General :: Maintenance - Make Changes In Maintenance Mode

May 4, 2010

I notice when Linux boots in maintenance mode the filesystem is read-only.

Is there a way to change this, perhaps remounting as writable?

An example of this being a problem is that I was unable to open vi because there were too many session files....

Not to mention it would be nice to actually fix problems....

What are you meant to be able to do if you can't make any changes to the filesystem? What kind of maintenance can be expected?

Debian :: Maintenance Mode After Dist-upgrade

Sep 6, 2015

I have been using Debian for around two years now. I have a small home server running Debian stable i386 and keep it regularly updated (once or twice a week I perform apt-get update and afterwards apt-get dist-upgrade). The system was originally installed with Debian Wheezy and afterwards upgraded.

However, after entering dist-upgrade tonight, around 42 packages had to be updated. I agreed and afterwards got some errors. After apt-get install -f, the result is as follows:

Code:
Select allnickolay@tegulicium:$ sudo apt-get install -f
Reading package lists ... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information ... Done

[Code] ....

After rebooting the system, I am presented with the Debian Maintenance mode (root password for maintenance or Control-D to continue).

I tried dpkg --configure -a, apt-get install -f and aptitude install -f.

Unfortunately, still no resolution of the conflicts.

I assume this has to do something with the new Jessie 8.2 release ...

General :: Hard Disk & File System Maintenance

Feb 28, 2010

I have been running Ubuntu as my sole OS for about a month now, and aside from Computer Janitor, I have found no drive/fs cleaning tools, or defragging tools. I know this isn't Windoze, but surely there must be a way of maintaining your hard disk. I mean installs/uninstalls must leave detritus, and file moving must cause SOME fragmentation. Are there any apps, systems or methods in place that provide this functionality?

Networking :: Book Recommendation / VPN Network Maintenance

Nov 8, 2010

I work for a small retail company which until recently consisted of just one location. This month, we will open two new stores.I have been given the task of setting up a VPN network between the three locations and maintaining it.This network will consist of a main data server on the original location which has four client computers. The second location (another part of town) will have three clients, and the third location will have one client, all connected to the main data server (Retail POS system.) This will be a hardware VPN, with the main data server and all of the client computers running Windows XP.I have been working with the telecom company that is installing the phone system and is providing the routers at each location for the VPN.

I realize that since these are all Windows based machines it is not a Linux question, but I know that many of the experts here maintain Windows machines as well in their work. I am not an IT professional (I am a gemologist), but because I have been a Linux user for most of the last ten years, my boss seems to think I could handle this task so rather than contract this work out, he has asked me to do this. I truly enjoy this type of work, but I am concerned that my lack of knowledge is going to catch up with me, even though I do have a fairly good basic knowledge of Linux networking.

My question is simply this: Can anyone here recommend a good book or online training course which will give me the knowledge I need to maintain this system and trouble shoot it? I have searched online and there are literally hundreds of such books and it is like wading through a swamp. With such a small network, I am sure I can learn what I need, but if someone can recommend a good training/reference book that you have personal knowledge of, I would appreciate the recommendation.

Networking :: Remote Server Maintenance Through HS Network?

Dec 12, 2008

I'm putting a new system in my wife's classroom that I would like to be able to maintain remotely. I won't be able to ssh into the system becuase it is on a highschool network that I have no control over. I have a VPN running at home so I could setup the system to connect to that, but I'm not sure how reliable that is plus I will then probably have to setup two NICs so that the system can also be present on the school network. Seems to add complexity and possible problems.
Are there other options here? I will do the research, I just need a starting place.

OpenSUSE :: Website Design / Maintenance Tool Sets

Oct 15, 2010

Two part question:
1. what tools are recommended for designing web pages?
2. What tool sets are recommended for maintaining them?

I suspect that the first question really addresses the second rather than the literal question because of the source of the request. Here's the environment. A small church wants to post and maintain a website. Various non-tech persons will be responsible for maintaining much of
the content of the site. This tells me that they want/need a site that contains the necessary content maintenance tools within the site itself, not a tool on the individual desktops with the only real need for the design/dev tools being for initial construction of the site and a GOOD book on site design to guide construction of the site in the first place.

Ubuntu Servers :: New RAID - Recommended Maintenance And Backups

Feb 22, 2011

I decided to create a file server for my family. I have set up a RAID 6 (4 disk) array. My thoughts were to back up the array to a hard drive monthly. Store the drive in a WiebeTech Drivebox, off site, in a "fire proof" box. (The kind for papers sold at Staples or Office Depot. After a year, I would have 12 back-ups. I would then overwrite the previous hard drive. (i.e. HDD from March 2011 would be overwritten on March 2012.)

Additionally, I was wondering if there was recommended maintenance to verify the array is working properly. Right now, I am moving data to the array so quickly that I am backing up every few days between three hard drives. (Back-up #4 was written to Drive #1 after Drive #1 was reformatted.) I am aware that I could use rsync. (Which I currently use for backing up my portable USB HDD to the RAID array.)

Ubuntu :: Setting Root Password For Maintenance Shell - Failed

Aug 10, 2010

I'd like to keep root pw==sudo pw==user pw on a box with Code: $ lsb_release -ds Ubuntu 9.10 $ uname -rv 2.6.31-22-generic #61-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 02:02:56 UTC 2010 Just now it hung going to sleep, so I shutdown via BRS. On cold boot, HD mount failed and I got the prompt to hit Esc to goto maintenance shell. I did that, got the prompt for the root password, and entered my sudo.

That failed! though it has worked before ... but I changed my user password on that box recently, and I'm pretty sure I haven't needed to fsck between then and now. I'm wondering: What do I need to do to set my root pw? I was able to C-d out of the shell, and karmic took care of itself, but I'd prefer not to rely on that. Is there a way to make my root pw always equal my user pw? If so, is that a Very Bad Idea?

Fedora :: Hard Disk Failure Throws To "maintenance Terminal"

Oct 12, 2010

I had a hard disk used entirely for data archiving (no os files in there!) and it just failed, so I opened up the PC case and removed it. The problem is that I had set it to be automounted on startup (specified in /etc/fstab), and now when Fedora is loading it outputs an fsck error "cannot find/locate a superblock in /dev/sdb1" (that is the removed drive) and it throws me to a "maintenance terminal". I tried to remove the /dev/sdb1 entry from /etc/fstab, but the system wouldn't let me save the new file because the filesystem was in read-only mode.
