two pcs with following ip add are there
pc1 - 10.1.1.1
pc2 - 10.9.16.1
I said to my friend that both can not talk to each other as it is,but have another NIC and give the ip in the range 10.9.16.2 then only we can use rsh/ssh to log into the pc2. Is it correct or is there a better way ?

Currently, I have to use ssh root@x.x.x.x to connect but would much rather be able to swap the IP for the computer name (like in Windows with \name) or a domain name (like computername.example.com).
EDIT 1 Completely forgot to mention that I am trying to connect from Windows 7 (via PuTTY) - sorry.
Right now I have a machine set up running Fedora. I have configured inittab to accept Console Logins, but I am having problems getting my netbook running PuTTY to connect. How would I go about finding the Host Name and Port to connect to?

sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart with a warning telling me to use the service utility. Not only that, but despite the port being open it won't allow me to log in, it just hangs, and I have local users enabled (I've used the default .conf file). Does dbus not come installed in 10.04, and if I did install it would it make a difference for restarting the service? Are there further steps needed not available in the tutorial on the Ubuntu Server Guide for 10.04 to enabling local user authentication? -edit- Figured it out, dbus wasn't installed, vsftpd is working fine now.
My wireless (Toshiba laptop, 10.04 64 bit) is just hanging when trying to connect. It was working fine but now nothing. My Wireless antennae is on and my other laptop can connect with no problems. I have restarted the router and the laptop twice.

I am using Squeeze and all appears OK at first... I have a DHCP lease, PING to router works, apache servering fine in and outside the network, Epiphany seems to connects to default debian.org only, BUT I cannot connect to any other websites and apt will not connect to any servers. I installed once, tried to fix problem, gave up and reinstalled and still have the same problem.
I unistalled Network Manager thinking that was the problem, but still the same issue. Is there a default firewall blocking certain connections or am I missing something I'm supposed to know about? I installed some non-free firmware in the beginning of install and all worked... and I connected fine when downloading packages during install.
I'm trying to setup PS3 media server on my new OpenSuse 11.2 and I'm being unable to connect to the PS3. The multimedia server seems to being working ok, only it has not appear on XMB.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup a dhcp server for my internal network. I have two NICs, a modem, and a wireless router. I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router. I will post my configuration files below with my current configuration.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter being fed up of all the problems I have had with Windows, I have just installed Mandrake Linux and everything seems OK apart from the fact that I can't connect to the internet. I presume it's because I have not got the relevant driver (or have not configured it if it's there) My machine was previously running Windows and all the disks I have are for Windows.
I have looked in my manual and it says I have a K8NBP GRAND (I think that's the motherboard, you'll see that I don't really know a lot!!) The manual also says Gigabit Ethernet LAN : NVIDIA Gigabit MAC + VITESSE Gigabit PHY - Supports 10/100/1000Base- T Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet. When I was running Windows I just had a network cable running out of the back of the PC connected to one of the LAN sockets on my router. I am currently having to use my wife's laptop (which runs on yet another OS but at least it connects to the internet or I'd be really stuffed).
I want to be able to connect to the dbus session bus on my box from another box. I've done this before on previous linux installs by adding

View 1 Replies View RelatedI suddenly cannot connect to the internet from work and at home with my laptop. Both ethernet and wireless won't work. I still get an IP address, and can also ping it, but cannot ping other addresses. What befuddles me that it happened today at work and at home, that it worked fine at both places before, and that I just connected to the internet yesterday at an airport. I have not installed any new programs, nor have we changed our internet provider etc. My girlfriend's laptop (Windows -- gnnn) still can connect to the internet without problems.

a friend of mine recently wiped my computer (windows XP) and installed Linux. The internet provider is Comcast cable. I have not ever had a problem connecting w/ windows XP but now I can't connect to the internet.I've spent hours on the phone w/ IT at Comcast and they tell me that I have connection to their modem and I also have a valid IP number. They seem to think that it could be something as simple as a setting, somewhere in the program and advised me to contact Linux for a solution. I am anxious to use Linux as my friends rave about the performance and all the 'bells & whistles' so the speak.
I have since, reinstalled windows XP (because I need to use the internet a lot, but can't get connected to the internet with it either.Again Comcast shows that I have connection to their modem and I have a valid IP address, but still can not connect to the internet. They seem to think that since all other variables remain constant except for the installing of Linux that the problem lies somewhere in that install.
Target server is under Kubuntu 10.04. Is there any method to connect using SSH session directly to an existing /dev/pts/X device? I need it, because an instance on User-Mode Linux virtual machine allocates it's TTYs as a set of /dev/pts/X devices in the host file system. As I understand, for futher interactions with the VM I need to connect to that devices.

Can ping both hostnames and IP address successfully but when trying to connect via browser or IRC, nothing happens (using name and IP). Ran netconfig and selected DHCP. Checked IP properties for VM-8 on Host OS and everything appears in order, and I have same IP address in the Guest OS. Can ping from Guest to Host and Host to Guest. Previously worked with XP as Host OS and I have a Windows 7 32bit VM which connects successfully.
I connect through ssh (putty) using a user authentication public key stored on the ssh server in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Permissions for ~ are 750. When I change them to 757 I can't connect anymore - connection by key is not accepted by server. How is this possible?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just finished installing Fedora 10 on my machine and I have it connected to the internet via ethernet cable. The problem is it wont connect at all for some reason.
I click on the green Activate button in network configuration to see if it does anything but I keep getting this AVC denial error. I don't even understand what the problem is:

So I play around in the settings and put this SELINUX thing to permissive but the thing still pops up, so it didn't help:

The only other thing I messed around with is the DNS server; I put two DNS servers in those boxes, and I got those from the people in charge so it shouldn't be wrong.
I had put my computer on standby and when i restarted it, it powered off within a few seconds. I turned it back on and after that i've lost connectivity to internet on Ubuntu 10.04.
However I have VMware (XP) installed and internet/network works on that. I'm a newbie with Linux.
