General :: Can't Get Any Of The Drives To Work In Unbuntu?

I've had this unbuntu for over a year, and have never been able to get ANY of the drives to work. ie; the DVD-r, CD-r, or USB. I've installed all the 'restricted' extras it said it needed. if I open places,then computer, their icons show. but, as soon as I put in a disk or USB device--- their icon disappears, then nothing?? everything did work fine when I had WinXP installed. I've just been using unbuntu for the internet and I'm happy its working great. but, I really wish I could use all the other neat stuff. I really miss using my drives, and having fun with all the other stuff unbuntu offers.
i have installed unbuntu 9.10 and i have even successfully installed ns2 2.33 in it , but i am not able to excute it as it is showing me this error bash: 2.33/tcl8.4.18-3/unix:/home/sangamesh/ns-allinone-2.33/tk8.4.18/unix: No such file or directory as in this version of ubuntu we have tk8.4.19 only but it needs tk8.4.18 , even the tcl8.4.19 also same problem.
I'm trying to get some insight on how to move forward. I have a bit of a problem. I am just starting out in unbuntu and I have no experience working with 2 os on my computer (coming from windows). I have a lot of files (music, pictures, movies) in windows, but I want to use them on unbuntu. Is there a way for me to have both os access those files, or better yet, is there a way to send all my files to unbuntu, so I can start deleting all my stuff in windows?At the moment, I'm planning to burn all my files to dvds (in windows), then just drop them off in unbuntu, but I'd love it if there was a way which didn't involve me burning tons of dvds...Oh yea, and programs too... can I transfer them, or do I need to just reinstall them on unbuntu (like stepmania, guildwars, dvd shrink, kmplayer, etc
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server on a machine primarily as a LAMP & File server. I also have installed Webmin with this.
The problem is oviously I need a browser to do this. I am having issues trying to install firefox 3.5 and the open correctly from terminal to access Webmin. I am very new to this especially commands wise to open Firefox. Idont know if I need to change directories to open it. A few guides I looked at said type in ~firefox/firefox. Which didn't work.
Also I saw something about profile which I haven't setup yet. Would I need to do this?
at first with a single boot system(ubuntu) everything were fine with everything include second monitor ,then i installed vista too,now i have a dual boot system & i am very happy to get rid of crappy junk microsoft's software as much as i can,unbuntu performance is really wonderful to me,just i have one problem,my second monitor show very weird colors ,almost like a negative print,then i boot with vista & there everything are fine with my second monitor,then i guess i don't have any hardware or driver problem,any help or suggestion?I changed my visual setting from extra to non,in case if this problem is because of not enough memory or els,but iy didn't work. my loptop is a vaio vgn,4 gb ram,intel centrino 2- 2.66 ghz-ati radeon graphic card.
Been trying to get itunes going in unbuntu 11.04. Tried gtkpod and it kept crashing when trying to update database. Looked into itunes thru wine. I think I could load it in wine but all my mp3's are on a linux box - ext4. From what I understand, wine will look to a windows partition for the mp3's. I know windows cannot read ext4. All I need itunes for is to load and delete songs on a shuffle ipod. Don't need itunes store, etc so I don't care if that part works or not. Before I go to the trouble of itunes on wine: Is this assumption correct?
When working in command mode, what are some commands to use to query a USB drive? How do I look for it's "name" if I don't know it? I know once I find it and can use it normal cd and ls commands would work. It's just finding the drive, maybe mounting it, etc.
I have a 3 year old PC with 4 internal SATA ports. My old SATA hard drives, all smaller than 2TB, work fine. If I buy a 3TB SATA hard drive, will it work in Linux? Will Linux with GRUB be able boot from such a hard drive without a BIOS upgrade? With a BIOS upgrade? It's fine for me to upgrade my Linux to the newest kernel.
I have a FAT32 external USB hard drive with a bunch of stuff I want to copy onto a RHEL server. Is it as simple as it is on a Mac or PC where I just plug it in and it will show up, then I can copy all the files off of it?If it is, how do I safely remove the drive after I'm done with it?
I've been through a lot of the posts already, but nothing seems to solve my problem. I have Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 dual installed (Windows was installed first). Everything has been working fine until a few weeks ago when I accidentally left a USB drive plugged in when I restarted my computer from Windows.
Ever since then, whenever I have restarted my computer from Windows grub2 has failed (it does not fail when I restart from Ubuntu). I get a varying message like Grub loading. The symbol ' ' not found. Aborted. Press any key..where the part between the single quotes is usually different each time. When this happens I have to reinstall Grub2 from a live disk, which is becoming a bit of a pain.
I've been reading around, but I don't really have a great understanding yet of how hard drives and partitions work in general, and so I haven't been able to work out what the source of this problem is.
I have partitiond my hard drive on one side I run Kubuntu (and when I finish downloading; Ubuntu) on the other windows 7. However I dont know how to co run (and set-up) so I can swap between KDE GNOME and how to make Back track (I have on live C.D.) run with bash or KDE. Cuting this way to long story short, i am hoping one of you amazing peeps can tell me how to run backtrack, kunbuntu and Ubuntu on the same side of the hard drive??!!
So, at the moment I have a 7TB LVM with 1 group and one logical volume. In all honesty I don't back up this information. It is filled with data that I can "afford" to lose, but... would rather not. How do LVMs fail? If I lose a 1.5TB drive that is part of the LVM does that mean at most I could lose 1.5TB of data? Or can files span more than one drive? if so, would it just be one file what would span two drives? or could there be many files that span multiple drives drives? Essentially. I'm just curious, in a general, in a high level sense about LVM safety. What are the risks that are involved?
Edit: what happens if I boot up the computer with a drive missing from the lvm? Is there a first primary drive?
I have a dell inspiron mini which came with unbuntu 8.04 LTS mini standard edition pre-insatlled and a recovery disk. However i would like a more accessible OS and have been trying to install windows xp but i can not get past EULA screen. I have tried this with different (new) copies and checked if the buttons involved are working properly they are. i have also tried to make a boot disk for ubuntu following Internet guides but apparently this version does not support that option.
Currently having windows xp as guest OS in Virtual box, everything works PERFECT except the USB drive or devices attached, tried all the possible solutions posted on the internet but nothing is working. I want XP to work with USB drives and connections
I have windows7 on sda1.I have ubuntu natty on sdb1 I just purchased 2 more sata hard drives I have 2 sata burners how do I get my 2 new hard drives to work I plugged them in but no boot screen I have six sata slots
Only the Computer bookmark works; if I click on the others, nothing happens. If I start Docky from terminal, this is the error message I get when I click on the bookmarks
Code: [Error 14:08:03.018] [SystemService] Error opening files. The application doesn't support files/URIs or wasn't found This worked earlier today when I set up the bookmarks plugin, but all of the sudden it's dead. Any ideas how to fix this?
I have one desktop and two laptops. It is strange to find that none of the three systems play VCD, when I use Totem, Totem-xine, Gxine or VLC media player, even with the codecs updated. Worse, each of the three DVD players then act in a loop, seeking the LG DVD-RAM drive endlessly. But the drives otherwise work very well and I also write DVDs and CDs often.I have tested the VCDs in Windows machines with VLC media player, and the VCDs work wonderfully. This is kind of strange. So I thought may be I should report this.
The installation went smoothly however, I have installed SuSE11.4 on my 2nd Hard Drive. Now Grub doesn't work and I want to know where and how to install it.
i installed ubuntu desktop 11.04 on my acer aspire one 751h and found that the wifi didnt work. the netbook remix was the same so i went through all the previous releases up until 8.0.4.4 which worked fine on the live cd. so i tried to install but the installer didnt see my main hard drives only the usb i was using to install. so i tried using wubi installer which only left me with this screen when i tried to load up ubuntu.
I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.
so I setup a raid ten system and I was wondering what that difference between the active and spare drives is ? if I have 4 active drives then 2 the two stripes are then mirrored right?
I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data
I recently had issues with the latest version of the Linux Kernels and I got that fixed but ever since that has happened none of my Drives will mount and they aren't even recognized.
I am new to Linux and was wondering how to make dual booting Windows and Ubuntu from 2 separate drives work. I have dual booted from the same drive but never different ones. If I install Ubuntu on the second drive how will I configure the system to let me choose on start up?
I suspect this is not new but I just can't find where it was treated. Maybe someone can give me a good lead.I just want to prevent certain users from accessing CD/DVD drives and all external drives. They should be able to mount their home directories and move around within the OS but they shouldn't be able to move data away from the PC. Any Clues?
i have recently setup and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a virtulal drive usingVMWare 6.04, installed the desktop gui as well, I need to add other drives for data and loggng, which I did in the VMWare side. I can see the 2 drives in ubuntu, but can not access them, I get he unable to mount location when I try. How can resolve this please as I need these to virtual drives to be used as data drives.
