General :: Cousin Unplugged The Computer - Freezes And The Computer Reboots Over And Over

Apr 17, 2009

I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.

I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?

Ubuntu :: Grub Reboots Computer Before Starting OS?

Jun 12, 2011

This is a strange one. Ever since upgrading to 11.04 64-bit, I've had this problem and I've just been dealing with it...

After the machine posts, grub presents itself. Before upgrading, it would timeout after 5 seconds and boot the first/default entry. Since the upgrade, it no longer automatically boots the first entry. In addition, it reboots the computer after selecting the first entry. After it comes back up to grub, you select the first option and this time it boots.

I'm pulling my hair out on this one. I'm by no means a Linux expert, but I've been running Ubuntu for a few years now and this is one of the first issues that I've been unable to work through.

Ubuntu :: Suspend / Hibernate Instantly Reboots Computer?

Oct 25, 2010

A weird problem arose a few months ago in my box and has plagued me ever since: the PC immediately reboots whenever I try to suspend or hibernate Ubuntu. It's actually instantaneous, as if I pushed the reset button.Way more days into googling than I wished I had to, I have tried just about every solution related to suspension/hibernation problems,but none really applies to the exact situation I'm experiencing, since most are about being unable to resume after suspending/hibernating, and in my case it seems the system is instantly killed and therefore doesn't even start said operation.

After rebooting, applications behave exactly as when the PC is hard-reset, which I think is an indication that running processes aren't being properly terminated and the system is just going down abruptly (if the less-than-a-second it takes to go down and restart the boot sequence isn't obvious enough).Before you ask:

everything was working fine before;

upgraded to Maverick but the problem remained;

every suspend/hibernate method that I know of (GUI, CLI) does the same;

can't easily test in another OS since I only have Ubuntu installed (no dual-boot or the like);swap partition is larger than RAM; /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is pointing to the correct swap UUID;

tried several SUSPEND_METHODS and video-related options in /etc/default/acpi-support;

enabling/disabling the acpid and acpi_support services in BUM (Boot-Up Manager) has no effect;

enabling/disabling BIOS STR (Suspend-To-RAM)-related options has no effect;

unsetting NvAGP or setting it to 1 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf has no effect;

adding/removing the agpgart and intel_agp modules to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf has no effect;

installing the hibernate package has no effect;

not sure what I'd be looking for, but nothing strikes me as relevant in /var/log/messages.

This is really strange. May it be a hardware failure of some sort? What else can I try to work this one out or at the very least understand what's happening?

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Hangs During Update And After Reboots

Feb 25, 2011

I just installed Xubuntu 10.10. It indicated 202 updates, so I started to update and next thing I notice is that the computer is frozen on probably the screensaver. I reboot the computer by pressing the reset-button (ctl-alt-del doesn't work) and after reboot it flashes the update-tool processing a kernel-update. Then it flashes back to login screen and hangs. Another reboot I only get to login screen and it hangs. When booting into recovery mode, it hangs on

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Selected In Grub Reboots Computer?

Mar 5, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu, my first experience with Linux, but when I try to boot a previously installed Windows 7 from grub, it reboots the system back to the grub screen. I can boot to Ubuntu.

I've been searching for and working on possible solutions for several days to no avail. There are some similar posts on various forums but few quite like mine, and solutions I've read haven't solved my problem. I tried booting to the windows 7 repair disk and selecting the repair start up option, but the message tells me no problems were found.

General :: Computer Freezes For 2+ Seconds But Mouse Still Moves / What To Do?

Dec 10, 2010

I have this problem on my workstation. The computer would effectively freeze for 2-5 seconds for no apparent reason, then continue as normal. While frozen the mouse would still be movable, but only on one of screens in my multi-screen setup. What can be the likely cause.

System:

CPU: i7-920
Memory: 12G of Patriot DDR3, 6 modules
OS: SLED 11, Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop, using Gnome
Main board: Asus P6T
Video: two Nvidia 9500GT connected to three displays

I am using memory at recommended settings of 8-8-8-1333. It has an XMP profile. Th CPU is a bit overclocked to 3.3 GHz, but my cooling more than allows for it. I ran the computer with all overclocks off and lower memory speed but the issue was still there.

General :: Computer Freezes During Its Install From Live Cd / Sort This?

Jan 22, 2010

I'm new to the Linux scene. My school computer has linux and it works great, and I'm trying to get into programming, so I figured it'd be good to switch over to Linux (plus I just got a new computer, so it's a good time).

But, I don't know much about how to install it. I've burned a live cd from sourceforge (actually 2: the newest version and one older). I shut off the computer and put the cd in the drive, and then when I turn my computer back on I get the expected menu. I choose my language, and then it brings me to a screen with a few options: "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer", "Install Ubuntu", "Check disc for defects", "Test Memory", and "Boot from first hard disk" (plus some options at the bottom of the screen). I've tried every option on the menu, with both cds, but whenever I select anything, it freezes up right away. I've let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and nothing happens, so I'm pretty sure it's not me being impatient

I've also put the disc in while windows is running. When I double-click on my D-drive (in my computer) I get the error message "No cd detected, cannot run cd menu".

I'd be content running a different version of linux, I'd just like to have linux running (although I want it separate from Windows, I don't want Wubi). I'd like to be able to dual-boot, but I'd be willing to give up Windows entirely too. So, any ideas? Anything I can try? Oh, and I'm pretty inexperienced at this, so ask me if you need more details, and please respond in basic terms

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Loses Internet Connection And Requires Many Reboots To Re-connect

Sep 5, 2010

I am using Ubuntu Studio 10.04 LTS and I am experiencing the following problem: my computer loses its Internet connection and appears to require several reboots to re-establish an Internet connection.

As suggested on a similar post relating to wireless connection loss, I supply the output of sudo lshw -C network

*-network
description: Ethernet interface
product: NetLink BCM5789 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express
vendor: Broadcom Corporation

[Code].....

Note that I have REMOVED my wireless card in case there was some kind of hardware conflict or failure. I am using a wired connection through a Linksys WRT54G router that is supplying an Internet connection to another computer and an IP phone without any problem.

When I run the command network-admin (or select System > Administration > Network) I can see only 3 tabs (General, DNS and Hosts) It seems that the Connections tab has disappeared (and I believe this happened when I upgraded from Ubuntu 9/Karmic Koala). If I click Help it shows me that there should be 4 tabs, not 3.

The connection dropping began prior to my decision to upgrade. In fact it took several attempts to complete the upgrade. Should I attempt to re-install the upgrade? I am not sure how to do it without losing my connection. When I visit System > Administration > Update Manager, I am informed that my system is up to date.

Software :: Ubuntu 10.04 - VNC - When Computer Starts Up/reboots It Doesn't - Unlock The System Keyring

Nov 11, 2010

I've got a computer i'm trying to VNC to.

The problem is that when the computer starts up/reboots it doesn't "Unlock the system keyring"(I think that's what it said).

When I try and attempt to connect to the computer it asks for the VNC password(as per normal) but fails to connect after that.

The reason is that the Ubuntu computer prompts for the user's password to unlock the system(locally).

What I want is to be able to turn on the computer without having to worry about entering the password. I've had it running fine on 8.04 yet the newer version seems to be annoying :s

The system is set to automatically login on startup too.

I've tried this: "delete the keyring folder under /home/XXXX/.gnome2" then setup remote desktop again. But that hasn't worked either. I still have to enter the password to a keyring

General :: Error - Unknown Filesystem, Grub Rescue > - Computer Just Freezes

Jun 2, 2011

If I could I would change the boot order but I can't do that (I have a Dell Studio 1747). I try F2 to enter the BIOS set up, but I still end up with that error and never get to the setup. F12 doesn't work either (F12 is for the boot order) so I can't boot from the DVD with the Win7 installation DVD as the computer just freezes and I can't get past the Dell splash screen.

I have tried to remove the coin battery on the motherboard in an attempt to reset the BIOS but that didn't work either.

So...

F2 = error
F12 = freeze
Reset bios by removing coin size battery = no change

I assume there is no use reformatting the HD by attaching it to another computer and re-install Win7. Is it a motherboard problem?

General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer

Jun 28, 2011

I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

Software :: Access Computer A's Shares As Well As The Third Computer, The Aforementioned Computers Cannot Access Computer B

May 28, 2011

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.

Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.

What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.

What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

Ubuntu :: Computer Freezes After Several Hours?

May 29, 2011

I've a new Dell Precision T1500, Core i5, 8gb RAM, nvidia graphics card, that seems to freeze after some hours. I'm not sure how long exactly, more than two hours at least.

OS: Ubuntu 11.04
Cause: leave computer turned on, unattended for some time >2hrs.
Symptom: Screens are blank, no response to keyboard or mouse input, reboot is only way to rectify.

Things I've tried:Turn off screen saver

Disable "Sync to VBlank"
Disable screen power management, screen stays "on" always

So far none of these have corrected the issue. The screens are still on, but there is nothing displayed. Same thing did happen with Ubuntu 10.10, I'd hoped maybe 11.04 would fix it, alas, no.

Ubuntu :: Computer Consistently Randomly Freezes?

Apr 16, 2010

After 6 months or so I noticed my 9.10 install getting sluggish and it started to freeze habitually. I let it go until one day it consistently froze at the startup login screen. I installed 10.04 and the problem continued - After first installing it worked for about 6 hours without a crash, and then once again the problem developed into consistently freezing at the login screen.

I tested with some USB Live sessions and my live sessions never froze, even when active for a whole day. Remembering some I/O BAD SECTOR error messages from my 9.10 crash, I determined the error may be with the hard drive so I bought a new Hitachi SATA hdd (needed more GBs anyway). I installed 10.04 on the new hdd (H and after 6 hours again it crashed. When it crashes the screen freezes for about 3 seconds and then the graphics wildly split and it's just a jagged gray screen. However, as time has gone on over the past 2 days, the freezing situation has been better in that it hasn't come to the point where the computer consistently freezes on the login screen. The time before it freezes has varied from 10 minutes to 6 hours.

I think it's maybe a software issue with the nvidia drivers. I'm having trouble diagnosing this bug or providing information. I've included the output of lspci -vvv I have the nVidia GeForce Go 6100 graphics card

Ubuntu :: Computer Freezes When Opening Any Random App?

Jul 4, 2010

I installed Ubuntu Lucid on my computer a few weeks ago (fresh install, formatted). But recently I've been having some problems.

This is about the 4th time it happens. When I randomly open a program, sometimes the whole computer will just freeze. I can't change to a terminal window with Ctrl-Alt-F1,2,3,4 or anything. I can only press the Reset button on the computer case. This is frustrating because I already lost ALL my firefox settings and addons and I don't want anything like this to keep on happening.

The problem was: *drumroll* the POWER SOURCE.

Apparently the voltage was having little drops and this caused all the hardware to freeze. This caused the system operation to be WORSE after I bought the new graphics card (since it was bigger and needed more power). I bought a new powersource and installed it and it seems everything is alright now.

Ubuntu :: Computer Freezes Almost Daily - 11.04 Installed?

Jun 10, 2011

my wife's desktop has been freezing almost daily, leading to a reboot. It's an HP Pavilion (specs here) and it has Ubuntu 11.04 installed since soon after 11.04 came out. There doesn't seem to be really any rhyme or reason to the crashes, except that it might happen more often when she's web browsing with Firefox. I tried looking at /var/log/syslog, but to be honest I wasn't really sure what I was looking for. I did notice that syslog would stop recording at the same time the mouse and keyword freeze. Has any one seen this problem or be able to give me some advice on how to find out what's going on?
