View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been running Ubuntu as my sole OS for about a month now, and aside from Computer Janitor, I have found no drive/fs cleaning tools, or defragging tools. I know this isn't Windoze, but surely there must be a way of maintaining your hard disk. I mean installs/uninstalls must leave detritus, and file moving must cause SOME fragmentation. Are there any apps, systems or methods in place that provide this functionality?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI notice when Linux boots in maintenance mode the filesystem is read-only.
Is there a way to change this, perhaps remounting as writable?
An example of this being a problem is that I was unable to open vi because there were too many session files....
Not to mention it would be nice to actually fix problems....
What are you meant to be able to do if you can't make any changes to the filesystem? What kind of maintenance can be expected?
I have just created a periodic maintenance schedule for friends using Windows XP, covering tasks needing to be done weekly, monthly, semi-annually and annually. That set me to wondering what maintenance my Kubuntu system needs. What periodic maintenance do you do?

"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).
Are there any commands or software that can do any of the following:
cache cleaner
orphan removal
Before I start writing my own file maintenance script, maybe one such program/scripts already exist somewhere. Am looking for a file maintenance script/application that is configurable that I can use to process files under certain criteria, for example, removing files that are x-number of days old, gzip'ping files if they are core dumped files, removing files if they are zero-sized files etc. Am not sure logrotate is the solution that am looking for.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot Xp and Ubuntu 10.10.
Recently I was downloading some upgrades in Ubuntu and unfortunately the power to the system got off.
Thereafter on booting it comes to the Grub menu and I'm able to select the OS from the list but if I choose Ubuntu it comes up with a message "General error mounting file system" and the terminal is activated. However, if XP is selected it boots with no issues.
/dev/sda6 is ubuntu installation
/dev/sda7 is swap partition
I went through lot of threads over the net and tried fsck, e2fsck and other variations of that command but at the end all I get the message as
it says sda6 is clean but for sda7 it says :
Superblock invalid trying backup blocks.... Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda7 at the end it suggests "u might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>"
refering some threads here I tried my luck with live CD and the command : sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sda7

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having real issues installing 10.04 to an SSD - I had one SSD fail, and have replaced it with a brand new one, but the 10.04 installer fails at beginning to write files to the disk with this error:
[Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/target/bin'.
Curiously:
* Windows XP will install to this SSD with no issues
* I can install 10.04 to a standard HDD with no errors.
What is happening that is stopping me from installing 10.04 to this drive? I am fairly sure that there is no issue with the SSD (I have two brand new, identical OCZ Vertex II 60gb drives which both encounter this error.)
I have tried partitioning the drive using gparted on another machine, leaving 5mb free at the start of the drive, and having a single partition for /, and a 1gb swap partition. "Round to cylinders" was unchecked. The partitioning was successful, and the drives can be mounted on my other machine, but the 10.04 installer encounters the same error.
Installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it works very well except I cant format cd or dvds. I am using the disk utility program in administration and keep getting the following error:
Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sr0: Input/output error
I have tried mounting and unmounting - makes no difference.
I was trying to install Ubuntu desktop and laptop edition on a Sony Vaio netbook from a USB drive, but after I select the entire disk to be used and hit enter I get this message No root file system is defined. correct this from the partitioning menu. View 15 Replies View RelatedI installed F11 on a SATA 500 GB Hard drive. I plugged this HD in various computers. It worked fine.
However, when I try it on the following platform (the one I have to get it to work): (PC104 bus, AMD 1.1GZ with 512 RAM), I get a file system error during bootup.
On the other hand, the system gave the chance to enter the root password. So, once I did this, I tried to run commands "fsck -f /dev/sda" and "fsck -f /dev/sda1". The command could not find sda or sda1.
I tried the fsck on different platforms (with the same HD), it worked fine.
I returned the CPU board to the vendor, and I am expecting a new board soon. I assumed the problem could be with the board itself. But, I am not sure.
I am getting an error message at step 5 of 8 in the installation process. I am using Ubuntu LiveCD. The caption of the error is 'No root file system' and the message itself says 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I enclose a screenshot of this. I had also problems with booting Ubuntu and Windows after installing Ubuntu to an external hard disk so I probably have to also create a new boot menu (may be it is differently called, 'grub' possibly, I am not really sure).
