General :: How To Select A New Desktop Computer - GNU

Dec 15, 2010

How do you select a new desktop computer?... with insufficient knowledge about setting up GNU/Linux.

Previous attempts at explaining the answer to this haven't worked out yet !... so, for example, an iMac might solve all the tricky things as opposed to figuring out how to learn GNU/Linux that appears to be something for a more advanced computerist.

Ubuntu :: USB Stick Into Desktop - Select "Try Ubuntu Without Making Changes To Computer"

Oct 2, 2010

I've successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop but I'm having trouble even trying it on my desktop. I tried making both a USB installer and a CD from the .iso image, but when I pop in the CD or insert the USB stick into my desktop and select "Try Ubuntu without making changes to this computer", it manages to get to the chime but nothing is displayed. Apparently the OS hangs up after that or there's a problem with the display. Does this mean Ubuntu will not run on my desktop? I have experienced this not only with Ubuntu 10.04, but other versions too, like Kubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 9.04. Laptop Specs : Acer Aspire 4520, AMD Turion X2 TL-58 (Dual Core 1.9GHz), 2GB DDR2-800, Nvidia 7000M GPU, Nvidia 610M chipset (?), WD 320GB mobile hard disk. Desktop Specs : AMD Phenom II X3 720, MSI 785GM-E65, 2GB DDR3-1333, ATI HD5670 1GB (Sapphire), Realtek ALC889 audio, WD 1TB Green Power HDD, two LG optical drives, TP-Link TL-WN781N PCIE Wifi-N adapter. Is there any way I can try Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop without making changes to it? FYI I've successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop using an ATI HD3200 GPU.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Find A Way To Watch Videos From Main Desktop Computer On Another Computer?

Jul 9, 2011

I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.

What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

General :: Want To Build Desktop Computer With New Components?

Apr 25, 2010

I want to build a desktop computer. I will be running Linux Mint on it, probably the LXDE community edition. I use it for school (homework and studying), research on the net (general browsing and specific research on Linux stuff since I hope to one day open my own Linux computer store), and for listening to music and watching videos, things like that. I am not a power user, adn I don't plan to be one any time soon. But I am learning how to work in GNU/Linux, since I want to make a living that way.

Currently, though, I just need a good computer made out of new components, that will work correctly. So What kinds of components to get. I need a motherboard, a CPU (I prefer AMD), a hard drive (I will run SATA), and RAM. I have a DVD burner on my current computer, and I can use that in my new system. I plan to put my new computer together in the tower my current computer is using. I am just looking for some knowledgeable suggestions here for what to get to run my computer the best.

OpenSUSE Install :: Select Desktop In Grub ?

Dec 20, 2009

I have installed KDE as my desktop, I have managed to get XMBC working from KDE. At times it would be nice just have XMBC load automatically from boot up. I know that its possible to have XBMC load as the Desktop Enviroment.

Is it possible to have something like this setup for Grub?

1 - openSUSE - KDE (Default)
2 - openSUSE - KDE (SafeMode)
3 - openSUSE - XMBC
4 - Windows XP

If so is it also possible to get more fancy and have KDE goto a login screen and XMBC auto login?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Select Session At Login / No Desktop - What To Do?

Mar 15, 2010

Just recently I noticed that I suddenly couldn't open any folders, just getting a message in my bar saying it was opening the folder, then it'd immediately close. I also could not right click on my desktop. I removed and then reinstalled Nautilus, then reboot, but now my problem has worsened.

I can no longer select a session type at the login screen, and after logging in I just get a small terminal window in the top left of my screen while the rest is the background for the gnome login screen.

Debian Multimedia :: Select Multiple Desktop Environment Using Startx?

Jan 25, 2011

I use Debian Squeeze and I have the following desktop environment installed: fluxbox, lxde, openbox and icewm. I make login in text mode and I start X using startx command manually in terminal. When I do that, fluxbox is loaded, because my ~/.xinitrc is configured this way:

#!/bin/sh
# fix dbus problem
eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
# start session
exec startfluxbox

[Code]...

And "%session" is the variable value (fluxbox/lxde/openbox/icewm) chosen during the graphical login. This script works with Slim, but I want to login in a non-graphical mode. Could I use this script somehow to do a non-graphical login using startx? Is there some way that I could run startx with some parameter that it would pass the "%session" value to .xinitrc?

Red Hat :: Unable To Select PNGs As Desktop Wallpaper - JPEG Backgrounds

All our desktops are RHEL 4.8 too. Also, I'm only able to select PNGs as desktop wallpaper - JPEG backgrounds just appear as plain white when selected(!) Has anyone seen this before and knows of a fix?

Debian Installation :: Unable To Select And Install Desktop Managers In Net-install?

Dec 23, 2015

I downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.

However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.

General :: Cousin Unplugged The Computer - Freezes And The Computer Reboots Over And Over

Apr 17, 2009

I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.

I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?

Fedora Networking :: Configuring NAT On Desktop Computer

May 17, 2011

Yesterday i've installed Fedora 14 x64 on my desktop PC. Everything is working just fine, but then i came to the problem of sharing internet connection for other computers (strictly speaking, two laptop ones) that i use at home.

I know, there were many articles that cover that problem, but nevertheless i was unable to make the things work.

So, going to the point (i would point it out for clarify):

1) My desktop computer has two Ethernet interfaces (eth0 and eth1) and single WiFi one (wlan0), that is not used at the moment.

2) Desktop's eth0 is connected directly to the internet via cable; interface is configured to work in DHCP mode and it is working properly.

3) Desktop's eth1 is connected to the router (WRT54GL, as far as i can remember model) and it was used (under Windows XP) to provide shared internet connection; it is configured to have static IP of 192.168.0.1 with mask of 255.255.255.0 (default settings for XP I-net Connection Sharing) and i've configured it in such way in Fedora.

3) Router (connected to the eth1 in desktop) acts also as DHCP server, that assigns IP addresses for all (but already static-assigned desktop) connected computers (no mater, cable or WiFi). Newly connected computer receives IP of 192.168.0.x, where x lies within range 3..63 (1 and 2 are reserved for desktop and laptop itself, respectively), mask of 255.255.255.0 and gate / DNS of 192.168.0.1

4) Both laptops have enabled DHCP (one uses XP, while the other uses Fedora 14 32bit)

When i connect laptop, it receives IP / mask properly from router's DHCP, but i have no idea how to configure desktop to route I-net packets from eth1 to eth0. First thing i've made was to enable IP forwarding, by adding line.

Code:

Code:

For the moment i have two questions:
1) How to check whether internet packets are routed properly ?
2) How to enable (or "route") DNS ? Is there a need to configure DNS on desktop ? Or somewhat DNS packets can be "routed", since during eth0 autoconfiguration it already receives DNS addresses from i-net provider ?
