Ubuntu Servers :: Second Hard Drive (sdb1) Is Not Automatically Mounted?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit.
For some reason, the second hard drive (sdb1) is not automatically mounted:

Before I installed Ubuntu, I installed the RAID software to handle 4 500 GB hard drives - so there are supposed to be two mirrored drives. I'm not an expert in using RAID. I'm assuming it is correctly configured. I only "see" two drives. sda has Ubuntu etc. How can I get sdb1 mounted? I've tried using the palimpsest program but I'm afraid I screw it up. Do I need to re-format sdb1?

I selected the option to have my second hard drive automatically mounted during installation, and now I would like to undo that.

The external hard drive which contains all my photos and where I backed-up all my important documents is no longer recognized. It is a three month old 500GB Iomage Prestige Desktop Hard Drive.When I plug it in, it is recognised as a USB device, because it shows up when I type lsusb, but dmesg gives this error message.

I popped the disk out of the casing put it on a SATA connect internally and then tried the file recovery programs testdisk/photorec and SpinRite, but both failed because they couldn't recognize the external hard disk.

External hard drives won't be automatically mounted after upgrading some packages...
I have a "not good" habit: I'd love to upgrade whatever suggested by Ubuntu upgrading center every morning.
However, after upgrading some packages for today, my computer won't be able to automatically mount external harddrives, including file systems ext4 and ntfs.
My question is:
1) How can I check what packages have been upgraded just within today?
2) How to make my Ubuntu be able to automatically mount external hard drives whenever I plug in a harddrive as before?

I added a 1TB USB drive to a Red Hat 5.3 system. I added the following line to the /etc/fstab to automount the drive at startup.If I manually the mount the drive (mount /mnt/external), I can access and read/write to the external USB drive without any issues. My problem is that during the startup process after a reboot, the drive is not being mounted automatically.

I just got ubuntu installed for the first time, I tried mounting my hard drive to my desktop so i can have easy access to it, but when i restart ubuntu it always dissapears and i have to go to places then click on the hard drive again to mount it to my desktop.
Is there a way of keeping this on the desktop without having to do this all the time? I have the latest ubuntu version.

What happens when you wipe a hard drive which has a partition that is mounted? I was using ubuntu 9.10 live CD but I had one partition on a hard drive mounted. Then, I started to wipe the entire hard drive with random characters using dd. Only later I realized that I hadn't unmounted that partition. what could have happened? Could the Live CD have been damaged?

Hard drive is connected to my Inspiron 1525 via USB, plugged in and I'm not seeing the new drive mounted. Restart doesn't fix things and manually trying to mount /dev/sdb1 doesn't work either. The drive I got is preformatted as NTFS and I've been using a logical partition formatted as NTFS as a sort of share drive between my Windows partition and Ubuntu partition, so I know I have NTFS set up properly. This is the hard drive I'm working with for reference.

I administer a remote server via SSH that runs CentOS 5.5. I have been unsuccessful in all my attempts to write to two different external USB hard drives with a single ext3 partition when logged in as root.
When attempting to create a "test" directory I get one of two messages:

Not putting stock in the odds that I've had two hard drives (different sizes and brands) with the exact same hardware problem, I'm going to assume this is a software issue, although maybe it isn't. My version of linux has a bunch of GUI icons on the left hand side of the screen (vertical). Most are links to programs.You click the GUI icon and the program opens. When I mount my internal hard drive it adds a GUI icon for the drive. The problem is when I click on this new GUI icon it automatically loads K3b and gives an error message instead of giving me a list of what is on my drive. I deleted the program K3b and tried un-mounting then re-mounting the drive. I then tried the new GUI icon for the drive and now it automatically opens Dragon Player.

The other day a power outage affected an SSH server I have running 9.04 (32-bit desktop ed.). I have two external USB hard drives used for cron-scheduled backups (one for rsync, one for an incremental) that are connected at all times. When I reboot, they no longer mount automatically until I login to the gnome desktop. As far as I can remember, they always mounted automatically before as disk-1 and disk-2, but now I have to login to the gnome desktop and then log back out.
I never had them listed in the fstab before since they just worked, & hope to avoid doing it this way since the drives sometimes get their paths (sdd and sde) interchanged. However, is the best way to fix this to use UUIDs in fstab vs. using sde or sdd? (such as in this post: 4highlight=external+hard+drives+don't+mount+boot Or maybeust remembering incorrectly & ubuntu doesn't mount them automatically until login? Sometimes I have to reboot remotely, & this problem would cause the rsync to fill up my system drive.

I have two 1TB HDD's formatted in NTFS, one has windows and other stuff i use even on linux and the other is all media. i can mount them easy, but this is a minor annoyance because everytime i log in i must type in my password. is there no way to have them auto mounted on startup?

I am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS with Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic-pae I was originally using usbmount to autmont the western digital external usb drive I had attached to the system and it was working great. However, while I was adding files to the drive i deleted all of the directories and files that came on the drive out of box such as 'autorun.inf' and an autorun directory containing an icon for the drive.. when I rebooted the drive was no longer mounted, I tried to un/reinstall usbmount a few times but it still didnt work, so I wound up adding the drive into my fstab, my fstab line reads like this

I'm running into a weird problem when trying to install from the live CD I'm running. Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.

GNOME has an option "Spin down hard disks when possible"; is it ever possible? I'm using a netbook so I only have one drive and the operating system is on it. Is the operating system ever idle for more than a few seconds? If I spin down my SATA drive with sdparm it spins back up immediately. It's a 320GB 7200RPM drive; just wondering if I could save some battery life.

have set up a server with OS on a 250GB disk (sdd) and 3x 1.5TB drives for a RAID5 storage setup (sda, sdb and sdc).Using webmin I can delete and create a primary partition in each one. But while I can also format sda and sdc, it refuses to do sdb for some reason:Executing command mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdb1 ; partprobe ..mke2fs 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010)
/dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!
But I'm not using it

I've recently moved from Fedora 7 to Ubuntu Server 9.10. This server has been in operation for quite a few years, and currently has two 110 GB IDE hard drives in one volume group...I think they are both mounted at /.
What I want to do is the following:
1. Have the system files on the IDE volume group of /
2. Add a 2TB SATA drive, mounting at at /var/www/ I also want this partition to be extendable, if I want to add a second 2 TB SATA drive, to be "Volumed"?? with this one
3. Add another IDE HDD, mounting at /var/log
I remember I used (I think it was GParted...a GUI when I added the second IDE drive a couple years ago), but now I'm in a Terminal-only world. After I install the hard drives, what process would I need to follow to accomplish my above listed tasks?

I've been having some problems w/ a my RAID 5 array, and after extensive investigation, I'm fairly sure that my last resort is rebuilding the array. I'd tried --assemble, b/c it's a previously created array, but it didn't seem to like that. So, I checked into --create, and it will re-create the array w/out destroying the data, if the superblocks are persistent, which they seem to be. However, here's what I get:

I need some help on this one. I added an second internal hard drive to my file server, a 500GB WD. I want to use this drive as the primary storage drive for my file server, and I want to format it with XFS. I've found some guides showing me how to add hard drives, but they didn't really fit what I want to do. When I run fdisk -l this is what I get

I have Ubuntu 10.10 running on a HP Proliant DL380. The Server has 1 SCSI disk install which runs the Ubuntu OS. I recently added a new SCSI drive to the system (hot swap)
Run fdisk -ls
But it does not show the device.
I've also run

which returned

0 device(s) removed.
I've have 4 other scsi bays which have the same result. I need to be able to see the drive before I can even mount/format.

I'm learning with a local intranet server with Ubuntu Server 10.04. It works well:^) I have a back-up question: I want to buy a hard drive of some kind to back-up to. I imagine a USB Portable Hard Drive would work OK. I'd plug it in to the box and mount it and then run a back-up routine. Is a workable way to do it?

Have just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a dell with a perc 700 raid card. Running a mirrored raid1 (2x 500G as one drive). All went well. Have installed a basic Gnome front end and Webmin. I want to partition the hard drive into system and data storage areas. What is the best way to do this with a mirrored RAID system?

I have attached a 1.5 TB external hard drive to my new Ubuntu server. I mount it in /media/external. I used sudo mount /dev/sdx# /media/external but sdx# keeps changing. I added a line to fstab to mount it permanently but after couple of our it unmounts itself and /media/external is empty. It is in vfat format but webmin shows it as ntfs.
