View 1 RepliesJust now i downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 beta editionI don't know how to unhide the Computer, Home, and Trash desktop icons in GNOME. I already tried gconf-editor -> apps -> nautilus -> desktopCheked the box beside computer_icon_visible, home_icon_visible, and trash_icon_visible. I already tried it in Ubuntu 10.04 without success.
View 3 Replies View RelatedDownloaded and played latest Ubuntu (10.10) to get an idea of how it works (without actually installing it). Currently i use windows 7. When I restarted my computer all my desktop icons had disappeared. I still have the programs in my documents file or wherever but my desktop is clear. Is there any way i can restore them without doing it one by one? i.e. get back to my previous state.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHow to freeze all icons on the Gnome desktop so that a normal user cannot change?
I have Debian Lenny installed.
I have lost some icons from my desktop, they are, firefox, yast, thunderbird, emacs, the space and the names are still there, and when I hover the mouse over the space, it is highlighted as it should be. The application opens and runs as normal when I click on the space where the icon should be. The icons are also missing from the favorites bar on the left side and also from the panel top left when the app is running.I have tried, rebuilding the icon cache in 'usr/share/icons/hicolor', and also all othercon caches for that matter, and no difference. I tried uninstalling and installing the app, no differenence. I tried changing themes and icons from Tweak Tool, no difference. As far as I can see the icons are there in the hicolor directory
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if in Gnome you can organize icons by Name/Type/View/Size and if you could organize them from Top to Bottom, Left to Right, etc?
Example:
Normally when you clean up icons they are organize in the following manner:
[X]
[X]
[X]
[X]
Left to Right, Top to Bottom organization would be like this:
[X] [X] [X] [X]
I prefer it this way and also KDE has it.
I am running CentOS 5.4, which I am occasionally managing via VNC from windows machine. This all occured after one long VNC session although I can't confirm this was the real reason. I also must say that I've seen some posts from people that had the same problem, but not anything helpful. Here is what happens:
Even if I start the machine from scratch I get the following error messages just before the login prompt and type of session window shows:
COULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE IMAGE FILE FORMAT FOR THE FILE '/USR/SHARE/GDM/THEMES/TREEFLOWER/BACKGROUND.PNG
THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE THEME AND THE DEFAULT THEME COULD NOT BE LOADED. ATEMPTING TO START THE STANDARD GREETER.
If I choose GNOME and login I get more errors (for every icon I guess) saying:
COULD NOT LOAD ICON. UNRECOGNIZED FILE FORMAT.
Desktop then loads but there is no background image (other backgrounds don't work either) and the icons are question marks. All the menus and programs work normally.
KDE on the other hand works normally with all visuals, so I assume there must be something wrong with GDE PNG library or something, maybe GDE corruption. If I make another user it's the same story.
I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

I tried copying .gnome2 from my personal machine to another computer hoping my desktop layout would be manifested on the second computer, but it wasn't. What else do I need to copy from my home directory to the new machine to make this happen?
Also, is there a way to do the same with Firefox so that I don't have to reinstall the extensions? Copying .mozilla carried my bookmarks, but not my extensions. v

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed pardus with kde4 and there's the ability to have "widgets" but i can't seem to scatter any files across the desktop. There're files in my /home/rabbit/Desktop folder but they don't show up on the desktop. I just want to know if this is just how kde4 is supposed to work?It seems odd if it is. I think the whole point of the desktop is to have commonly used files and programs just laying about
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to get rid of all and every one icon in the desktop. The desktop environment is Xfce4. Is there an easy way of doing it?
Note: Xfce4.org has only mailing lists. No fora.
migrating from windows to Gnu/Linux: familiar with Right-click >> Arrange-icons-automatically, while under my KDE & XFCE this feature is something I wanted.
This code is not mine: I only copied this from where I found, from the ubuntuforums authored by a member logged as user PGScooter, you may read him/her directly from here.
Procedure:
Copy the following code:
Code:
#make sure you change 'user' on line 4 to the username of the desktop you want to organize
use strict;
use warnings;
my $conffile='/home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0.rc';
open(CONF,"$conffile") or die "can't find the config file";
[Code]....
{if you run Kde you may replace that xfce4 to kde whatever is found in your current directory.
Log out. Log in as that user again. The icons are arranged this time. It worked for me automatically. I am running Xfce4 over a Slackware 12.2.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
