I have been running Ubuntu as my sole OS for about a month now, and aside from Computer Janitor, I have found no drive/fs cleaning tools, or defragging tools. I know this isn't Windoze, but surely there must be a way of maintaining your hard disk. I mean installs/uninstalls must leave detritus, and file moving must cause SOME fragmentation. Are there any apps, systems or methods in place that provide this functionality?
View 3 RepliesI had a hard disk used entirely for data archiving (no os files in there!) and it just failed, so I opened up the PC case and removed it. The problem is that I had set it to be automounted on startup (specified in /etc/fstab), and now when Fedora is loading it outputs an fsck error "cannot find/locate a superblock in /dev/sdb1" (that is the removed drive) and it throws me to a "maintenance terminal". I tried to remove the /dev/sdb1 entry from /etc/fstab, but the system wouldn't let me save the new file because the filesystem was in read-only mode.

But what are possible disadvantages or limitaions if you don't use a partition (e.g. if you want to use the complete space as one volume for data mining or so)?

I notice when Linux boots in maintenance mode the filesystem is read-only.
Is there a way to change this, perhaps remounting as writable?
An example of this being a problem is that I was unable to open vi because there were too many session files....
Not to mention it would be nice to actually fix problems....
What are you meant to be able to do if you can't make any changes to the filesystem? What kind of maintenance can be expected?
I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

The problem I faced is that I could not copy file into the hard disk even I was in root user. It prompted me that it is only read-only. I just wonder why.I have tested with my thumb drive. It worked. By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
How can a directory mount the hard drive? How can a list of files sitting on a hard drive that is not in RAM run your computer and then mount the physical device that stores the code that it is running? Obviously the CPU can access the hard drive before this so how does this massive abstraction make physical sense?I'm thinking that if this is abstracted to this extent so is the "/.../.../" path nomenclature as well. Is this just to change directories and or an environmental variable? Is the file really farther the more slashes that are in it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedInformation on the net seems very sparse or outdated for how to go about booting to a RAM disk. I need to be be able to boot a PC without a hard drive in it. I want to be able to PXE boot a PC and supply it with a RAM disk image that also contains the contents of the root file system (obviously stripped down enough to keep the file size small and the boot up time fast).What I have gathered so far is that I need to extract the contents of the initrd.img file, add files as necessary, and repackage the initrd.img file. What I get confused on is how to configure the kernel line parameters to tell it to boot to RAM and not the hard drive and how to go about modifying the init script in the initrd.img to not switch to the hard drive for the root file system. I can't find anything on the net that describes concrete steps on how to go about accomplishing all of this. I'm aware of the existence of Live CD's, but I need to be able to boot the PC without relying on a hard drive, CD, or any other external media. It needs to get all of its contents from the PXE boot server and boot to RAM only. I have the PXE boot side configured successfully. Also, putting the root file system on a NFS share is also out of the question.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a program that is very heavily hitting the file system, reading and writing randomly to a set of working files. The files total several gigabytes in size, but I can spare the RAM to keep them all mostly in memory. The machines this program runs on are typically Ubuntu Linux boxes.
Is there a way to configure the file system to have a very very large cache, and even to cache writes so they hit the disk later? I understand the issues with power loss or such, and am prepared to accept that. Crashing aside, in normal operation the writes should eventually reach the disk!Or is there a way to create a RAM disk that writes-through to real disk?
I had a drive that kept kernel panic'ing so my data center recommended using the spare hard drive to reinstall OS on, and import the data from the old drive. (they checked the hardware, it wasn't the hardware) The new install is done, and I need to mount the old drive and get backups off it since my data center does not provide management whatsoever.
It's the same OS on both (Cent OS 5.4 32-bit) I'm an advanced user on windows, but linux gets me. I can ssh in, do basic stuff like setup IP ranges and restart services. I normally navigate the box through SFTP so I have a gui. WHM shows me my drives as such

after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died.The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops.One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two systems, both having file systems running on LVM. System No 1 has 2 PATA HDD (40 and 80 GB) running linux on LVM. System 2 has a single SATA HDD (300 GB) which again uses LVM. What i was trying to do was to add the two HDD in system 1 to system 2, possibly with little or no data loss. So i connected the PATA drives from system 1 to system 2 and booted up. The system booted up to the openSUSE 11.3 splash screen and stopped after scanning the HDDs. Frankly i never expected openSUSE to try n auto mount the new drives. I think the problem was caused because both the systems had VG and LV of the same names. Can the volume group be renamed, maybe from a live CD or somthing?? System 2 is not boot able now.
