General :: Can't Select OS In Grub2

Jul 27, 2010

I generally use Slackware but I have also installed Ubuntu. Because of Ubuntu I have also Grub2 installed. My problem now is, that I have wireless keyboard and I am not able to select any OS in Grub2. But my wireless mouse and keyboard have full functionality in the OS itself.

Ubuntu :: Using Grub2 To Select Between 2 Different Raids?

Aug 7, 2010

I am currently running a system that has Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 running on separate raids. Here is an outline of my system.

Raid 1:
OS: Windows 7
Raid Controller: Intel ICH5R
Raid Type: 1 (Mirror)
# of Disks: 2
Disk Type: Sata HDDs

[Code]...

I would have liked to put both raids on the same controller but Windows XP/Vista/7 will sometimes throw up a blue screen when a single controller handles two independent raids. My setup prevents this issue. The good news is that I was able to get both of the raids up and running without much difficulty.

Right now I can only access my Ubuntu raid by going into the bios on startup and changing the boot order. Needless to say, this has become somewhat tiresome. It would be much simpler if I could use Grub2 to select between operating systems upon boot. While I know the process of installing Grub2 on a dual-booted system is relatively painless, I imagine my setup would be more complex.

Fedora :: Dual Booting - Grub2 To See F15 Or Be Installed Using Grub2?

Jul 11, 2011

I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.

Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

General :: Windows - Select OS Via Grub On Headless System?

Jul 20, 2010

I have a dual boot system (Linux and Windows) that I normally run headless and which boots by default into Linux (which is what I use mainly). This all works fine, except that on occasions when I want to boot Windows I have to plug in a keyboard and monitor just to select Windows in the initial grub boot screen. I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do this ? I don't mind if I have to boot Linux first, I just want to be able to reboot into Windows occasionally without having to plug in any peripherals.

General :: Networking - Can't Access Select Websites (but Can On Windows)?

Nov 21, 2010

My internet connection used to be a direct LAN connection to my provider. Back then, everything would load fine on both Windows and Ubuntu (dual boot). However, a while ago they started needing me to dial using a username and password (over a PPPoE connection). But since then, I haven't been able to browse certain websites on Ubuntu, even though there have been no such issues on Windows. Some example websites are - Ovi's sign in page (although share.ovi.com loads fine, and nokia.com loads fine), Live Mail (works on Chrome(ium) and Opera but not on Firefox (both 3.6 and 4)) and other random websites.

Some of the websites that don't load show timeout messages on Chrome and for some websites, the browser will keep trying to load without an end (I've left it like that even for hours but not noticed anything different happen).

I have tried changing the DNS servers to the ones suggested in the comment. I have even tried booting from a Fedora LiveCD and then changing the DNS to those (and even to the ones of OpenDNS), but the exact same thing happens. Here's output of ipconfig on Windows: Opera error messages seem to be a little more informative and they have the following errors in turns:

Secure connection: fatal error (552)
Secure connection: fatal error (40)

Followed by: Opera was not able to connect to the server. The server may be using the unsupported SSL 2 protocol, which is not considered safe enough for secure communication. The site owner should upgrade to TLS 1.0 or newer. Does anyone know why this is happening and how it can be fixed?

Update: Just saw here [URL].. that someone else was having similar problem and solved it by putting a NetworkManager.conf file in /etc/NetworkManager. What needs to be in that file?

General :: SSH - Forwarding Only Select Ports Make 1 Passthrough?

Dec 2, 2010

Right now I have a VPS that I tunnel through using SSH/Putty/Proxycap. I use it for a certain program which uses a certain port X for authentication, and a different port Y for its data. However, due to certain security protocols I need port X to be somewhat "transparent" so that the IP from the originator will be shown - whilst tunneling data through port Y. The conditions though, are that I cannot just change the X/Y port values in the application itself, these are company specific.

How would I go about doing this? Because right now, my understanding is that if Putty calls for a certain application to go through a socks server, ALL its ports will be directed at that. I want a certain port to be passthrough.

General :: Select Lines From FileA Based On A Key Field In FileB

Feb 11, 2011

I want to select lines from FileA based on a key field in FileB.

egrep does this nicely:
"egrep -w '0132874|0132880|0100765' < " FileA

Suppose FileB consists of three lines:

0132874
0132880
0100765

Is there a way to code egrep to do the selection? I really like code which does not use explicit loops so my interest is to find a grep or egrep or sed (or some other) command to perform this function.

Neither file is sorted on the key field but they could be. There is no requirement to keep the files in their present order. We may assume that each key value in each file is unique.

I want to load grub2 from grub4dos.I want to load directly the grub2 core. I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes). So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. But I think I have to edit --set-root
What I dont know is how.

In hdd 0,7 (sda8) I have Ubuntu 10.10 and /boot/grub/core.img is in sda8 (hd0.7)

I tried this way:

Code:

General :: How To Setup Grub2 With Xen

Aug 24, 2011

I am booting a new Xen kernel and it all goes fine up until some point during the boot process when the machine reboots without warning. Unfortunately, I don't see errors flash up just before that happens. Is there a way of booting the machine with a working kernel and looking at a log of the previous boot or something? What I didn't notice is that there is actually an error on the screen. It just flashes up very quickly before the reboot. The error is related to not being able to mount the root filesystem because there is something wrong with my grub configuration.

A normal entry in grub.cfg looks like this:
menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-33-server' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
recordfail
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,1)' .....

I added the following in /etc/grub.d/40_default
menuentry 'Xen 4 with Linux 2.6.32.45-xen' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os --class xen {
recordfail
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,1)' .....

But it's not working for some reason. I also tried the 20_linux_xen script. Unfortunately that's not working.

See these errors:
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.45-xen
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32.45-xen
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-33-server
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-33-server
/etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen: 57: uses_abstraction: not found
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.45-xen
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32.45-xen
/etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen: 156: gettext_printf: not found

Gettext is installed. I'm on ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The error flashed up on boot is something like "please insert a correct root=boot kernel option..." Why is this so hard and why are there so many different examples of grub2 xen? some put /boot in front some just /. I tried putting /boot in front but that didn't help. Also some have --set=root uuid and yet all my other working entries just have --set uuid. Is this something to do with a different grub2 version?
