I'm sure there is something I have done wrong. I have installed GNOME, but on start up it doesnt give me the option to select it. How can I use GNOME?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use Debian Squeeze and I have the following desktop environment installed: fluxbox, lxde, openbox and icewm. I make login in text mode and I start X using startx command manually in terminal. When I do that, fluxbox is loaded, because my ~/.xinitrc is configured this way:

exec startfluxbox

And "%session" is the variable value (fluxbox/lxde/openbox/icewm) chosen during the graphical login. This script works with Slim, but I want to login in a non-graphical mode. Could I use this script somehow to do a non-graphical login using startx? Is there some way that I could run startx with some parameter that it would pass the "%session" value to .xinitrc?
I have the Suse DVD with me. I need to know if I will get the KDE or the Gnome Desktop features installed as Default.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a question about switching between desktop environments like kde and gnome. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 with gnome 2.x and with a really cool theme I found and mixed. I would like to check kde desktop because I kinda like the appearance of it. I have also cairo dock and compiz configured for my needs. my question is whether I can switch to kde desktop without losing my customized gnome environment if I decide to switch back to gnome? (I know that to switch session you need to log out but that's not the point) the next question is how can I install kde without losing the customized gnome theme I have ?( if the answer for the first question is negative)
the final question is whether I lose data when I switch desktop and if do than what specifically.
Is the new Ubuntu still running with Gnome as the desktop environment? I seem to remember hearing somewhere that it was something else - does that mean I could uninstall Gnome?

Its a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to be able to use gnome desktop environment and connect to it with NX Client from my windows 7.
I have done the basics..
update
upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
I have done this installations a couple of times before and everytime it's been working for me.
I emailed their support about it as well.
They told me it should work by just doing these first steps, but since it didn't they asked to take a look at it. So they did.
I got this mail back from them:
It seemed that your server is missing some packages/services.
Therefore, I need to ask you first if you acknowledge the ability of being charged with the additional support fee of 37,25 Euro per 15 minutes support?
I will never pay more for 15 minutes of support then I payed for the server thats for sure..

I have been having some problems with it, when I start my laptop sometimes it shows my desktop background but never seems to load all the icons and everything it sits there with the mouse pointer and a the desktop background screen without icons. The second problem is that when I suspend it I can never get the screen to work again not even by moving the mouse or typing anything in.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI didn't notice any relevant complaints regarding 11.2 in the archives. The bootup & shutdow may be different problems. Randomly my recent install boots up fine or hangs with a blank black screen. A Ctl Alt F2 gets me to a prompt. Startx returns a lockfile comment that X is already running.
From here I can shut 11.2 down and restart it OK. There must be a bootlog kept in /var somewhere. I haven't tried the non-automatic bootup. The shutdown randomly drops back to the logout screen. Usually a shutdown command from there will shut it down. Sometimes shutdown doesn't work, but restart will finish the shutdown.
I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

Is it possible to have something like this setup for Grub?
1 - openSUSE - KDE (Default)
2 - openSUSE - KDE (SafeMode)
3 - openSUSE - XMBC
4 - Windows XP
If so is it also possible to get more fancy and have KDE goto a login screen and XMBC auto login?
Never thought much about it until now a but is it possible to get the desktop kernel at install with 11.3 DVD ? I always get default-kernel and have to do the kernel dance to get the desktop-kernel I prefer. I'm familiar with the multiversion = kernel-desktop and methods to retain different versions. Just wondering.

During the install, I accidentally chose to install "Desktop environment" when I meant to de-select it (I hit enter, which was obviously the wrong key to de-select) so what should I do now? Should I restart the install, and be more careful the next time the task selector comes up?
