General :: Hard Drive Won't Spin Down Automatically Or Stay Spun Down When Requested

Sep 28, 2010

GNOME has an option "Spin down hard disks when possible"; is it ever possible? I'm using a netbook so I only have one drive and the operating system is on it. Is the operating system ever idle for more than a few seconds? If I spin down my SATA drive with sdparm it spins back up immediately. It's a 320GB 7200RPM drive; just wondering if I could save some battery life.

Debian Hardware :: External Hard Drive Does Not Spin Down?

Apr 12, 2014

I have a WD20EZRX (Green) 3.5" hard drive installed in an external USB3 case (Icy Box IB-351StU3S-B), which is detected as an AS2105 device in Debian 7 (Linux 3.13 from back ports). My computer is a TP X200s. The problem is that the hard drive does not spin down even with hdparm -S timeout set and the file system unmounted. It does spin down with the hdparm -y command, though, and stays that way until accessed. The case also seems to prevent the TP entering standby mode, or at least the indication light is left blinking when the lid is closed. Other than this, the drive works fine. It does have a GPT partition scheme and ext3 file system.

Note that the TP does have only USB2 ports.

They where watching a movie I had on it; anyhow I plugged it back in went to bed woke up and it took out its own partition on the external.

Ubuntu :: USB Hard Drive Doesn't Mount Automatically?

May 28, 2010

The other day a power outage affected an SSH server I have running 9.04 (32-bit desktop ed.). I have two external USB hard drives used for cron-scheduled backups (one for rsync, one for an incremental) that are connected at all times. When I reboot, they no longer mount automatically until I login to the gnome desktop. As far as I can remember, they always mounted automatically before as disk-1 and disk-2, but now I have to login to the gnome desktop and then log back out.

I never had them listed in the fstab before since they just worked, & hope to avoid doing it this way since the drives sometimes get their paths (sdd and sde) interchanged. However, is the best way to fix this to use UUIDs in fstab vs. using sde or sdd? (such as in this post: 4highlight=external+hard+drives+don't+mount+boot Or maybeust remembering incorrectly & ubuntu doesn't mount them automatically until login? Sometimes I have to reboot remotely, & this problem would cause the rsync to fill up my system drive.

Ubuntu Servers :: Second Hard Drive (sdb1) Is Not Automatically Mounted?

Mar 4, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit.

For some reason, the second hard drive (sdb1) is not automatically mounted:

rick@rab-1:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.0 GB, 499989348352 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60786 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000c17f6

[Code]....

Before I installed Ubuntu, I installed the RAID software to handle 4 500 GB hard drives - so there are supposed to be two mirrored drives. I'm not an expert in using RAID. I'm assuming it is correctly configured. I only "see" two drives. sda has Ubuntu etc. How can I get sdb1 mounted? I've tried using the palimpsest program but I'm afraid I screw it up. Do I need to re-format sdb1?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Automatically Going To Wrong Hard Drive?

Apr 18, 2010

I'm running into a weird problem when trying to install from the live CD I'm running. Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.

General :: Move Smaller Hard Drive To Partition On A Larger Hard Drive?

Mar 16, 2010

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.

Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

Ubuntu :: External Drive Won't Spin Up?

Jul 2, 2010

I come here as a technical PC user and fan of the Ubuntu forums ^^..I am the current owner of a Western Digital Portable HDD - Blue - 320 GB (Advertised).Recently, I have discovered I had bad sectors (Which were remapped I guess according to Ubuntu's Disk Utility-message that popped up in the upper right)... How is something I don't know because I have already had it replaced due to an internal busted USB port, and have taken really good care of it.Well, I right-clicked in My Computer on the drive (Windows XP) and ran Windows Error Checking on it. It took over a day and finally came up with a failure message. During the test, the drive made funky (yes, funky) noises and now is inaccessible. (It will NOT spin up, or show up as a drive in XP ANYWHERE (Including Device Manager) [but it does go into sleep mode o.0])

I do not have my files backed up, and this is so because this IS my backup =. (Or.. 'Temporary File Storage' for the critics out there.)I have access to WinXP, Vista, Ubuntu, Mac OSX, and Win7, and the bottom line is that I don't know what to do.. I bought it at Walmart (about $100) and also a replacement plan.. but the thing is, I'm not sure if it is dead, and whether or not I can somehow recover my files without disassembly..I'm thinking that maybe the Sata / USB internal interface is dead, but wouldn't putting it into another enclosure void the warrantee?Help? (I'm sorry in advance if this has been posted in the past... I would just like to know what I should do)I know this involves Windows, but from reading what I have, I have determined that this forum has more intelligent people than any other.

Debian :: Hard Drives Stay Active / Idle

Dec 28, 2015

I am trying to switch over my NAS from Win7 x64 to Debian 8.x Jessie. I have run into a few issues with the power management. When Idle my NAS should be consuming 25W, however it was consuming much more. The more hard disks I mounted, the higher the wattage.

I have followed a few tutorials but that has only been a partial succes.

Code: Select all # hdparm -C /dev/sd[b-y]

/dev/sdb:
 drive state is:  active/idle

/dev/sdc:
 drive state is:  active/idle

/dev/sdd:
 drive state is:  standby

/dev/sde:
 drive state is:  active/idle

/dev/sdf:
 drive state is:  standby

All the drives can spindown but they are not doing that now that they are mounted.

hdparm:
Code: Select all/dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG_HD103UJ_S13PJ9AQC12015 {
apm = 127
keep_features_over_reset = on
spindown_time = 60

[Code]....

Now there are two suggestions I found but both I was unable to implement.

The first suggestion was to mount using "noatime". However I do not know how to rewrite fstab because I am using ntfs for now (at least untill I get it working).

Code: Select all# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
#
/dev/mapper/bugattidebian--vg-root / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1

[Code] .....

Not sure where to add the noatime there...

Also I am using samba on all those drives. This guide suggested a code change but the example does not line up with my configuration script.

General :: Hard Drive Malfunctions When Other Hard Drives Are Connected?

Aug 23, 2010

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

General :: Automatically Set Write Permissions On Mounting A Usb Drive?

Aug 15, 2010

When I mount an external usb drive on linux (CentOs4), the permissions are by default set to read-only. Since there are multiple users on the computer who need to use the external drive, I want everybody to have rw permission for the entire drive. I also want them to be able to mount the drive if the computer has accidentially been shut down. They can use sudo mount to mount the drive, but this will only give them read permission, and I obviously don't want to allow sudo chmod.

Is there a default setting that I can change so that every new external usb disk automatically gets rw permissions?

General :: Mounting Windows Drive Automatically In Ubuntu?

Mar 16, 2011

I have dual boot on my laptop. First OS is Windows XP and second is Ubuntu 10.10.

When I click on places menu in Ubuntu, I can access Windowz XP Drives.

If I access some pdf file or document while in Ubuntu which is in Windows XP Drive, then it will come in Recent Document in Places menu.

Now I restart Ubuntu and click on Recent Documents and click on the document which I accessed in last session ( before restart ).

It says Unable to Open Document.

Then I click Places again and access my Windows XP drive. Then again I click Recent Document and click on document, I am able to open the document.

My guess is this happens because my windows drives are not mounted automatically when I start Ubuntu. How can I mount Windows drive automatically when I start Ubuntu.
