I have external USB hard drive of 320GB(seagate sata).It works fine but, it unmount automatically after some time.In windows it works fine without any problem. also I unplug USB cable & plug it again to mount it is there any other way of mounting it after it gets unmounted.

I formatted the USB flash drive using Karmic's Format Disk utility (right-click on a volume, select "Format..."), and selected "Encrypted, compatible with Linux (FAT)" from the "Type" drop-down menu.It mounts correctly when I plug it in, and I can access the files just fine.When I unplug the Flash drive without using the 'Safely Remove Drive' option, the icon on my desktop changes its name to '2.0 GB Encrypted', instead of disappearing and unmounting like my unencrypted Flash drives do.
I would like to have encrypted Flash drive treated in the same way as my unencrypted Flash drives, which disappear and unmount when unplugged, even if the 'Remove Safely' menu option isn't used. What can I do to accomplish this?NOTES:When I plug the encrypted Flash drive in, the following line shows up in the output of 'mount'. 'secure' is the name I gave the disk during the format process:

I have an external hard drive which connects to a usb port. until recently i could unmount it by right clicking on the desktop icon and selecting unmount. now when i try that it tells me that i can't because the device is not in fstab and i am not the root. i checked mtab and it had this line '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' i changed that to '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' thinking that would fix it, but it didn't. i unmounted using 'sudo umount /media/usb0' and restarted my computer and now the line in mtab reads '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 vfat rw,noexec,nodev,sync,noatime,nodiratime 0 0' and i still can't unmount without using the sudo umount command. i also tried adding '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' to fstab and that didn't help

I suspect there are some options for this, so I looked into the Power Management section, but found nothing that can solve the problem.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Seagate Freeagent Go 500GB external hard drive that I use for backup. I wanted to resize the partition so I used GParted to shrink the 500GB NTFS partition to 400GB. The other 100 I wanted to encrypt and use for some other more important files. For some reason, the shrink failed and I disconnected the hard drive and reconnected it. I didn't see the icon appear on the desktop. I went into the Disk Utility to discover that GParted's shrink error deleted all of the partitions on my hard drive. So I created a new 400GB NTFS partition and put back all of my files. The other 100 is unallocated currently.
It will normally mount automatically and show up on the desktop but the hard drive won't mount without me going into the Disk Utility and mounting it through there. I can't even mount it from the Terminal with root privileges. It gives me this:

Now, I can unmount with root privileges and I can unmount it from the Disk Utility. I can browse and edit the files within. But I can't unmount it from within Nautilus or on the desktop (the Safely Remove Drive option is not there).
The new 400GB partition also isn't detected by GParted. It just shows the whole drive as unallocated.
I am trying to mount an external USB hard drive. I'm using Debian Lenny 5. I tried to right-click on the hard drive and then select the mount command inside the gnome desktop environment but it gives me an error. Is there an easy way to mount and unmount this hard drive? The hard drive itself is formatted from the factory in NTFS. I'm going to leave it in this file format is a need to use it with Windows machines as well.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been running Linux for a year on our family computers (one desktop, one laptop and two netbooks). I've run into a problem with the encrypted ext4 partition (270GB) on a LaCie external hard drive which also has a NTFS partition (50GB) which is not encrypted . First two times I tried using the encrypted ext4 partition (from two different computers) it worked fine but now I can't access it at all. I can still access the NTFS partition.Encrypted external hard drive partition will unlock but won't mount (or unmount). The computer says "Opening 320GB Hard Disk" but after a minute says, "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"Disk utility (GUI for gparted I believe) states that the encrypted partition (/dev/sdb1) is unlocked and the underlying partition (/dev/dm-0) is not mounted but it has a "busy circle sign" on it that will not turn off. The NTFS partition on the same drive mounts and accesses normally.
But if I try to unmount the NTFS partition, it says: "Unable to stop drive. One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb"If I try to shut down the computer, it is unable to shut down because (I assume) it can't shut down that drive either. So I have to just turn off the computer.fdisk states that /dev/dm-0 doesn't have a valid partition table [full output attached]fsck suggests: "Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"ps axuf shows some processes running on /dev/dm-0 but killinghem doesn't release the drive either. [full output attached]I checked /etc/blkid.tab (suggested in one vaguely related thread) and there's no actual file only a broken link pointing to /dev/.blkid.tab (which doesn't exist). I tried deleting this link and rebooting but that didn't change anything.when I finally gave up my data as lost, I tried to format the partition (using Disk Utility) and it refused saying, "One or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb"
The other day a power outage affected an SSH server I have running 9.04 (32-bit desktop ed.). I have two external USB hard drives used for cron-scheduled backups (one for rsync, one for an incremental) that are connected at all times. When I reboot, they no longer mount automatically until I login to the gnome desktop. As far as I can remember, they always mounted automatically before as disk-1 and disk-2, but now I have to login to the gnome desktop and then log back out.
I never had them listed in the fstab before since they just worked, & hope to avoid doing it this way since the drives sometimes get their paths (sdd and sde) interchanged. However, is the best way to fix this to use UUIDs in fstab vs. using sde or sdd? (such as in this post: 4highlight=external+hard+drives+don't+mount+boot Or maybeust remembering incorrectly & ubuntu doesn't mount them automatically until login? Sometimes I have to reboot remotely, & this problem would cause the rsync to fill up my system drive.
I have two 1TB HDD's formatted in NTFS, one has windows and other stuff i use even on linux and the other is all media. i can mount them easy, but this is a minor annoyance because everytime i log in i must type in my password. is there no way to have them auto mounted on startup?

Before I installed Ubuntu, I installed the RAID software to handle 4 500 GB hard drives - so there are supposed to be two mirrored drives. I'm not an expert in using RAID. I'm assuming it is correctly configured. I only "see" two drives. sda has Ubuntu etc. How can I get sdb1 mounted? I've tried using the palimpsest program but I'm afraid I screw it up. Do I need to re-format sdb1?
I'm running into a weird problem when trying to install from the live CD I'm running. Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.

GNOME has an option "Spin down hard disks when possible"; is it ever possible? I'm using a netbook so I only have one drive and the operating system is on it. Is the operating system ever idle for more than a few seconds? If I spin down my SATA drive with sdparm it spins back up immediately. It's a 320GB 7200RPM drive; just wondering if I could save some battery life.

Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I started up using the "try before installing" option and when I try to install in full it says I do not have 2.5 free gb's for the install. So I open up gparted only to find that only drive there is my 2bg usb key and I have no idea how to find my main hard drive.
I tried searching and tried the following; I checked the sata setting in the boot menu and it is IDE. The computer has also never been used in a raid setup.
What happens on my computer is this: when I insert my Walletex business card-shaped pendrive into any USB port, everything works fine, and so does unmounting using the right-click "Eject" option.However, when I try to unmount the device using the other context menu option, "Remove device safely" (or something like that; sorry, I'm using a localized version of GNOME), it does unmount it, but then mounts it right back on. The weird thing is that after it does it, if you try using that same unmount option again ("Remove safely"), it actually works! And I can replicate this issue every time: the "Eject" context menu option works the first time every time I try it, but the "Remove safely" one, when used for the first time per device insertion causes an unmount and then a re-mount, and works the second time you try it
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Karmic on my laptop, and I have three 1.5 TB external hard drives which I swap between frequently. My problem is that if I leave the drives in, and do not access them for a period of time, they become inaccessible, i.e. I will click on the icon on the desktop or in Places, and it will tell me there is no device mounted, even though I was using it fine just an hour before.
i have a feeling that it is because the USB drives spin down after a period, and Ubuntu detects them as being 'disconnected'. Would it help if I added individual entries for each in fstab?? Or do I need to adjust some settings elsewhere?
EDIT: If this information helps, the HD's are all Seagate Expansion drives, formatted to ext4.
This isn't a problem with the 2.6.26 kernel that I have been using, but it is with newer ones. I want to upgrade to a backports kernel, because there has been a REALLY long standing 2.6.26 bug with cpu frequency governors and suspending that is never going to get fixed.
Basically, with the 2.6.30 backports kernel, the hard drive spindown time is way too short. I'd like it to spin down after a minute or two of inactivity, but it is spinning down after only 5-10 seconds. Is there any way to fix this? edit: Now that I think about it, this is also a problem on another laptop that runs squeeze.
My hard drive all of a sudden starts to read and write all on its own for around 15 seconds at a time while at idle or while I am just browsing the net. At first I thought it was from cron running but I have that disabled.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am going nuts because this should a simple thing and for some reason it's not. 1. I'm just trying to use NTP to set the time automatically. I've done numerous installs and had it work fine. However for my Fedora 11 box and this Fedora 13 box, it's not working. I'm getting a vague error "unable to connect to server." Which could mean anything. As near as I can tell, it should be simple:
a. Select to use NTP.
b. Adjust the local firewall to allow connections at 123 (ntp)
c. If necessary, adjust the router settings for port 123.
I have tried sending port 123 traffic directly to my Fedora 13 machine, but same error. I've tried using other choices of ntp server (like the North America pool). No dice. I've had two separate routers, first a Dlink and now a Cisco. Same problem. I've checked the SELinux logs for errors but didn't notice anything obvious (that doesn't mean much -- I'm not much of an SELinux guru). I've set up Fedora 14 at work and it connected just fine. Didn't have to open anything other than the local port on the Fedora firewall. No network/router adjustments needed.
It's not a giant thing but it's driving me nuts. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Particularly big obvious things that maybe I've overlooked? Does some other setting override this NTP time? Does using this require use of GMT? Something like that?
The hard drive is accessed every few seconds with OpenSUSE and when it is there is a click sound when it is first accessed. I have other distros which dont make the clicking sound when they access the hard drive. I need to prevent opensuse from making the click sound when it does whatever it's doing. Im not even sure what it's doing or what settings to change, and most importantly how do i make it not click? Maybe i could copy settings over from another distro if i knew which settings to replace.
