I feel like a moron.I wasn't watching what I was doing while copying an image to a 1tb external yesterday. Clonezilla resized my external and all I can see on it is a 75gb partition with Windows on it and the 8xxgb partition that is unallocated.
View 1 RepliesTuesday night I wanted to make a backup of my Ubuntu ext4 partition via Clonezilla so I configured that an image had to be made and it would be saved on the NTFS external disk. But it said it needed 23 hours to create a 5gb backup, so I resetted my computer as this took too long. But after this, Ubuntu nor Windows recognized my drive.
I called Seagate and they told me after troubleshooting 30 minutes, that there is no option of fixing the drive and I had to send it to RMA. What could be wrong? Clonezilla works via a bootable ISO on Debian. The disk drive is still spinning. I already rebooted the external drive, but it's not working. In Linux the disk is no longer mounted and cannot be mounted:

What could have happened? Would the data still be accessible on the internal drive? Did I just loose 1.5TB data that was stored on the external disk?
I am backing up parts of my computer with DD, and i was wondering if there was a quick way to split the files created into 4.4GB sized files that will fit onto a DVD. Anyone have any idea of how to do this?

I'm logged in as root on Lenny.I created a new partition on the USB drive using fdisk, set the id to b (w95 fat32), and toggled the boot tag.The instructions on the Clonezilla website describes using the mkfs.vfat command to create a file system but Lenny returns a "command not found" result when I try. I tried using mkdosfs but it also returned "command not found".Can mkdosfs format a disk with the bootable tag toggled?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to clone my fedora8 HDD using clonezilla.I have downloaded,and want to boot from that.I have created one partition sda8 with 740 mb and formatted with ext3 and mounted that on /mnt. I have extracted the files onto /mnt from clonezilla zip file. I appended the necessary lines told by website to the grub.menu.lst , after rebooting when i select that clonezilla from grub,it was telling unrecognized format and cant mount the partition.
how to mount the partition permanently in fstab. Tell me how to modify the grub file to work correctly to boot from that partition.

I'm trying to backup a drive with an LVM2 partition. 8 of the 10 partitions in the LVM restore fine, two do not. SDA1 is the boot partition, SDA2 is an LVM2 partition with 10 partitions inside of it. When I restore the image created by Clonezilla the partition names are there but two of the partitions are unreadable and unmountable. I'm certain Clonezilla is skipping these two partitions because its entire image is around 40G and when I TGZ these two partitions I get an 80GB file. Clonezilla doesn't appear to give any errors and as it "winds up" it shows that it's unmounting the LVM partitions and I see my missing two in its list but when Clonezilla makes the image it never mentions the two I (really) want. I'm trying Clonezilla's DD method right now but it appears to be DDing each partition (going through the LVMs right now).
View 1 Replies View RelatedOne of my computers is a netbook with no CD drive, so I need to create a bootable USB stick so I can reload a Clonezilla-made backup image from an external HD on to the netbook.I bought a 4Gb thumb drive and used Parted Magic to create a 200Mb partition on it. I formatted this and the remaining free space both as FAT32 and used Parted Magic to flag the small partition as bootable. Then I loaded the Clonezilla Live files onto this boot partition.Now the thumb drive boots up ok, but goes straight into a Parted Magic menu screen from which there is no way out! It's just the menu screen alone and has no PM functionality. This also happens on other systems where there is no PM installed or in the CD drive. So it must be something PM has done to the thumb drive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been able to get a few of my desired tools working 100% (dban, gparted, ophcrack, UBCD) but what I would ultimately hope to get working is CloneZilla! I was able to get the Clonezilla user interface to load correctly but when I choose any of the options I encounter an error "ntfs volume version 3.1" repetitively. I have a feeling it is because I am launching the iso wrong in my menu.lst config file for grub. This is what I have.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI just backed up a complete copy of my C drive which has been partitioned 3 ways to have both windows and Linux mint on it with the loader which comes up when the computer is turned on. My question is that recently I used Norton ghost to backup my system and it failed to reinstall the grub. Will clonezilla reinstall the boot loader on my drive if I make a complete restore of the entire C drive. Is there any thing else I should be concerned about upon restore which I should take into account? I'm fine now but am asking concerning the future possibility of a restore.

The image is to be saved to an external USB drive. I have used Clonezilla before with success, and a few failures, hope this isn't another.The LiveCD boots fine, I select the first video mode, it then tries to start but reports an 'undefined video mode number :317' it then offers the option to carry on or 'Enter' to try other options or 'Space' to continue, I have tried both options but they end up with the same out come, which is the following.
It does a bunch of hardware detection, 'usbcore' etc etc, then gets stuck at 'libata version 3.00 loaded' for around 5 minutes, then eventually moves onto 'clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -6575758ns) Time:hpet clocksource has been installed', stick on this for around 3 minutes and then eventually I end up with'/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off' Is there a solution to this? Or just have to accept that it will now work with my hardware? The odd thing here is that people have used Clonezilla successfully with this type of Netbook, I also read that people and issue but offered no solution.
I'm trying to restore an image from a 40gb partition(6gb used) to a 100gb partition. I set everything up in gparted and and restored the partition image with clonezilla. In gparted, the partition shows the full 100gb partition with 6gb used, however when I boot windows and open the properties on the C: partition, it shows that it's only 40gb. Is there some setting to restore the partition image and use the full 100gb?

Is there a way to have a loading splash screen or even have a static logo that is displayed during the boot process? I have my automated recovery method all ready to go short this one last feature. View 4 Replies View RelatedI am currently generating some EPS images for my thesis and run into a 'practical' problem regarding their size.My method to generate them goes through a program which gives JPG files, and then I use "convert" to pass from the JPGs to a EPS:Code:convert File.jpg File.epsThe problem is that resulting EPS files are obscenely large which makes their inclusion in my thesis impractical.I know GIMP offers the same functionality (JPG > EPS) but considering I am working with many files I want to automatize the process (hence why I used "convert").Is there any way I can make "convert" to output smaller EPS files? Alternatively, is there another utility to do what I am doing?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to Ubuntu (Karmic with GNOME). I have a Samsung LED UEB7020, with an Asrock ION 330 BD player feeding to a Onkyo TXSR607, AV rec. The other day I downloaded NVidia v180.25, which was very useful, because it immediately solved an earlier teething problem of no sound. However immediately upon re-booting and ever since, the screen size is too big for the TV, meaning that I can not see the top, bottom, side and left of the display by about 2 inches either way. I have checked the NVidia resolution settings and they are correct for the TV, ie 1920 by 1080.

A friend of mine used traffic shaping / QoS here before I got the job. But we seem to have not made the best rules for the shaping as the connection was way faster without the shaper than with. As he himself installed the system alone I have nearly no knowledge how to put up another, better system.
About the hostel:
- 90 people in this house
- 10 mbit SDSL dedicated line, full flatrate
- very mixed type of internet traffic (P2P, HTTP, EMails, Rapidshare, Torrents, Skype, ...)
I would like to install a linux router with traffic shaping, QoS and maybe even SQUID. Googling for the words brought so much older stuff, but nothing newer.
This is not a huge deal but I have missing hard drive space, I re-sized an iso with k9copy I then used mv to move it to the other iso like so:
Code: mv this.iso that.iso which moved and renamed it, however I did not get any drive space back by effectively "deleting" the first iso. So my question is do I have an unnamed iso file floating around that cannot be deleted?
I'm trying to set up a customer who has two printers attached to their computer one is some sort of okidata color laser printer, which seems to work fine the other one is a brother HL-4040CDN, which prints fine from a Linux based application such as open office.
When i try to print from a program in wine, however, I can't for the life of me get it to print properly to legal sized paper, it doesn't complain about paper size or anything, it simply crops the print size to that of letter sized paper even though I tell it the paper size is Legal.
I have tried setting the default paper size on the printer's firmware settings, I have tried setting the paper size in cups both through the printer preferences applet and the web interface, i have tried telling the program to print to legal paper and the only thing i can affect is which end of the paper it prints to, i have even tried different drivers for CUPS, i'm not sure if the problem is wine, the program, the printer, or how wine talks to the specific printer via cups (the other printer prints fine) i am using ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10.
I have an external hard drive with an xfs partition on it. It was using an external journal, but in re-installing Slackware I removed the partition holding the external journal, forgetting what it was at the time. I didn't touch the contents of the external hard drive, but now I can't mount it and the various xfs programs seem to demand that it be mounted in order for them to change anything.Anyone have any ideas on how to change an xfs partition from external log to internal? Failing that, how do I get the information off it?

It showed me some message on shell, that it has detected the cdrom(although its dvd rom as well but nevermind) and its of ASUS. But how do i know which dev it was associated with in /dev/? Since i had to test something, i plugged it out, and save the output of ls /dev/ > ~/result.txt
after plugging the dvd-rom, i compared the results and was able to find that it was associated with simple cdrom i.e. /dev/cdrom. I wanted to know that is there any command that will tell me which /dev/ file was associated with external dvdrom? i tried to see in the following result
1) df -h ( no results, just the already mounted partitions)
2) fdisk -l ( same as above)
3) dmesg | tail (shown almost the same result as was shown on shell at the time of plugging the dvd)
I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Therefore, I am going to be cloning the 160gb drive to a 320gb drive to keep my system settings while I am waiting for my new drive. I will not change the size of the partitions to fill the 320gb drive. I'll just change the grub settings if I absolutely have to. After that, I am going to have to clone the 320gb drive back to the replacement 160gb drive. Am I going to have problems doing that since I will be going from a larger to a smaller drive?I typically use Clonezilla with the default settings.
