General :: Install Firefox 3.5 On Unbuntu Server 9.10

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server on a machine primarily as a LAMP & File server. I also have installed Webmin with this.
The problem is oviously I need a browser to do this. I am having issues trying to install firefox 3.5 and the open correctly from terminal to access Webmin. I am very new to this especially commands wise to open Firefox. Idont know if I need to change directories to open it. A few guides I looked at said type in ~firefox/firefox. Which didn't work.
Also I saw something about profile which I haven't setup yet. Would I need to do this?

i have installed unbuntu 9.10 and i have even successfully installed ns2 2.33 in it , but i am not able to excute it as it is showing me this error bash: 2.33/tcl8.4.18-3/unix:/home/sangamesh/ns-allinone-2.33/tk8.4.18/unix: No such file or directory as in this version of ubuntu we have tk8.4.19 only but it needs tk8.4.18 , even the tcl8.4.19 also same problem.

I'm trying to get some insight on how to move forward. I have a bit of a problem. I am just starting out in unbuntu and I have no experience working with 2 os on my computer (coming from windows). I have a lot of files (music, pictures, movies) in windows, but I want to use them on unbuntu. Is there a way for me to have both os access those files, or better yet, is there a way to send all my files to unbuntu, so I can start deleting all my stuff in windows?At the moment, I'm planning to burn all my files to dvds (in windows), then just drop them off in unbuntu, but I'd love it if there was a way which didn't involve me burning tons of dvds...Oh yea, and programs too... can I transfer them, or do I need to just reinstall them on unbuntu (like stepmania, guildwars, dvd shrink, kmplayer, etc

I've had this unbuntu for over a year, and have never been able to get ANY of the drives to work. ie; the DVD-r, CD-r, or USB. I've installed all the 'restricted' extras it said it needed. if I open places,then computer, their icons show. but, as soon as I put in a disk or USB device--- their icon disappears, then nothing?? everything did work fine when I had WinXP installed. I've just been using unbuntu for the internet and I'm happy its working great. but, I really wish I could use all the other neat stuff. I really miss using my drives, and having fun with all the other stuff unbuntu offers.

at first with a single boot system(ubuntu) everything were fine with everything include second monitor ,then i installed vista too,now i have a dual boot system & i am very happy to get rid of crappy junk microsoft's software as much as i can,unbuntu performance is really wonderful to me,just i have one problem,my second monitor show very weird colors ,almost like a negative print,then i boot with vista & there everything are fine with my second monitor,then i guess i don't have any hardware or driver problem,any help or suggestion?I changed my visual setting from extra to non,in case if this problem is because of not enough memory or els,but iy didn't work. my loptop is a vaio vgn,4 gb ram,intel centrino 2- 2.66 ghz-ati radeon graphic card.

Been trying to get itunes going in unbuntu 11.04. Tried gtkpod and it kept crashing when trying to update database. Looked into itunes thru wine. I think I could load it in wine but all my mp3's are on a linux box - ext4. From what I understand, wine will look to a windows partition for the mp3's. I know windows cannot read ext4. All I need itunes for is to load and delete songs on a shuffle ipod. Don't need itunes store, etc so I don't care if that part works or not. Before I go to the trouble of itunes on wine: Is this assumption correct?

I have partitiond my hard drive on one side I run Kubuntu (and when I finish downloading; Ubuntu) on the other windows 7. However I dont know how to co run (and set-up) so I can swap between KDE GNOME and how to make Back track (I have on live C.D.) run with bash or KDE. Cuting this way to long story short, i am hoping one of you amazing peeps can tell me how to run backtrack, kunbuntu and Ubuntu on the same side of the hard drive??!!

I have a dell inspiron mini which came with unbuntu 8.04 LTS mini standard edition pre-insatlled and a recovery disk. However i would like a more accessible OS and have been trying to install windows xp but i can not get past EULA screen. I have tried this with different (new) copies and checked if the buttons involved are working properly they are. i have also tried to make a boot disk for ubuntu following Internet guides but apparently this version does not support that option.

I have just installed Fedora 15 and Firefox cannot find the server. I do have internet access, can use yum, can ping google.com, and can use google Chrome to access the internet OK. Any thoughts? It is not any big problem, since I can use Chrome, but just wondering what the problem might be with Firefox.

I am trying to install tomcat (apache-tomcat-6.0.24) on a Redhat machine.Post installation, I find the url: working fine untill I click on 'Tomcat Manager' where it gives me the following message: Failed to Connect.Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:8080.Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection.

This is really odd - all of a sudden, my firefox says "Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com" , and my pidgin will not connect saying host not found.However, I am typing this on the same computer using Opera. his is absolutely insane. I have no idea what caused it.. command line nslookup works great, and resolves everything.But firefox and pidgin will not resolve anything.
The only odd thing is this in messages:

I have a scond hand eee 701 4g pc which I think has the original xandros o/s. At the moment I havefirefox 2 installed and wish to upgrade. I have dowloaded firefox 3.6 15 to my home file but am unable to install. I have tried yurenju's method but get the message - no such file or directory.

I just installed ubuntu 10.04 on my dell pc and it working very well. I also connect linksys usb wireless card to pc and my pc receives network connection without any problem. When I try to open firefox browser it does say"firefox cant find the server at [URL]... and asking me to check network connection or make sure that firefox is permitted to access the web.

I am really trying to learn the heart of linux, and not rely on gui's and package managers for everything. I am trying to download firefox 3.6. I downloaded the arc file, and extracted it to my home folder, but I don't know what to do next. I am also clueless as to how to install tar or tar.gz files, and tell them where to go, etc. Firefox is the priority question here. I am sure I can get it from the package manager, but I want to learn to do it with the arc files, and tar files, etc, and not rely on the gui for everything like in Windows. I am a Linux newbie, converting to Linux for hobby and educational purposes, but I have no direction, or no sense of where to go, or how to learn. I am running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS.

just did Red Hat Linux (Fedora Core 2) install. It's the only OC on the machine. Boots and everything seems to work just fine. Everything but the operator, that is!
I want to install FireFox and Thunderbird and AVG (free) antivirus so I first went to the Mozilla site for a download, only to discover that the best way to install is as part of a Package Manager.
Fair enough - but what is a package manager? Part of the distro? Where do I get one for these items?
UPDATE - I figured out the Package manager thing and no , FireFox is not an option, nor is Thunderbird or any antivirus.
If I can't get a package manager, the site tells me that I can install with me as the only user by downloading and typing in a couple of commands (Unzip and run, I think). But I get a report that I need a something or other file (library?) for it to run. How do I find that file and why would I be the only user? Surely as root I can set it up for all users can't I?
I guess the short(er) question is: How does a new user download and install a program onto a new setup without a package manager?
Question 2 - this install is for a class and the instructor wants screen prints as proof I'm doing certain operations. How do I get a screen print of, say, a history listing and can I save the screen print or view into a file for submission?

I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.
