I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)
I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.
So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?

Aug 10, 2010I havent used Linux in a long time. I dug up an old copy of Suse (version8.2), and installed it on an old 599MHZ PC. Ive been trying to update the various libraries to be able to get a updated version of Firefox installed. Is there any chance that this can work? I need to know if Im wasting my time and should just put winxp on this PC. Also, I cant get any repositories working. I assume the default ones I have on the Suse installation are bad and the ones for the later versions will not work.

Apr 15, 2010Since yesterday firefox (Namoroka) has been constantly freezing; prior to yesterday it worked perfectly. I've tried un-installing and re-installing, but that didn't fix it. I even tried un-installing Namoroka and installing firefox 3.5 (via apt-get install firefox-3.5), but somehow I continue to get firefox 3.6 (aka Namoroka). Anyone know how to resolve my Namoroka issues or how to install the seemingly more stable 3.5 version? I don't know if this makes a difference, but I originally had installed ubuntu and then installed kde (kubuntu-desktop) desktop on top of it. And yes, I've checked my sources.list to make sure mozilla-daily repository is not listed.

Aug 27, 2010I have dowmloaded the latest version of Gnome Nanny, but have run into an instal problem at the first hurdle:
I have extracte the folder to Documents: Cd/ to the folder and run the ./configure command and get this message: No package 'pygtk-2.0' found
I have checked the install files and edited the lines which contain the above to now read pygtk -2.0 >=2.8 as 2.8 is the version of python I have installed. In package manager it only goes back to v2.2.
How I can get around this error?

Aug 4, 2010I think there is something wrong with my Wine setup, but I don't know how to fix it or even what it is. Others have gotten this program to work without problems in Wine. This is the console output that I get from Wine before it crashes. What could be the problem?
I tried removing wine wine directory so that it would auotomatically get recreated when trying to run firefox. Firefox still crashed, but new information was output:

I am not sure which version, but I think its Edubuntu and I do not know how to actually open and install a downloaded program file from the web. A specific example is Adobe flash player. It goes into a list and asks me to open it with Archvie Manager, but after that I am lost.

Where do the commands go? I cant make it work in terminal. How do I get back to "home" from where i am now? example /home/mydesktop/. I am working in mydesktop. I have downloaded some packages that pkcon search will not find, but when I try to install them using "synaptic" it cant find the packages i dl. So I found this tutorial.

Jan 8, 2010Firefox / Web Browser Can't ipen downloaded images.I have been using Firefox 3.0 with good success, and recently switched to Firefox 3.5 (unbranded version,called A Web Browser).I was looking around in Google images and downloading a few images in Web Browser 3.5, when my problems began.Firefox and Web Browser run off the same profile, and neither browser will open image files correctly.I call Web Browser WB for short.All of a sudden I cannot open jpg images.I saved image as and when the download was complete, I tried to open it.WB needed an application to open with, so I selected to open the containing folder instead. WB needed an application to open with again.
Not knowing the name of the Ubuntu image viewer, (which is eog for Eye of Gnome) I went over to /usr/bin and selected the document viewer, evince, to open the jpg image, which didn't work, so I selected nautilus as the application to open the folder with.Now I can open the folder all right, and from there, I can open the jpg picture from within that folder, but I am now told in the WB and Firefox download window that /path/ to/picture.jpg is not a folder in response to my trying to open the downloaded image.I performed some other checks:I can successfully download and open a pdf document;I cannot open a png or gif image, for they are not folders.
A check of Preferences and Applications tab shows no listing for jpg, gif or png or the word image under content type. There is no provision there to create a new entry, either.I checked and compared Firefox Preferences Applications tab with that of Web Browser. They appear to be identical in content.What do I do next? I will log out of 9.04 and back in again, and if that doesn't work, I will restart the computer after I finish my post. Then I will come back with the findings.

May 9, 2011after few years being limited with my pc configuration (windows OS) I realized that linux or it's distributions is the best invention in 21 century. And finally I am starting use it. openSUSE 11.4 installaition succesful, I updated it and it looks I don;t have any problems, but I got few questions.
1. How install older version of mozilla firefox internet browser here? I can't install some plugins because it's a firefox beta 12 version, for example. I am quake fan, o I like play quake live, but i can't install quake plugin, because my firefox is beta version.
2. Does I got all drivers instantly installed to my mashine? ATI video drivers, sound drivers ect??
3. Are there any How-To guides which can teach me, how I can improve my desktop? gadgets, 3D desktop ect...?

Jul 24, 2011I've upgraded Maverick to Natty, and since then I'm having one problem with Firefox.
I have a list of downloaded files in FF. Clicking on every file (pdf, png, iso, etc) gives me an error, like: "Can't open <filename>: This location is not a directory". The error message is the same as if I'd run nautilus <filename>, and in fact it seems to originate from nautilus. Also FF seems to ignore my settings under Preferences -> Applications, where I can choose what program to use for different file types.
