Ubuntu Servers :: Second Hard Drive (sdb1) Is Not Automatically Mounted?
Mar 4, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit.
For some reason, the second hard drive (sdb1) is not automatically mounted:

Before I installed Ubuntu, I installed the RAID software to handle 4 500 GB hard drives - so there are supposed to be two mirrored drives. I'm not an expert in using RAID. I'm assuming it is correctly configured. I only "see" two drives. sda has Ubuntu etc. How can I get sdb1 mounted? I've tried using the palimpsest program but I'm afraid I screw it up. Do I need to re-format sdb1?

Apr 18, 2010I'm running into a weird problem when trying to install from the live CD I'm running. Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.

I have a "not good" habit: I'd love to upgrade whatever suggested by Ubuntu upgrading center every morning.
However, after upgrading some packages for today, my computer won't be able to automatically mount external harddrives, including file systems ext4 and ntfs.
My question is:
1) How can I check what packages have been upgraded just within today?
2) How to make my Ubuntu be able to automatically mount external hard drives whenever I plug in a harddrive as before?
Hardware :: USB Drive Not Getting Automatically Mounted During Startup
May 7, 2010I added a 1TB USB drive to a Red Hat 5.3 system. I added the following line to the /etc/fstab to automount the drive at startup.If I manually the mount the drive (mount /mnt/external), I can access and read/write to the external USB drive without any issues. My problem is that during the startup process after a reboot, the drive is not being mounted automatically.

May 1, 2010Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

May 8, 2010I just got ubuntu installed for the first time, I tried mounting my hard drive to my desktop so i can have easy access to it, but when i restart ubuntu it always dissapears and i have to go to places then click on the hard drive again to mount it to my desktop.
Is there a way of keeping this on the desktop without having to do this all the time? I have the latest ubuntu version.

Dec 22, 2010What happens when you wipe a hard drive which has a partition that is mounted? I was using ubuntu 9.10 live CD but I had one partition on a hard drive mounted. Then, I started to wipe the entire hard drive with random characters using dd. Only later I realized that I hadn't unmounted that partition. what could have happened? Could the Live CD have been damaged?

General :: Cannot Use GUI To Open/list A Mounted Hard Drive
Jun 12, 2011My version of linux has a bunch of GUI icons on the left hand side of the screen (vertical). Most are links to programs.You click the GUI icon and the program opens. When I mount my internal hard drive it adds a GUI icon for the drive. The problem is when I click on this new GUI icon it automatically loads K3b and gives an error message instead of giving me a list of what is on my drive. I deleted the program K3b and tried un-mounting then re-mounting the drive. I then tried the new GUI icon for the drive and now it automatically opens Dragon Player.

Aug 12, 2010Hard drive is connected to my Inspiron 1525 via USB, plugged in and I'm not seeing the new drive mounted. Restart doesn't fix things and manually trying to mount /dev/sdb1 doesn't work either. The drive I got is preformatted as NTFS and I've been using a logical partition formatted as NTFS as a sort of share drive between my Windows partition and Ubuntu partition, so I know I have NTFS set up properly. This is the hard drive I'm working with for reference.

May 28, 2010The other day a power outage affected an SSH server I have running 9.04 (32-bit desktop ed.). I have two external USB hard drives used for cron-scheduled backups (one for rsync, one for an incremental) that are connected at all times. When I reboot, they no longer mount automatically until I login to the gnome desktop. As far as I can remember, they always mounted automatically before as disk-1 and disk-2, but now I have to login to the gnome desktop and then log back out.
I never had them listed in the fstab before since they just worked, & hope to avoid doing it this way since the drives sometimes get their paths (sdd and sde) interchanged. However, is the best way to fix this to use UUIDs in fstab vs. using sde or sdd? (such as in this post: 4highlight=external+hard+drives+don't+mount+boot Or maybeust remembering incorrectly & ubuntu doesn't mount them automatically until login? Sometimes I have to reboot remotely, & this problem would cause the rsync to fill up my system drive.

Jun 23, 2009I've been trying to get Fedora 11 (x86_64, netinst) installed on my machine, but am having trouble with the hard drive selection and partitioning. This machine has 2 x 320GB hard drives. One for Windows, and one for Linux of course.
When I first tried the install, both hard drives were attached to the computer. I was expecting to see the drives seperately so that I could partition and install on only one of the drives, but device mapper kicked in and showed me a single 640GB long partition. Not very helpful in my case.
I decided to simply unplug the Windows drive so that fedora didn't see the two identical drives and so would not try to map them. However, with only the linux drive plugged in, the installer doesn't see it. There are no hard drives to select from in the installer.
As a test, I plugged in the windows drive solely and unplugged the linux drive, and low-and-behold, fedora sees the windows drive. This is getting slightly confusing at this point as both the hard drives are identical. I can't see why the installer would recognise one but not the other. Yet it recognises the extra 320GB of hard drive space if both drives are plugged in and device mapper tries to raid them. I tried the debian installer to see if it had the same problem, but it was able to see and install on this drive. I would have tried OpenSUSE as well but this computer doesn't have a DVD drive.
I haven't tried a "nodmraid" boot option yet, so I am going to try that tonight, but I'm interested to hear what the community thinks of this problem.
System Specs:

Intel Q6600
Corsair XMS2-800 2x2GB
2 x Seagate Barracuda 320GB
I've also had a 640GB plugged in that was detected fine (probably because dm didn't try to raid it being the odd hdd out) but has been removed while I'm troubleshooting the fedora install.
Fedora Installation :: F10 Does Not Recognize Second Hard Drive
Apr 1, 2009There are 3 IDE drives in this box.
hda has Debian Lenny installed (with swap) and is to remain.
hdb1 has a linux distro on it.
hdb2 is a data partition and is to remain.
No other partitions on hdb.
HDD is data only (not really relevant but mentioned for completeness)
The system boots via Grub from MBR on hda.
I'm trying to install F10-i686-KDE-LiveCD on hdb1 but F10 won't allow it without modifying the partition tables which will, of course, wipe my data on hdb2. hdb seems to be a happy disk; e2fsck shows it clean and both partitions open properly in Konqueror within the LliveCD.

What I would like to do is:- install Open Suse on the same drive, sharing the same swap, boot section but splitting or resizing the home partition, can this be done? I installed Fedora by booting up from a disc, plugging in my usb hard drive and then installing to that. Would I follow the same procedure for my 2nd installation, I think so but am open to correction. My laptop bios supports booting from disc and I have some 204 gig of free home space.

Apr 7, 2009I am upgrading my old 40G hard drive to a new 160G one and want to know the best way to set it for use with my system. I currently have a Windows partition which I want to keep & reinstate onto the new drive. Then I want to have another 3 partitions for different distros.
What should I do as a first step when I put the drive in boot off a live CD. I am assuming that I will need to do. If I do a, # grub-install, will this then format the MBR and then create a small partition for /boot. Following that, do I just restore the Windows partition immediately after the /boot partition, and then create new partitions for the distros accordingly.
I would also like to create a seperate swap partition and then install F10. Is there an option in Anaconda to not use LVM (can't remember).
Fedora Installation :: FC4 - Installer Does Not Recognize Hard Drive
Apr 18, 2009I have this laptop that I just reformatted in hopes of doing a dual boot between XP and FC4. It is an Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (the Wal-Mart special). I reformatted the drive; the Windows partition is in NTFS and then I have a 10GB partition in FAT32 for Linux. When I try to install FC4, the disk boots into the installer, then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drives (the disk in this laptop is a Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00). It asks me if I want to load any drivers, and I tried a few and still no success. Any way, after it goes through that, it tries to start anaconda and after that launches it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. So, did I do anything wrong in the Windows install that won't allow the disk to be found? The XP disk only allows a format in NTFS, otherwise I would have done FAT32 on the whole drive. Second, is the anaconda problem something related to the HDD issue, or does anyone think that it may be a separate issue?

Jun 11, 2009I'm reasonably noob to Linux but now seriously confused Installing F11 onto a Dell Precision 490, 4GB RAM and 250GB WD2500YS. I get through to drive partitioning and there is no drive listed. Especially odd as the drive is running F10 quite happily. Reconnect a Seagate Barracuda 500GB and restart, this is seen and is the only drive listed even though it is SATA1 not SATA0. Boot the F10 installation DVD and that recognises both drives! I have tried both AHCI and ATA modes with the same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction or do I go out and get another Seagate drive, no I can't use the existing one.
