Ubuntu :: USB Stick Into Desktop - Select "Try Ubuntu Without Making Changes To Computer"

Oct 2, 2010

I've successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop but I'm having trouble even trying it on my desktop. I tried making both a USB installer and a CD from the .iso image, but when I pop in the CD or insert the USB stick into my desktop and select "Try Ubuntu without making changes to this computer", it manages to get to the chime but nothing is displayed. Apparently the OS hangs up after that or there's a problem with the display. Does this mean Ubuntu will not run on my desktop? I have experienced this not only with Ubuntu 10.04, but other versions too, like Kubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 9.04. Laptop Specs : Acer Aspire 4520, AMD Turion X2 TL-58 (Dual Core 1.9GHz), 2GB DDR2-800, Nvidia 7000M GPU, Nvidia 610M chipset (?), WD 320GB mobile hard disk. Desktop Specs : AMD Phenom II X3 720, MSI 785GM-E65, 2GB DDR3-1333, ATI HD5670 1GB (Sapphire), Realtek ALC889 audio, WD 1TB Green Power HDD, two LG optical drives, TP-Link TL-WN781N PCIE Wifi-N adapter. Is there any way I can try Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop without making changes to it? FYI I've successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop using an ATI HD3200 GPU.

General :: How To Select A New Desktop Computer - GNU

Dec 15, 2010

How do you select a new desktop computer?... with insufficient knowledge about setting up GNU/Linux.

Previous attempts at explaining the answer to this haven't worked out yet !... so, for example, an iMac might solve all the tricky things as opposed to figuring out how to learn GNU/Linux that appears to be something for a more advanced computerist.

General :: Making Bootable Usb Stick For Clonezilla?

May 6, 2010

One of my computers is a netbook with no CD drive, so I need to create a bootable USB stick so I can reload a Clonezilla-made backup image from an external HD on to the netbook.I bought a 4Gb thumb drive and used Parted Magic to create a 200Mb partition on it. I formatted this and the remaining free space both as FAT32 and used Parted Magic to flag the small partition as bootable. Then I loaded the Clonezilla Live files onto this boot partition. Now the thumb drive boots up ok, but goes straight into a Parted Magic menu screen from which there is no way out! It's just the menu screen alone and has no PM functionality. This also happens on other systems where there is no PM installed or in the CD drive. So it must be something PM has done to the thumb drive.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Find A Way To Watch Videos From Main Desktop Computer On Another Computer?

Jul 9, 2011

I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.

What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

I can no longer select a session type at the login screen, and after logging in I just get a small terminal window in the top left of my screen while the rest is the background for the gnome login screen.

Slackware :: Intel Graphics / Vertical Lines From Xpdf/gv Under Xterm Stick To Xterm Window Making It Unreadable?

Jun 13, 2011

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.

The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.

On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

OpenSUSE Install :: Select Desktop In Grub ?

Dec 20, 2009

I have installed KDE as my desktop, I have managed to get XMBC working from KDE. At times it would be nice just have XMBC load automatically from boot up. I know that its possible to have XBMC load as the Desktop Enviroment.

Is it possible to have something like this setup for Grub?

1 - openSUSE - KDE (Default)
2 - openSUSE - KDE (SafeMode)
3 - openSUSE - XMBC
4 - Windows XP

If so is it also possible to get more fancy and have KDE goto a login screen and XMBC auto login?

Debian Multimedia :: Select Multiple Desktop Environment Using Startx?

Jan 25, 2011

I use Debian Squeeze and I have the following desktop environment installed: fluxbox, lxde, openbox and icewm. I make login in text mode and I start X using startx command manually in terminal. When I do that, fluxbox is loaded, because my ~/.xinitrc is configured this way:

#!/bin/sh
# fix dbus problem
eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
# start session
exec startfluxbox

[Code]...

And "%session" is the variable value (fluxbox/lxde/openbox/icewm) chosen during the graphical login. This script works with Slim, but I want to login in a non-graphical mode. Could I use this script somehow to do a non-graphical login using startx? Is there some way that I could run startx with some parameter that it would pass the "%session" value to .xinitrc?

Slackware :: Making Desktop Into A Functioning Web Server

Feb 26, 2011

I would like to try making my desktop into a functioning web server on the web, if this is possible. The plan is to have web pages attached to a database where data provided by the users will be stored and to have programs that will process this data to generate new pages or PDF reports. I plan to user FireBird as the database manager and build the front end with Lazarus, if possible. My desktop is a small Acer with a 1TB hard disk. At the moment it has 1 partition containing Windows 7 which I would like to keep, for now. My internet connection is a phone company supplied standard residential high speed. Here are my questions, if this idea is actually possible:How should I partition the disk or is a root and home partition OK? When I install Slackware, is there anything special that I must do? How do I actually let the web know that this server exists? Are there any Slackware specific sites where I can learn how to do this type of stuff?
