Mint or SUSE, it was detecting the existing partitions and could install easily. Currently I am sure how to go about, but I would like to install Ubuntu badly.

I am trying to replace an existing ubuntu installation with the current debian testing release. But when it comes to select partitions to install on none of the existing partitions is visible. I only see my SATA hard drive empty. The existing installation of Windows is still bootable and fdisk as well as cfdisk correctly recognize the partition table while parted (which I assume is used by the installation process; all tools run from a live cd) is not:

I am not sure what parted's error message means. I can hardly imagine that it complains about the logical partitions with in the extended one. The reasons for the trouble might come frome the fact that sda4 is marked as primary partition (see cfdisk output). If this is the case, how can I repair this?

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

I have an issue with Gparted v0.19.0 (Jessie) which has replaced v0.12.1 (Wheezy) which works fine. I had hoped to ask this question in Gparted's own forum, but after three weeks and multiple attempts no-one has approved my account there.
Unfortunately, my existing partition structure (on two different laptops) seems to be invisible to the new version of Gparted. Since parted seems to be used by the Debian installer, the Jessie installer cannot install on these machines without repartitioning the entire disk. That means that on such machines, the only option is to wipe everything or install Wheezy, then edit sources.list to upgrade to Jessie.
Both Gparted v0.19.0 and the Jessie installer report the entire hard disk as a single Fat16 partition,The same partitions which are invisible to Gparted appear as normal in the Places sidebar, of either Thunar or the PCManFM file manager. They can be mounted and used, seemingly without issue (I have experienced the same problem under Ubuntu/Lubuntu 15.10). Below, is the shell output of fdisk, which can see the partition structure and parted, which cannot:

I have been upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04. Now, I want to install 10.10 from the beginning without losing the data in my current partitions but when I run the Maverick installer it recognize my disk as a whole with no partitions. From another posts, I suspect that the problem is in the partition list because it seems to be a duplicate partition but don't know how to fix it. This is the fdisk output:

I've recently applied for University and am happy to say I got an unconditional offer in Software Development as this is the case, and that I expect I'll be using mostly Windows software on my course, I decided to buy a hard drive from a friend at work, larger than the one I have now, and plan to install Windows 7 on it for the sake of my course and various other things (games etc.)
I prefer Ubuntu myself, and I've been using it long enough to feel comfortable migrating to Ubuntu altogether and ditching the windows partition I have now (I currently dual boot). Reasons being that I'm not much of a fan of dual booting as I think it can complicate things when its not entirely necessary and that there is also a Linux-based module on my course and between an installation going wrong on my personal hard drive or my university hard drive, I'd clearly go along with losing my music and pictures rather than losing all of my coursework :S
So my question is this: is it completely safe to blow away the windows partitions I have now on this hard drive? I made a LiveCD of my install through remastersys but I really would not like to go through setting up my themes, preferences, additional compiz plugins etc.

I looked through the install FAQ's etc.I thought I saw someone ask about doing this at one point but, of course, I can't remember where.I have a computer with a single SATA drive which runs Ubuntu9.1 I would like to use it in a dual boot machine. Typically I'd install windows first and then add my second drive and install Ubuntu to the second drive. That's how I usually do it.I want to put in a new drive, install windows, then get it to dual boot using this existing Ubuntu disk. I need to get Grub on the windows disk and get the option to dual boot to the existing Ubuntu disk. I think.
Is there a way I could do this without having to start all over on the Ubuntu disk?

I'm trying to set up a dual boot of Ubuntu & Windows XP.I have two hard disks installed - sda is 80GB and has an existing Windows setup on it, sdb is my 160GB data storage disk.When I have installed Ubuntu on other machines, it has detected any exisiting OS's and offered to install Ubuntu alongside them.
However, this time Windows doesn't seem to be detected - it says 'no other operating systems found' and wants to install to my second (i.e. sdb) disk. I was intending for Ubuntu & Windows to sit side-by-side on the first hard disk.Although I've installed Ubuntu before, I'm a bit of a novice and I'm not sure how to achieve this - where am I going wrong?

I have been using ubuntu for a little while so i'm not a total newbie. But im not very confident with installing the latest verion of ubuntu studio. Previously i upgraded to ubuntu studio through the terminal window from Jaunty. This time i want to do a fresh install via a DVD. I tried earlier but the part im confused about is the partitioning and formatting process. I have 2 hardrives. One of my hard drives has my XP OS on it along with my entire life. So I cant afford to make a mistake. The other has an older 32bit version of ubuntu studio on it.
I have looked online but I havent found much help. What i was thinking of is just unplugging my windows drive, doing a fresh install on the other. But then i wouldnt know what to expect when i boot up and plug in the XP drive.

I've configured my RHEL system to be used as tftp server. I've configured NFS,VSFTPD and DHCP too. Everything works fine, the clients are able to boot from PXE and get the kickstart information from the server and the installation completes successfully. Now the problem is the RHEL installation removes all the existing windows partitions. How do I make my system a dual boot? I've configured my kickstart to use "Remove existing Linux Partitions" and the problem still persists.

Two days ago I repartitioned my laptop HD and added the latest Ubuntu (2.6.35-25-generic) to the existing Vista and existing Ubuntu (2.6.32-28-generic via upgrades from 9.14(?)). Prior to this install it was using Grub with menu.lst from the old/upgrade Ubuntu. After the install the boot menu labels the partition with Vista as the Windows Recovery partition and the recovery partition item is no longer present.
At first I wondered how I could get Vista to boot. I found that SuperGrub cd would boot it OK. Then, it dawned on me that the boot menu item was not the recovery partition, but instead the Vista OS partition mislabelled . Vista loads just fine from it. The recovery partition is no longer listed as it was with Grub/menu.lst. SuperGrub will not boot the recovery partition, showing an error "missing BOOTMGR".
'os-prober' produces--

i have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:
try (0,0) : nfts5 : wubildr
try (0,1) : ext2 :
and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.

I have an Acer Aspire Netbook running a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu Netbook Version (Lucid Lynx if I am not mistaken?) Anyway I plan on selling this netbook and I need to remove the Ubuntu Partition and go back to just a full Windows Xp partition with it's recovery partition also.

I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my girlfriend's lenovo using a live disc. First we tried it out to show her the wireless would work fine (her previous lenovo was not ubuntu friendly at all). She's interested in keeping her windows 7 partition along with the lenovo recovery partition, so I tried doing a dual boot install. I manually moved the cursors setting the disk space on each partition, and we allowed Ubuntu to do the rest. Much to my dismay, the installation failed.
I've done some reading over the internet, and I think in our case it would be best to use a Wubi installation. We're interested in using 10.04, so where can we find a wubi installer of Ubuntu 10.04?
Also, any ideas why the installation might have failed? The iso was downloaded off the ubuntu main site, and we burned it using infrarecorder.

I crated unallocated space on vista disk using EASEUS partitioning software and installed ubuntu on it. I chose "use the largest free space" for ubuntu installation. Installation goes fine but only vista loads on restart...where is the installed ubuntu?

I will be helping a friend upgrade from 9.04 through to 10.04 LTS, and I am aware that the machine was installed with a separate home partition. I know a clean install is an option however I am tempted by online version upgrades with the thought that any apps they are using will be carried over. Is this a realistic hope? I know that medibuntu for example does not survive a version upgrade.
