Every once in a while I see a great deal (like this one) on a Dell Server. I was wondering if there was any problems running Ubuntu on one of these machines for use as a desktop computer? I don't know much about servers but the specs look similar to a desktop computer.

I have installed Ubuntu desktop on Ubuntu Server to get Boinc manager running. Now I want to remove Ubuntu-desktop.
Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.

It is connected directly to the internet and serves as a SNAT for other comps on the lan.I added "192.168.1.1 www_server_com" to the /etc/hosts on the server and also on the other machines on the LAN. All the other machines can open website without any problem.HOwever, the server itself only opens website if the address islhost. Internal IP, i.e. 192.168.1.1. gets a time out and so does www_server_com ( I cant use dots as I do not have more than 15 posts on the forum )Here is the firewall script I am using.

I have seen using DNAT to deal with the problem but it didn't work in my case (maybe I didn't do it correctly). I have spent whole evening/night trying to sort it out, it's 4AM now, going to bed frustrated and angry (at myself hahaha). Still like linux very much, won't be going to windows anymore. Please help

I'm curious, I believe that one of the ways that OSX make the GUI experience of *nix more 'snappy' was to ditch X and run the window manager more directly on the hardware.
If I'm looking to run Linux on a desktop, and have no interest in sending Windows to other machines on the network, can I run KDE or Gnome with no 'X' to eliminate that ever-so-slight lag with the window manager experience.
I guess basically what I'm asking is is there an equivalent of quartz for Linux?
I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.
I am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.
When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!
I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.
What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?
I have a computer set up running Ubuntu 10.04. It is being used as both a desktop computer with a mouse, keyboard, and monitor and users running GNOME sessions AND an ssh server for remote command-line access.
Now, when I am remotely accessing this machine via ssh, I see messages sent to me via "write" or "wall" without a problem, as do all other remotely logged in users. However, "writing" to a user or writing to a wall (for example about an upcoming reboot or downtime) does not affect users sitting at the actual computer in GNOME without a Terminal open. How can I get a message to these users, preferably using write and/or wall?
I have root access to this system.
The main problem is that the software was developed about 15 years ago and is incompatible with the most current version of Java. I would like to know how to install an older version of Java so that I can use it with just this one application, without changing the version of Java that I use for everything else.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy friends computer is extremely slow with all versions of kubuntu. Its very slow to boot, very slow to load applicatons, very slow to switch between windows, very slow to do anything. I can't think of what would be causing the slowness, its not new, doesn't have any fancy hardware AFAIK, but it runs XP perfectly well, its probably a 2.0+ghz pentium 4 processor. Do you think it could be a kernel chipset issue? Or perhaps a graphics driver/window manager issue? I don't know what the hardware is, is there a command I can run to list all the hardware?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have one laptop connected to my tv. It has all the videos on it. ther laptop(actually a netbook) that I have set up to do light browsing on. Both are running ubuntu 9.10. I would to be able to remotely control vlc running on the laptop connected to the tv from the netbook. I have been searching for a while and have found hints that this is possible, but everything either refers to streaming from one machine to another or doesn't give enough examples to figure it out. I have tried enabling the http interface, but I can't access this from another computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running into a problem with my cpu using a lot of usage with no applications running other than firefox, one window... then the screen would dim as if it is going to screen saver mode, which is not set to do that after 473 minutes of being idle...because I watch full length movies... so if anybody knows about this please let me know, i dont know if I have a virus, but maybe xscreensaver is conflicting with Gnome screensaver builds or something.

View 9 Replies View Relatedbeen trying to get a spare computer up and running with 10.10 server 64bit no dice so far, after hours of memchecks, disk checksums, re-burns and whatnot..install stops at 73% and does f. all.. tail log shows that it stops at updating sources, alt+f2 and ps aux shows apt-get update process running. if I kill this process, I can continue with the installation, but for this I need to repeat same process - killing all the apt instances that show up - so that it can complete the install. Unacceptable imho. computer is a AMD cpu based, athlon 2 435 on an ASUS M4A89TD PRO mainboard. ddr3 4gb crucial ram sticks. drives are functional S-ATA. No external GPU, so using IGP.
Tried installing without eth-cable plugged in, with it plugged in, with a usb install (that sorry excuse for an install was even worse, "please insert cd" midway) I know I can get the install going with desktop version.. But why would I want an xserver running on a headless computer. Kind of pissed atm, spent so many hours at this, figuring it just might be a faulty HW item. It isn't. using 10.10 desktop on my laptop and production pc - and been using 8.04 as main server, until now...
Edit: another one of them optiarc sony nec **** for brains dvd/cd-rom/writer it seems. add a check for this in future releases, with big bold letters "YOU ARE SCREWED, BUY NEW HARDWARE" printed as soon as the cd loads in these drives.. I've got better things to spend my time on than staring at a screen trying to figure out why it won't load properly
The problem does occur with both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. Whenever I watch a movie on Megavideo that uses flash, my computer runs so hot I can barely hold it and the video gets really choppy. It makes movies unbearable to watch. Either the fan isn't running at a high enough speed or maybe it needs to be replaced? please give me something...

My son would like to know why he can't install and use Shockwave flash on this computer which is running Ubuntu 10.10? I didn't have an explanation why it won't work in Linux yet.....Can someone shed light on this for me please? I think he just wants to play a few simple games on the miniclip website that require shockwave He now says he wants windows back and I want to avert thoughts of going back to those dreadful days.. I was doing some research on SSDs in wikipedia. Then it was showing me links to like DRAM and SRAM. Then there was RAM which I was familiar with. Anyways down to the point.The way your computer works is. When you start up your computer. Whatever is read on the hardrive is put on your RAM memory right.? For temporary and when you start applications. It is put in your RAM from your drive to run faster. This is why having ALOT of ram is useful for having your computer running smoothly. Right?

If I want to automatically fix errors in Fedora (or Ubuntu) on the next boot the normal method is to type [code] sudo touch /forcefsck at a terminal prompt. In Ubuntu after I boot it up I can see on my computer screen that fsck is running, but with Fedora there is no indication on the screen that fsck is running.
Since I can't see it, how do I know that Fedora is actually running fsck?

the message i got was idle unable to connect to cifs host will retry later. linux gave me two drivers and i have tried both previously, the print job seems to get lost in space.
This may sound stupid but I've got to ask. Can I connect multiple computers running Ubuntu & run software from one computer from the other? I know how to connect using SSH & to copy files back & forth but I don't know how or if I can share programs.

The power leg for that circuit cannot let the X10 communication reach most of the rest of the house. Where it does work, is from my office but there I am running XP computers only.
I would like to plug the CM11A into my XP computer, share it's serial port and have the home automation computer (running Heyu and Linux) use the LAN to get to the XP serial port without Heyu knowing it is not a local port. Has anyone done this? Can I share a serial port in XP? Can I get Linux to map a serial port to a virtual one on another machine?
My desktop computer that i dont use very often, that runs Windows XP, but im trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on it from an old CD i have but the drive wont work. It doesn't work with anything!
So heres what ive found: In my my computer area it shows that there is a "DVD/CD-RW Drive (D: )" and a "CD Drive (E: )" and when i click on the E drive it says to insert a disk into the drive and when i click on drive D it opens to a blank page. Also when i click eject on E nothing happens but when i click it on D the drive opens.
Ive already said this, but when i put a disc in it nothing happens. It doesnt matter what i put in it either, when i put something in the light saying its working blinks a few times then stops and nothing else happens.
I dont have any internet on the desktop. And ive been having this problem on & off since the computer was givin to me, but its never not worked for this long.
I just converted a movie from mp4 to avi format and was away from the computer during the conversion. When I came back, the file had been properly converted but the computer was at the login prompt. I assume that it rebooted when the conversion was complete. Is this normal behavior? I don't see any avconv 'switches' to prevent that from happening.
