I have two separate Linux installations on my system which I can access from grub. Is there a way to get back to the grub menu to access the other system without having to reboot?

My problem is is that when I rebooted after a successful OS installation and apparent grub install, it went straight to boot up Windows 7. View 5 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario CQ60 with Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card. When I first installed Windows 7 followed by Karmic in dual boot I could boot into both OS. Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

# dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr+part.bin bs=512 count=1
On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):
# dd if=mbr+part.bin of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=446 conv=notrunc
2. By using the FEDORA rescue CD, I installed grub unto the new hard drive as follows:

# grub-install --root-directory=/boot hd0
reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

I'm trying to set the resolution to 1680x1020. I edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and try to manually enter the resolution but after a reboot it goes back to the default.

I've just switched from GNOME to KDE4. I'm using Mandriva 2010 with KDE 4.3I've got a problem with kget and ktorrent. There was a menu bar on top with several menus and in the options or somewhere I can't remember, I clicked to hide that menu. Now I can't get it back again.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a working RHEL in /dev/sda1 and a newly constructed Ubuntu Lucid in /dev/sda2. I'm going to edit the grub config and reboot the server into the new Ubuntu. However, I'm not 100% sure that the new distro can boot. And since my only way to access the server is via SSH, I need the network to be up too.
How can I configure Grub and Ubuntu so that if the server fails to boot, it will automatically reboot into the old RHEL? Currently using GRUB 0.93, but I can upgrade it if needed.
Update: In the end, no boot failure occured. But without the insurance from this, I wouldn't have attempted [URL]..
I have installed ubuntu 9.10 after the windows xp os, and then my grub.cfg file only contained information about linux.. my windows os couldnot be booted..But thats fine because i now work only on linux, so I could normally boot into ubuntu..
But now i tried to install fedora 12 on that partition on which windows was installed, and i set the space of that partition as "free". And then something went wrong, and i could not install fedora.
Now wen i boot into the normal ubuntu linux from the local hard disk, this error appears on screen - "No bootable media present, enter bootable disk and press enter."
I can boot into the installed os by first booting from a live cd, and selecting the "boot from local disk" option. But i cannot boot without a live cd.
I also reinstalled grub-pc package, but no change.
How can I modify my grub menu? I remember that on openSuSe was /boot/grub/menu.lst. But in debian there isn't it. In ubuntu is the same for modifying grub menu?
View 1 Replies View Relatedsince i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file

I regularly update my ubuntu (10.04), and new minor versions keep accumulating on the GRUB screen. Right now I have 5 different versions listed on the GRUB, even though I always select the latest version to work with.
Am I supposed to do anything to get rid of the old version references? Do these old versions affect disk space/performance?
I had Windows Vista installed on my computer and created a partition to install Fedora 15. I chose the option to install fedora on any free space, so it should have installed on the empty partition. When I boot up, there are two boot options. Fedora and Other. When I select other, it gives an error:BOOTMGR not found.Is there a way to add Windows Vista to the Grub Bootloader by editing the grub menu. I don't know if it will help, but here is what I get when I run fdisk in the terminal:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had debian squeeze already installed, then installed win 7. Windows overwrote by MBR, as I expected it to, so I used an ubuntu live cd to reinstall grub2 to debian root.
I rebooted, and sure enough I had grub back. The boot menu has debian on it. Just debian (crunchbang actually, but its the same thing).
So I added a script in /etc/grub.d (called Windows_11) to create a windows chainloader entry in grub.cfg, and ran update-grub.
Update-grub picks up my /etc/grub.d/Windows_11 script, and adds an appropriate chainloader entry to /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
So I would expect this new chainloader entry to show up in my boot menu when I boot up. But it doesn't; on booting I only have the option to select debian.
Here is my /boot/grub/grub.cfg -

It would also be nice if the Login screen could be set to the resolution that I want.
In previous releases, there were ways to do this. In 9.10, I haven't been able to figure out how.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSuddenly Ubuntu goes into low-graphics mode the last couple of days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution [URL].

The situation:
I have a CentOS 5.3 x64 server running the latest cPanel which works fantastic. I issued a graceful reboot and the server came back up (according to the DC) just fine to a login prompt. Apparently the system lost all of its IP address configuration. Primary IP, secondary IP's gateway, you name it and it was gone. Now my secondary IP's were showing in cPanel after I had the DC re-enter my main IP address/gateway. But listed as not active due to the fact that they were not anywhere to be attached to the interface. i.e. eth0:1 eth0:2 etc and so on.
I have no idea where to begin looking for this problem and am afraid to reboot it again (at least until I get my lantronix spider up there). I've never experienced this with any of my other CentOS/cPanel servers either. All similar configurations CentOS 5.3 x64, latest cPanel as well. My hardware is all Supermicro gear as well and has been solid in the past.
Maybe I'm just missing something, granted I've only been managing Linux based servers for about two years now. This is actually the first real problem I've ran into on any Linux distro, they are normally pretty solid. So I assume it's a configuration error on my part somewhere.
