I have a new HP ProBook 4510s, which will probably not run Win 7 which came with it. grin).So I figured I'd image the disk. Clonezilla won't boot. I tried with several CDs. Slax does boot. Ultimate boot CD boots.
View 7 RepliesI'm having some problems installing Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on my laptop - I tried first using the CD but selecting 'Install Ubuntu' from the menu did nothing at all so I'm using wubi instead. The initial wubi install was fine but attempting to boot into Ubuntu initial setup results in lock up. Booting without the graphic workaround option gets as far as: agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xC0000000.However with the workaround it gets further and the final log output is:set up 63M of stolen space.

Is there a way to have a loading splash screen or even have a static logo that is displayed during the boot process? I have my automated recovery method all ready to go short this one last feature. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop HP ProBook 4525s. First when I got it I installed Ubunu 11.04 and it worked fine until I pressed a wifi disable/enable button. After this system just stoped. Then I tried to use my backup but it didn't help, system did't boot. So, I decided to boot from live CD Ubuntu 11.04 to install the new system but it also didn't boot, just stoped at Ubuntu purple picture screen. The same situation with USB drive. Then I thied to install Ubuntu 10.10 and it worked well, so, I tried to upgrade it to 11.04. After all installation and cleaning were complete I rebooted my computer and got the some result as with live cd: system just stops booting at ubuntu purlpe screen and nothing happening.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a SATA boot disk with LILO installed. This disk is kinda like a recovery disk in that its supposed to boot up on any x86 PC. I'm however having trouble getting it to boot on a HP Probook laptop. I get the LILO 99 99 99 ... problem upon bootup.
I've already specified the linear option in my lilo.conf, which according to the LILO error codes might fix the problem but didn't.

I've tried specifying the lba32 option instead, but get the same problem.

Neither solution worked.
Does anyone know how to get this working? Or recommend another BIOS independent boot loader? I was using nuni in the past for my IDE version, but nuni doesn't support SATA drives.
fyi I'm booting up the disk and running LILO on another laptop that boots it up, before plugging it into the Probook to test.
I work in a library and want to set up several newer PCs. I cloned a HD containing Ubuntu 9.10 using Clonezilla. When I put the HD in another computer (exactly the same as the one on which I did the cloning) it will not boot.
After pressing the power button, it proceeds as follows:
BIOS loads "Grub Loading" appears on screen for several seconds Ubuntu icon appears for several seconds Icon disappears and then nothing, blank screen
Regarding Clonezilla, I used the advanced screens but chose only the default settings.
Also, if I boot to the Clonezilla CD on the cloned computer, I can choose the HD and the OS loads without a problem.
When i boot from Clonezilla it keeps on freezing at the same point.I boot up and select clonezilla live then select the 600X800 (or whatever it is), I then see text scrolling from the bottom of the screen upwards as it is loading the kernel etc but freezes at a specific point for some reason which means i cant clone my drive. Does any have any ideas on how to fix this issue?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got an HP ProBook 4520s that comes with 500 GB with Windows 7.
It comes with 4 partitions: SYSTEM, the main Windows partition, HP Recovery and HT Tools.
I tried to have OpenSuse installation to resize the Windows larger partition but it said that it couldn't with this message:
"The partition on disk /dev/sda is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.
You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sda as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool."
So I resized the Windows partition from Windows 7 and added 3 partitions on the empty space for Linux: /, swap and /home. Still OpenSuSE installation has shown this warning message:
"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24 (result is error 18 during grub MBR)."
I configured OpenSuSE installation to install on those partitions but Grub could not install the boot loader with this message: "grub> setup --stage=/boot/grub/stage2 --force-lba (hd0,2) (hd0,2)
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition grub> quit"
I already tried this in OpenSuSE 11.4 but I suspected it needed newer parted and grub versions, so I also tried OpenSuSE 12.1 milestone 3 with the same results.
The installation finishes but no Grub boot menu appears, it goes to Windows as if no Linux was installed, although the installed version is there in the 3 partitions that were created on Windows, I just cannot make them boot.
I have long been using clonezilla as my backup/restore software and have never had a problem with it before, ever. Today I backed up my entire disk (windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10) and upgraded to 11.04 to try it out. I didn't like it, so I decided to restore the backup. Now I can't boot my computer. It gets to a black screen and nothing happens. No error message, nothing. I can still boot from a live USB (which is what I am using now), and I can also boot from a Windows Live CD. I tried using the MBR repair on Windows and reinstalling Grub through the Ubuntu Live USB. Neither of them have worked. Do you have any ideas what the problem might be?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem figuring out how to clone and restore partitions from images on a test host, ie. I have different Linux and Windows images in sda2 that I need to restore on sda1 to run tests.
Here's a typical scenario:
1. On a brand new hard-disk, create two partitions, one to hold the OS to run tests, and a second to hold Clonezilla images
2. Install XP in sda1
3. Boot with Clonezilla Live, and save sda1 into an image in sda2
4. Install Linux: It installs GRUB as boot loader in the MBR
5. Save Linux into an image in sda2
6. Restore XP: By default, Clonezilla doesn't restore XP's boot loader, and leaves GRUB to boot XP :-/
How can I force Clonezilla to restore the boot loader in the MBR (while leaving the partition table as-is), so that Linux=GRUB and Windows=NTLDR always?
essentially what the title says. Clonezilla cannot be installed in ubuntu so running a live linux on the usb and installing the applications in that is not an option.

I'm logged in as root on Lenny.I created a new partition on the USB drive using fdisk, set the id to b (w95 fat32), and toggled the boot tag.The instructions on the Clonezilla website describes using the mkfs.vfat command to create a file system but Lenny returns a "command not found" result when I try. I tried using mkdosfs but it also returned "command not found".Can mkdosfs format a disk with the bootable tag toggled?

I have extracted the files onto /mnt from clonezilla zip file. I appended the necessary lines told by website to the grub.menu.lst , after rebooting when i select that clonezilla from grub,it was telling unrecognized format and cant mount the partition.

I feel like a moron.I wasn't watching what I was doing while copying an image to a 1tb external yesterday. Clonezilla resized my external and all I can see on it is a 75gb partition with Windows on it and the 8xxgb partition that is unallocated.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to backup a drive with an LVM2 partition. 8 of the 10 partitions in the LVM restore fine, two do not. SDA1 is the boot partition, SDA2 is an LVM2 partition with 10 partitions inside of it. When I restore the image created by Clonezilla the partition names are there but two of the partitions are unreadable and unmountable. I'm certain Clonezilla is skipping these two partitions because its entire image is around 40G and when I TGZ these two partitions I get an 80GB file. Clonezilla doesn't appear to give any errors and as it "winds up" it shows that it's unmounting the LVM partitions and I see my missing two in its list but when Clonezilla makes the image it never mentions the two I (really) want. I'm trying Clonezilla's DD method right now but it appears to be DDing each partition (going through the LVMs right now).
View 1 Replies View RelatedOne of my computers is a netbook with no CD drive, so I need to create a bootable USB stick so I can reload a Clonezilla-made backup image from an external HD on to the netbook.I bought a 4Gb thumb drive and used Parted Magic to create a 200Mb partition on it. I formatted this and the remaining free space both as FAT32 and used Parted Magic to flag the small partition as bootable. Then I loaded the Clonezilla Live files onto this boot partition.Now the thumb drive boots up ok, but goes straight into a Parted Magic menu screen from which there is no way out! It's just the menu screen alone and has no PM functionality. This also happens on other systems where there is no PM installed or in the CD drive. So it must be something PM has done to the thumb drive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been able to get a few of my desired tools working 100% (dban, gparted, ophcrack, UBCD) but what I would ultimately hope to get working is CloneZilla! I was able to get the Clonezilla user interface to load correctly but when I choose any of the options I encounter an error "ntfs volume version 3.1" repetitively. I have a feeling it is because I am launching the iso wrong in my menu.lst config file for grub. This is what I have.

I just backed up a complete copy of my C drive which has been partitioned 3 ways to have both windows and Linux mint on it with the loader which comes up when the computer is turned on. My question is that recently I used Norton ghost to backup my system and it failed to reinstall the grub. Will clonezilla reinstall the boot loader on my drive if I make a complete restore of the entire C drive. Is there any thing else I should be concerned about upon restore which I should take into account? I'm fine now but am asking concerning the future possibility of a restore.

The image is to be saved to an external USB drive. I have used Clonezilla before with success, and a few failures, hope this isn't another.The LiveCD boots fine, I select the first video mode, it then tries to start but reports an 'undefined video mode number :317' it then offers the option to carry on or 'Enter' to try other options or 'Space' to continue, I have tried both options but they end up with the same out come, which is the following.
It does a bunch of hardware detection, 'usbcore' etc etc, then gets stuck at 'libata version 3.00 loaded' for around 5 minutes, then eventually moves onto 'clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -6575758ns) Time:hpet clocksource has been installed', stick on this for around 3 minutes and then eventually I end up with'/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off' Is there a solution to this? Or just have to accept that it will now work with my hardware? The odd thing here is that people have used Clonezilla successfully with this type of Netbook, I also read that people and issue but offered no solution.
I'm trying to restore an image from a 40gb partition(6gb used) to a 100gb partition. I set everything up in gparted and and restored the partition image with clonezilla. In gparted, the partition shows the full 100gb partition with 6gb used, however when I boot windows and open the properties on the C: partition, it shows that it's only 40gb. Is there some setting to restore the partition image and use the full 100gb?

I have done a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04. My HP ProBook 4520s notebook computer exhibits the following problem. I use the notebook with lid closed, connected to Samsung SyncMaster P2350 23" LCD Monitor. When Ubuntu boots it selects 1024 x 768 resolution. I then go into the display settings and notice that it is set to display the same image on both monitors. If I uncheck this setting, I see the Samsung and can make changes to the resolution settings of both laptop monitor and Samsung monitor, however, when I click Apply, the Samsung I am viewing goes blank. If I then open the laptop lid, it too is blank. After a cold reboot, I am able to get the Samsung monitor to act as a desktop estension perfectly, but not as the only monitor with the laptop screen turned off. Any attempt to turn off the laptop monitor in the settings results in no screen at all.
In the office, I have an LG 19" Flatron monitor, and Ubuntu does not exhibit the same problem. I can boot up with lid closed, and the Flatron works fine as the only monitor and at it's native resolution all by itself. Booting with lid open, and then closing the lid, also results in the Samsung going blank, but probably for the reason that there is no option in power management to DO NOTHING when the Lid is closed.
It seems that Ubuntu have forgotten about people who use their laptops as desktops in this way. I am not happy to run with the laptop open and split screens, as I cannot get the launcher into the Samsung, and everything has to be moved over all the time, is there any work around that anyone may know about?
The HP ProBook uses Intel Graphics, for which there are no particular additional drivers I am told. The problem also happened in Ubuntu 10.10, but before 10.10 I don't recall ever having this problem (from 7.04 thru 10.04)
