General :: Lost Access To Vfat Formatted External HD

I did not find the solution to my problem reading other posts so I apologize in advance if this question has been solved in a previous thread.I recently started having input/output errors when trying to access directories on my external HD. Today I moved the content of my external HD to a single directory before starting a backup. Since then I can not access this backup directory anymore although the external HD automatically mounts when I turn it on.
I tried my luck starting the external HD in Windows but it wont show up in the explorer. What should I do to be able to mount it in windows and is there any way this would fix the problem?I'm running xubuntu kernel v 2.6.27-14-generic and the external HD is an acomdata.

I have 250 GB HDD, 150 GB has CentOS installed,I have formatted the rest 100 GB in vfat, mounted on /data/ folder, now the issue is only root have the write permission on that folder, i have tried all the commands, however i have reformatted it with ext3 and now issue is resolved, i just want to know that why it is not possible to set the permissin to everyone +w on vfat partition.

I recently got a new external hdd and formatted it to clear off the preloaded software seagate loaded on it for windows users. Anyway it worked fine but I realized I didn't name the drive what I wanted and since the format didn't take long at all I figured I'd do it again and name it what i meant to.
This time a message popped up and said error formatting drive
I removed it and now when I connect it, it doesn't appear to mount at all.

I was running OpenSuse and realized that I hated it. I backed up my bookmarks to a USB flash drive, formatted and installed Ubuntu 10.04.
On entering Ubuntu, I stuck the USB flash drive in and realized that the bookmarks never got copied. I've lost them. I have to have those bookmarks. What would be the best way to get them back?

I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?

within the last 24 hours I have lost a reiser formatted disk. It is not visible not with df or fdisk.Which tools do you normally use in a situation like that.

I have 2 HDD in my PC . The 2nd one is a 1TB Western Digital Harddisk which was formatted in Win XP NTFS and just 1 partition, using it for archieve (Film- Music - Apps ... ). I was trying to use fdisk command , but unfortunately destroy the data , format and partition it like this picture :

If a USB drive is used under Linux and Windows, what would be the best file system? FAT32?Would it harm to have the drive formated as NTFS?How reliable is Linux when writing to NTFS today and is it worth taking the risk?I am asking this because I am pretty sure that there are a lot of peoples out there with external drives that are formated in NTFS.The main reason for this is that a OS like Windows XP cannot format a FAT32 partition bigger then 32GB and without noticing users might format their drives to NTFS.

I need to access my EXT3 formatted partition in Vista. I am using Windows again for this game and my Ubuntu is messed up. EXT2IFS does not work in Vista, even with compatibility mode. When I open my drive it asks me to format it. EXT2FSD works but gives constant BSODs...

I had windows 7 and centos 5.5 dual boot earlier working fine.Today I had to format the windows partition and reinstall windows 7. Now I cannot access to my earlier CentOS partition.I need to access it without loosing anything on it. I tried with EasyBCD at Windows but it didn't help.Also tried to get files using an Ubuntu live CD but there that partition shows as LVM.What else I can do to boot CentOS again?

I have Mandrake 7.1 installed on a laptop and I have several problems that an upgrade would likely fix or provide a path that will support a fix. The Mousepad is irratic and the PCMCIA WiFi and Ethernet cards are not recognized. What's a good way to upgrade? (I can access the network from an external modem and from a dual-boot Windows 98 WiFi)

I have a 320GB external HDD with 2 partitions, both primary:
1. vfat 100GB
2. ext3 remainder
Both were formatted when I created them with qtparted. Windows 7 sees them, and says they are healthy, but does not recognize the vfat partition. Is it too big, perhaps? Short of moving everything off the vfat partition and recreating it with W7, how do I fix it? I think W7 uses some sort of extended fat32 now?

I can't seem to mount my local VFAT partition with username ownership; it is consistently mounted as daemon. I've tried to CHOWN and CHGRP the mount point of /media/SHARED (its location), but that doesn't work. I should include the reason in case you have other suggestions that are alternative to changing ownership on the mounted VFAT drive:
In my old Fedora 9, I ran Eudora under Wine. The program lived on my VFAT partition. I could hence run Eudora under both Windows and Fedora, which was really nice - even though I hardly boot into Windows anymore. While I did notice the username and group name were the same as they are under Fedora 14 fstab mounting - daemon - it still worked without a hitch. To note, the partition was also automounted in Fedora 9 in fstab.I just upgraded to Fedora 14. When I automount the drive through fstab, Eudora will not launch. Yet when I manually mounted the drive (and I noticed that the username and group are my local username, not daemon), Eudora launches fine. So while my solution, mounting the drive manually when Fedora 14 starts, does in fact work, it is a bit of a pain. Luckily I don't reboot too often!
In any case, I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions. Maybe it's just a mounting syntax issue; but as for mounting syntax in fstab, I used the same line as my F9 fstab.The line I used was: /dev/sda3 /media/SHARED vfat umask=0000,dmask=0000,uid=0002,gid=users,users 0 0

I have a vfat partition under RedHat RHEL5 that I currently must mount manualy after each boot. I would like it to auto-mount but I cannot find a way to do this without it becoming ro except for root. My other partitions auto-mount just fine. I have tried the vfat as a separate partition and as a VLM logical drive (as it currently is).
The fstab statement:
"/dev/VolGroup00/LogVolDos /dos vfat noauto,users 0 0"
allows me to mount it as a user. The statement:
"/dev/VolGroup00/LogVolDos /dos vfat defaults 1 2"
is what I use for other VLM partitions, but for the vfat it seems to only allow root access. Manually mount this partition is OK, it's just that I have sometimes forgotten and then it is not included in backups. What do I need to do to make the vfat auto-mount as accessible for a user?

So I am working on a clients PC, and after I saved their data on an external hard drive I left it plugged in while I reinstalled Windows for them.....I HATE Windows. Stupid OS doesnt know any better than to just go deleting everything. Ubuntu would have known better than to delete multiple hard drives like that.
Anyway, please tell me I can salvage this data for my client? It was probably just reformatted. The data should still be there right?

I have a problem I don't know how to solve. Today I bought a netbook and while waiting for the new Ubuntu Unity release to come out, I thought of trying out Crunchbang instead of Windows that came with it. Browsing on my Ubuntu desktop machine, I found a guide for making Crunchbang live USB stick, and i followed the procedure. However, I made a very stupid mistake. The guide said I should enter the command:
sudo dd if=/path/to/iso/crunchbang-10-alpha-01-openbox-i686.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M;sync
where "of=...." part should be replaced with the name of the HDD. I forgot that I have an external HDD mounted and mistakenly copied the data to it.
After this, I cannot see the content of my external HDD anymore. Instead, i have this 620mb large Crunchbang-install device.
I know what I did was stupid, but is there a way to get the content of my HDD back? I have some valuable data on it.

In what started as a quest to get free wifi, I have recently gotten in way over my head. After unsuccesfully trying to use a virtual drive, I decided to erase my HDD on my laptop completely, wiping out my Windows XP and installed Backtrack 4 in it's place.
My goal amongst others, was to create a 20% partition for Backtrack and run XP on the rest of it. Well, I couldn't figure out how to do it. My only option was format and install backtrack.
So now I'm typing on my iPhone cuz I know absolutely nothing about Linux or how it works. My computer has no Internet. It doesn't recognize my Ethernet NIC, my wireless card and probably alot of other stuff.
SO ANYWAYS I don't want to give up. I'm ready to learn. I guess the first order of business is to get my Ethernet Card working so I don't have to type on this damn phone. So how do I do it?
