General :: Mount A Hard Drive With Pre-existing File System And Data?

I had a drive that kept kernel panic'ing so my data center recommended using the spare hard drive to reinstall OS on, and import the data from the old drive. (they checked the hardware, it wasn't the hardware) The new install is done, and I need to mount the old drive and get backups off it since my data center does not provide management whatsoever.
It's the same OS on both (Cent OS 5.4 32-bit) I'm an advanced user on windows, but linux gets me. I can ssh in, do basic stuff like setup IP ranges and restart services. I normally navigate the box through SFTP so I have a gui. WHM shows me my drives as such
Found Disk: hda
Found Disk: sdb
so I'm assuming SDB is my old drive and the drive I need to access. I attempted to follow instructions on
Dropbox will not start properly because my Lucid installation is on a SS HD (/dev/sdc) but my data, including my Dropbox folder is on an internal NTFS-formatted HD (/dev/sda), and I also have another internal HD for backups (/dev/sdb).
For some reason I can get the backups HD to auto-mount on startup, but not the data HD. My fstab file looks like this:
I installed ubuntu off of my laptop and put the Ubunto file system on a 1TB hard drive off of a drive enclosure. Now the only way I can access Windows is if the drive is still connected to the laptop. NO EXTERNAL HD No BOOT MENU when I boot up.

Is it possible to mount a 2nd hard disk without erasing the data that is already on it? If so, what command must I enter. The system recognizes that the disk is there, I just can't access the data because it hasn't been mounted.
I have a Seagate 1TB external USB 2.0 hard disk which contains 740 GB of data. Everytime I connect, it shows the memory occupied and the remaining memory(190GB)..but when i try to access the folders inside they read empty... nothing is seen in the folders.. My friend just got a gaming laptop that he won't let anyone else use (his last one got infected when his girlfriend surfed on it for just one hour -- he refuses to use antivirus since he claims he knows how to keep clean, but he doesn't trust others).
Because I used Linux a bit once, I said to him what if I could promise not to make any changes to your hard drive, and I told him that I was pretty sure I could boot to a live cd and then only write files to a usb key. He's actually willing to let me try (I showed him some linux sites I was looking at, and he believes me that we can do this).
1) Is there anything I either MUST do or else must NOT do to make sure I make no changes to his laptop's hard drive? And so that any changes are only going to go on the usb drive I hook up?
2) Since he's got an i7 processor, I assume I should get a version of ubuntu that supports 64 bits, right?
I have a second hard drive with fedora 10 installed on it. My primary drive and os is fedora 12. How do I edit the fstab file in order to mount the second hard drive and get files off of it
I'm looking for a way to quickly remove all data/partitions/boot records from my hard drives while running linux (distribution is irelevant). There are lots of ways to do this that I know of, but they all have some problems. Here's a list of what I've tried/thought of already. The most obvious is fdisk: Simply delete all the partitions. This usually works just fine and is very quick, but there are times it just doesn't....I'm realy not sure what gets left behind...I remove the MBR as well..but whatever it is, it's in the way. A couple other options are:
Both of these approaches are great if you're selling the components and want to make it very difficult for anyone to recover data. The draw-back is they take so very long to run. I've got four 1.5 TB drives that I've been writing zeros to for 2 days now. If you thought watching grass grow or paint drying was boring. A hundred years ago or so, when I was doing tech support for Windows 95 users we used this nifty dos-based debug script to wipe the hard drive. It was sort-of a last resort thing, but it worked beautifully, most of the time. If the customer had already formated, fdisked, fdisk /mbr, reinstalled Windows, but still couldn't get the thing to work, this would clean the drive so you could do a fresh install.
Just in case someone wants this, I'll post it. To use: first boot to some type of DOS environment in which you have the program "debug".
Does memtet86 write any data to the hard drive? or leave any data in memory once the test is complete. If so does turning of the machine or reboot clears the memory?
I have a 1.5TB Western Digital Caviar Green in a USB 2.0 external setup with an ext4 file system. I'm going to purchase a 2.0TB Western Digital Caviar Green in a USB 2.0 external case, copy the data over and put my 1.5TB in a fire-resistant box in another house. I'm worried about a couple things however:
(1) I'm worried about the long-term viability of _any_ file system years into the future. I've been storing my data on hard drives (instead of CDs, DVDs or BDs) for years now due to their higher reliability than optical disks. However, the file system used in optical disks is UDF which I think has much longer viability into the future. I'm not going to store terabytes of data on optical discs of course, so I'm wondering what I should choose for a hard drive file system. FAT32 or NTFS (due to Windows' 90%+ presence on the desktop, including still being used by Windows 7) may be the best choice, but I much rather have a open source file system, especially one that allows for permissions, timestamps, etc.
(2) As for my 2TB hard drive that I will be using for a while into the future, should I continue to use ext4 (I've had no problem with it thus far), but is there another file system that has better performance when storing and transferring gigs of data?
My old centos 5.5 server stopped working so I setup a new one and I can't mount it to get the data off (if you're curious, I do have a NAS, but because of renovations it was accidentally shut-off July 2...)here's the fdisk -l:
I am using ubuntu 10.10 (maverick meerkat), and i am loving it. While installing, i hadn't created multiple partitions. But now i feel the need to create a few. How can i repartiton the hard drive without reinstalling?
I've been installing/tweaking F12, and I've found something that I can't say I've ever seen or expected to find before: the contents of my ~/Documents folder has lost its permissions and ownership info. I restored it from a backup last night/this morning, and I've rebooted a few times since then. Other folders from the backup are OK, just Documents.I don't know what my options are. I could try to blow it away and restore it, but that doesn't answer what caused it. If there's a "relabel" or something, that might help... though I've never had to do it before. Could it be that after these two-and-some-change years, my hard drive is giving out? Good thing I have a recent backup... but it'd be a shame to lose all my work getting F12 to work again.
What i really need to know is if there is a way to access a Ubuntu file system on a hard drive from a live CD. When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.
when I load into Ubuntu 11.04 from my USB drive, why can't I access the files on my internal hard drive? I mount the drive but I cannot see any of the music, videos or documents contained on that drive (which is also an Ubuntu 11.04 drive). I was wondering so I could copy those files onto my external hard drive and reinstall since my Ubuntu crashed.
I've been reading forums for 2 weeks now and it took me a week to figure out how to post a new thread.My laptop is under warranty but Acer wont help!Acer has suggested that I pay a third party to rescue my data from my hard drive.I get a startup message that says "Check cable" "Operating system not found" so I downloaded Puppy 3 and it looks and operates fine but I see only one empty hard drive . The computer has two.
I am trying to recover files off a 3.5" IDE Hard Drive that had Windows ME installed on it. I have access to a MacBook, Windows XP Desktop PC, and a cd with Ubuntu 8.10 on it.
Attempts:
1) If I make the HD the only primary master HD it won't boot up.
2) If I make it a slave drive it won't boot up.
3) I purchased an external enclosure from Radio Shack which turned out to be crap and online reports supported this conclusion. I got nowhere with that thing. Bestbuy doesn't sell 3.5" IDE enclosures.
4) By using an IDE / SATA to USB kit, I am able to connect the HD to the PC via USB cable. XP will detect the drive, however the HD will not my displayed under "My Computer" nor "Disk Management".
Onto linux (this is where I grabbed the Ubuntu cd):
5) When connected, the HD will show up under "Computer" as a "USB Drive". When I double click on it I get the error "Unable to mount location Can't mount file".
Recently (about 2 weeks ago) the power went out randomly in my household while my computer was running. Upon restarting, GRUB, (which I am still unsure what exactly that is) seems to fail to mount my hard drive. I've been searching for answers since this has occurred and I came to the realization that I am a complete newbie and I dived into the deep end of a pool without learning to swim first.
Initially, I managed to figure out how to wipe my hard drive and install Ubuntu 9.04 and everything was great until this happened. It was a learning process for me and I spent much time collecting info on the basics of Linux. So I know how to use the terminal (for the most part) and I can do a few other things. The good things is: I am excellent at following directions. So that's a start.
Here's what's happened and what I've done so far: Upon turning computer on GRUB tries to load my HD and fails. It gives me a list of strange codes and errors (I can write it all down and post if it will help otherwise it'll take me a decent amount of time) and starts something called "BusyBox". From here I have no idea. So searched a bit online and found that with my installation disk I can boot Ubuntu on some sort of "Live" mode. This allows me to access the terminal but my HD is not mounted (so I think) due to the OS running from the Disc.
What file system should I use to partition a slow and old hard drive? I know that ext2 was best for old computers which mine is not but I am using an old hard drive for extra storage and I was curious if anyone knew if using ext2 or ext4 would show any performance differences.
I;ve been using Ubuntu (10.xx) for a few months now and am really getting the hang of it.My NAS drive has now failed.It is a WD Mybook world edition 1tb with the blue rings.The drive spins fine and in windows I can see the partitions but I understand the file system is linux based.Can anyone help as to how I can mount the drive and recover the files using ubuntu / linux.I have a USB caddy to connect the SATA drive to my laptop.
I had installed this drive as a slave drive yesterday, and it had worked perfectly, mounted good, etc., etc.
Today, I fire up ol' trusty, and my slave drive doesn't show in either "Places," "System Monitor," or "Disk Usage Analyzer." It does, however, show up in BIOS and "Gparted Partition Editor." A mounting option isn't present in "Places" as it was yesterday.
If I need to manually mount it or whatever, would someone please list the steps I need to take to get my HD back?
My main harddrive is a Western Digital 160 Gb IDE and is listed as /dev/sda. My slave is a Seagate 80 Gb SATA and is listed as /dev/sdb
i needed to change my external hard drive's file system from ext3 to fat32, to use it in windows, which i did the simple way: i shrunk the ext3 partition, made a fat32 partition, copied the files over, removed the ext3 and made the fat32 bigger. unfortunately, while gparted was making the partition larger, my computer shut down. i lost all my files and the partition messed up immediately. i made a new fat32 partition, after deleting the old one, but noticed that gparted was showing 100 gigs already in use (???). so now i have a 300 gb hard drive with only 200 gb i can use; i ran df to make sure gparted wasn't messing up, but indeed it shows the partition as being only 200 gigs in size. i haven't tried making any other kind of partition yet, such as ext3, for fear of losing my files again, and because it wouldn't be permanent anyway, because i need those files in windows and stupid microsoft won't make their OS ext3 compatible.
My portable hard drive (WD My Passport), which used to work correctly now does not automount on my Ubuntu system. It does work on a Windows machine or even when plugged into WD HD TV, which is a Linux based device. Manually mount or fix my external hard drive. I can't format the drive because I have important data on it. The drive is 1TB Select USB 2.0 Desktop Hard Drive from Iomega. When I plug it in, a message appears that reads:

Last time I was able to fix it by typing in the terminal 'sudo fsck /dev/sdb2'. Once again it's not mounting automatically and I'm not even getting the error message. I just purchased a Western Digital My Book World Edition External hard drive and need to mount and format. My router sees the connection but I am now unsure how to proceed. Will linux detect the new device through my wireless connection? I know very little about Unix based or Linux commands.
