I've surprisely recognized that it's possible to write a filesystem on a hard disk without any valid partition. Well, the general advantages of partitions are clearly. But what are possible disadvantages or limitaions if you don't use a partition (e.g. if you want to use the complete space as one volume for data mining or so)?

I have installed vmware in windows server 2003 enterprise edition. When I installed I changed the default installation folder from c: drive to i: drive, as I do not have space in c: drive. After I captured red hat linux cd in vmware and reached partitioning section and continued I got a message like "an error has occured no valid devices were find on which to create new file systems, please check the hardware for the cause of the problem". View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a program that is very heavily hitting the file system, reading and writing randomly to a set of working files. The files total several gigabytes in size, but I can spare the RAM to keep them all mostly in memory. The machines this program runs on are typically Ubuntu Linux boxes.
Is there a way to configure the file system to have a very very large cache, and even to cache writes so they hit the disk later? I understand the issues with power loss or such, and am prepared to accept that. Crashing aside, in normal operation the writes should eventually reach the disk!Or is there a way to create a RAM disk that writes-through to real disk?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been running Ubuntu as my sole OS for about a month now, and aside from Computer Janitor, I have found no drive/fs cleaning tools, or defragging tools. I know this isn't Windoze, but surely there must be a way of maintaining your hard disk. I mean installs/uninstalls must leave detritus, and file moving must cause SOME fragmentation. Are there any apps, systems or methods in place that provide this functionality?

I have what seems to be a hard disk Write speed problems with my first hard drive. Timing the cp command of a 700 Meg file takes about 8 secs from disk 2 to 3 but takes 25 minutes from disk 2 to disk 1.
Here are the details:
Kubuntu 9.04 (Kernel 2.6.28-15-generic)
Hard Disk 1 : /dev/sda (WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0)
Partitioned
/dev/sda1 ext3 / 10 Gigs
/dev/sda2 extended 222 Gigs
/dev/sda5 linux-swap 2 Gigs
/dev/sda6 ext /home 220 Gigs
Hard Disk 2 : /dev/sdb (WDC WD2500AAKS-00F0A0)
Partitioned :
/dev/sdb1 ntfs 16 gigs
/dev/sdb2 xfs /home/eric/data_drive 216 Gigs

By doing 'time cp ...sdb1/test.avi ...sdc1' takes about 8 seconds and same vice-versa. the command 'time cp ...sdb1/test.avi ...sdb1/test1.avi takes about 11 seconds and the same holds true if sdc1 is used But copy sdb1 or sdc1/test.avi to either sda1 or sda6 and it takes 25 minutes. Same problem if I copy from the same drive partition (sda). I have booted a livecd Knoppix 6.2 and the same problems happens.. So safe to say it's not Kubuntu. The only thing that is left to do is backup and reformat the partitions as XFS and try again. I also did a full smartcontrol Extended test and no errors. Checked all the various logs and nothing found.

My machine will stay up for long periods of time, or sometimes only a few mins, also it doesn't seem related to just using a particular program. As you can imagine this is leading to a bag of woes. After reading on a forum about logs I went to /var/log and in the system log found the following entry . . .
"Jan 10 18:46:10 jon-desktop kernel: [ 92.718896] Either the lower file is not in a valid eCryptfs format, or the key could not be retrieved. Plaintext passthrough mode is not enabled; returning -EIO"
This is repeated multiple times and having checked after a few crashes seems to be the central problem. Being specific about the crashes, they freeze the entire system. Can't ctl-alt-del and sound loops, have to hard reset. I have a feeling that when I first installed Ubuntu 9.10 I selected to use an encrypted file system but have a feeling that I didn't set it up correctly. Not sure exactly what I didn't do but I seem to remember it was to do with generating a passphrase. So . . .
1) What is this error from my logs?
2) Is it linked to me not setting up the encrypted filesystem correctly?
3) Is there a way to check the settings / sort them out properly?
4) Is there documentation for my dullard state which can aid me in this, or is it quite simple?
have Debian "testing" installed. During the installation I selected to have a separate /home partition. / partition is ~10Gb, and my /home is ~300Gb. I didn't think I would need more than 10 for /.The other night, Debian informed me that I had 0 bytes remaining on /. I purged /temp an went about my day, only to be greeted with the message again the next morning.I've tried shrinking /home and increasing / via an Ubuntu live CD with GParted, but for some reason it did not want to work. However, I am beginning to suspect that my /home folder is occupying the / partition, and not the separate /home partition.Output of fdisk -l

On my embedded linux box, running on Linux Kernel 2.6.9 embedded with BusyBox utilities.
An Objective are follow:
1/ To figure out how many partitions are on the hard disk
2/ Create a extra partition about 10GB size on the hard disk
3/ Format the partition and mount var on that partition
Only utility to perform above operations I have "sfdisk" utility from BusyBox collection. Which get installed at the time of image flash in to ROM (8mb ROM size). The following is the root directory structure where hdd as a directory mounted /mnt/hdd1

I would like to carve my hard drive up from the LiveCD environment while preserving my current data and Lucid installation.

After I have installed all my programs, I need to install windows and I need visual studio. So I was thinking of taking 20 GB from the /home directory and using that for windows. I can use gparted. However, many posters on here think it is best to use gparted by booting from the disk. However, I cannot do this, as I don't have any DVD drivers. And I can't really afford to buy one just for this reason. What is the best way to do this?

I have installed 1tb hard drive and would like to partition as follows:
1) / - 20g
2) /swap - 6G
3) /photos /150g
4) /videos /500g
5) /audio /300g
After 2-3 partition an extended partition automatically created in which I am not able to create specified capacity i.e., say I want 150g of /photos partition, the /videos partition is automatically reduced and a free space at the end appears. Some free space is always there which i am not able to understand. Nevertheless i clicked to create, but I get an error viz. 'device not created'.

After making one partition a raid partition, I rebooted the system. The computer stopped mid-way during booting, and brought me to the shell. On typing fsck -p, it told me an unexpected error occured in the partition which I had made for raid. Is there some condition that we cannot boot from a disk containing one of the raid partitions ?
