Debian Installation :: Unable To Select And Install Desktop Managers In Net-install?

Dec 23, 2015

I downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.

However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Select Options To Install From USB

Apr 30, 2011

I have just tryed to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto a USB to install on a netbook. I used the software recomended to prep the USB and booted to it.

In the opening menu where you can select to install on a partition I am unable to press enter, it seems to just reset the menu. The keyboard seems to be working fine because I can use the arrow keys.

I have been unable to find a solution to this problem online, all I have found is this simular issue, with no resolution.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Select Individual Updates For Installation?

May 3, 2010

I appear to be unable to select individual updates for installation anymore from the Yast Online update screen. I use this to install updates manually on 11.1. But everytime I think I've chosen an update to install, all the updates listed get installed, and not just the one I've chosen. For example I just chose a "Fuse security update" to install and clicked the "Install" button. Nothing further happens until I click "Apply". Then all patches listed under the "All available" listing get applied. How do I just apply the patches that I want to ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Select Desktop In Grub ?

Dec 20, 2009

I have installed KDE as my desktop, I have managed to get XMBC working from KDE. At times it would be nice just have XMBC load automatically from boot up. I know that its possible to have XBMC load as the Desktop Enviroment.

Is it possible to have something like this setup for Grub?

1 - openSUSE - KDE (Default)
2 - openSUSE - KDE (SafeMode)
3 - openSUSE - XMBC
4 - Windows XP

If so is it also possible to get more fancy and have KDE goto a login screen and XMBC auto login?

Ive tried to burn the DVD several times, on 2 different machines, but no luck so far.

Debian Multimedia :: Mulling FVWM And Desktop Managers

Sep 10, 2011

I already have a pretty comfy setup, with Openbox over LXDE, but I'm curious about something: Even though I started out with LXDE, I removed the lxpanel and replaced it with Tint2, then I removed the LXDE right-click menu and replaced it with the Openbox menu. Finally, I replaced PCmanfm with Thunar, and run my wallpaper on Nitrogen. In fact, the only thing that says "LXDE" anymore is the logout menu, and if I could replace that with something sleeker that fit my theme, i would.

Question: Would it have made more sense to simply not install LXDE at all? I've heard of people who say they just run Openbox. Do they mean they have to run it on top of something like LXDE, or do they just have Openbox and nothing else? It sounds like that's what I could have done here and had virtually the same thing. Am I right?

Also, I've heard a lot about FVWM, and I'm curious as to whether it's that much better than what I have now. Is there a way to "try it out?" I don't want to replace a thing that I have here now, at least until I decided I liked FVWM better (which I don't know I will). There's very little i don't like about Openbox (absence of a volume control icon in the taskbar, for one), but I'm always into tinkering, and I like the idea of switching themes. By that I mean switching wallpaper, icon themes, window themes, conky configs, everything, all with a keystroke. I've done it with scripts in the past, but that's "doing it the hard way," and I've been on the hunt for a desktop manager that has this feature.

Fedora Installation :: Live KDE CD Install : How To Select Boot From /dev/hda4

Feb 28, 2009

I was able to install Fedora 10 from the Live KDE CD, however I can't boot it.

I placed it on /dev/hda4 of an IDE disk, while on /dev/hda1 I have a RedHat 9 Linux, /home is on /dev/hda2 and the swap is on /dev/hda3. I'm not sure if RedHat 9 and Fedora 10 can coexist on the same HD.

There's an option in the Live KDE CD boot install, which allows one to select:

boot from hard disk:

Do you know what to type in in order to direct Fedora to boot from /dev/hda4 (who may be /dev/sda4 as seen by Fedora)?

P.S. For the time being, I want to forget about Grub or LILO and see if I can boot it this way first. I have LILO working, it boots Windows from a separate disk and RedHat 9 from /dev/hda1.

Fedora Installation :: 10 - Get To Select The Intel RAID Driver In The Install Process?

Jan 12, 2009

Installing new Intel server S5000VSA (Sapello) motherboard with RAID 1. Downloaded F10 32 bit DVD and run install. Everything works fine and select Samba and all that. Install completes but on reboot get a blank screen.

I know with Windows one has to load the RAID driver off the Intel driver CD, so guess that is the problem. But how do I do this in Fedora? Question: How do I get to select the Intel RAID driver in the install process? There does not seem to be any place to stop and make this selection. I tried selecting the Red Hat and Suze installs on the Intel configuration assistant but it then reboots and that is it. In Windows it would ask to insert the Intel driver CD but that does not happen. So I am stuck. I loaded Fedora some 3 year ago and like it but then it was not on a RAID setup. I created a VMWare install on my desktop and did the same install options and it works. So the DVD seems fine.

Fedora Installation :: Install Software Crashes Immediately After Select US English On First Screen

Mar 15, 2010

When I attempt to install the OS on my PC, the install software crashes immediately after I select US-English on the first screen. I'm copying the entire error report below. My system is configured as follows: Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard with 4G RAM. (FYI, I'm using the 32-bit LiveCD just because I may need a 32-bit OS for some purposes. I know this means I may not be able to use all of my RAM.) There are 3 500G hard drives connected to the computer. /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are RAID-1 mirrors via the on-motherboard ICH9R RAID chip. The logical partitions show up as /dev/dm-1, /dev/dm-2, /dev/dm-3, /dev/dm-4, and /dev/dm-5. When I type `fdisk -l`, I can see sda, sdb, and dm-* all separately. (I can provide the full output of `fdisk` if anybody wants to see it.)

/dev/sdc is a standalone drive without RAID.

I want to install Fedora on /dev/dm-2 with swap on /dev/dm-5. Currently, /dev/dm-1 and /dev/sdc2 each contain a separate installation of WinXP. I suspect the problem is with detecting RAID, thus I have deleted most of the error report that doesn't seem to concern storage detection.

Debian Multimedia :: Select Multiple Desktop Environment Using Startx?

Jan 25, 2011

I use Debian Squeeze and I have the following desktop environment installed: fluxbox, lxde, openbox and icewm. I make login in text mode and I start X using startx command manually in terminal. When I do that, fluxbox is loaded, because my ~/.xinitrc is configured this way:

#!/bin/sh
# fix dbus problem
eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
# start session
exec startfluxbox

[Code]...

And "%session" is the variable value (fluxbox/lxde/openbox/icewm) chosen during the graphical login. This script works with Slim, but I want to login in a non-graphical mode. Could I use this script somehow to do a non-graphical login using startx? Is there some way that I could run startx with some parameter that it would pass the "%session" value to .xinitrc?
