General :: Edit Grub Menu From Initial Grub Screen - Possible To It's Own 'e' Option Or 'c' From Grub Command Line?
Nov 20, 2010my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

Dec 21, 2010I have the same problem with an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Whenever I attempt to boot (Lu|U)buntu from a live CD/USB, on most computers. it works just fine. However, on two computers, the live media starts off just fine with the main menu (Try Ubuntu without installing, etc.), then, when I select any option except 'Boot from First Hard Disk', after a few seconds, the CD stops spinning or the USB loses power. I'm convinced it's not a problem from the media, since it works perfectly fine on some computers.

Mar 22, 2010I have Windows XP as well as Ubuntu in my desktop. I would like to temporarily disable XP for a month or so, so that One cannot see Windows XP appearing in the grub menu list or during the boot. Is there is any option to edit the grub menu?

In both cases, Ubuntu completed the installation process. Upon reboot, we have the options to choose between Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, once we enter into Grub, only the Windows XP option shows.

Jun 21, 2010i have a dual boot. i loaded 9.1 on one disk and windows xp is on another. grub worked fine. i downloaded 10.4 and i must have selected the wrong option cause when i restarted it dropped me into a shell. i reloaded 9.1 and wiped out 10.4. again i must have selected the wrong option cause i get the grub menu with an option for windows but nothing happens. 9.1 comes up alright and i can select windows office files from ubuntu.

Windows Recovery Environment (loader)
With no Vista option.
When I run the recovery environment however, it runs just my regular vista boot would have. Is this just a name issue? Ideally I would like to have my Vista option back.
Ubuntu :: GRUB Menu Showed The Memtest86+ Option?
May 7, 2011recently performed an upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. when I rebooted, my GRUB menu showed only the memtest86+ option, rather than the usual options for Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch, and WinXP (which I haven't booted in a very long time, so I am almost 100% sure that it is not WinXP's fault. I was able to boot using a Live CD, and when I checked grub.cfg, all of my boot entries were still there. However, when GRUB itself actually loads, only memtest86+ is in the menu. I also checked that I can still boot by editing the memtest86+ option in grub so that it matched the entry for Ubuntu in grub.cfg, and it still booted correctly. However, I am curious as to why my GRUB is now forcing me to manually enter the boot entry on each boot. Here is my grub.cfg:

Jan 10, 2010I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot system with Windows XP very carefully. Unfortunately, though given the option to boot Windows at the grub menu, when I select it, I get an error. Booting Ubuntu on my other partition works just fine, no issues.
I also attempted to access files from the first partition in Ubuntu using gparted, but once I mounted it, all of my files were not present. I only saw manufacturer files, and many files and folders I didn't recognize.
Also, as an aside, my laptop monitor is suffering from occasional black-outs during use. Ubuntu gave me a little toolbar flag, telling me to go to a website and use the patches given to fix it, but I'm not quite so sure where to input the given patch text. Do I really need to go through the trouble of finding the source code, etc., or is it more simple?

General :: Grub - Error 17: Cannot Mount Selected Partition
Dec 15, 2010 i ran into this issue only because i wanted to learn. I was reading the book, linux troubleshooting and decided to give it a try.
1) I went to /boot/ and moved vmlinuz (kernel file) to my home directory. (/root/)
2) I booted, it didnt boot (as expected) and now the troubleshooting part begins.
3) i entered to grub config mode using c
4) When i press root (hd0, (tab) it gave me 2 partitions. hd0 which is my boot partition hd1 which is my '/' partition. Please keep in mind its LVM and not a physical partition
5) If i do this, root (hd0,1), and press boot, it gives the following error Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
During my research i found that, LVM is not supported by grub, so kindly confirm me this ? is this the reason i am not able to access my root partition ? i am doing this on vmware so no issues, but just for the sake of learning, can someone tell me some way of restoring it without using any rescure disk (livecd, liveusb etc) ?

Jul 28, 2009I am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):
# dd if=mbr+part.bin of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=446 conv=notrunc
2. By using the FEDORA rescue CD, I installed grub unto the new hard drive as follows:

reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

General :: Remove Phantom Ubuntu OS Option In Boot Menu?
Sep 10, 2010Originaly I had Win7 and Ubuntu (Ub) set up OK in dual boot. The Ub was on a seperate drive in its own partition - then the darn drive failed. Without reinstalling Uu I still get it as an option in the dual boot menu. If I do reinstall Ub I end up with a 2nd Ub option. How can I get the boot menu to show Win7 only, so that I can re-install Ub with only 1 entry in the boot table?
I have tried using bootrec.exe from the command line in Win7 recovery mode but that does not fix things.

1- I want the first option to be Windows XP (which is on the second HD) and I want the text to be Windows XP instead of Other. This option should be the default (so if I didn't press anything it will boot from xp).

Apr 19, 2011I've tried everything to solve this, been browsing the forums for the last 2 days and no solution has worked.So I got a new netbook (Samsung n150 dated 03/2011) it had ubuntu 10.10 installed but I already use ubuntu on my macbookso I'm trying out knoppix, I booted it from usb and ran the HD installer, it gets through all that and then installs grub ok, but when I reboot I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"Things I already tried:*Grub setup (grub, root (hd0,1), setup (hd0), quit) and every variation.*I tried removing the usb and setting the HDD back to first boot in the bios andthen changing the menu.lst accordingly, still I get error 17.Below is the information just after boot with the usb still plugged in and set as first boot in bios.fdisk -l

Feb 15, 2010Just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and had windows 7 ultimate installed prior to installing Ubuntu. When I installed Ubuntu I partitioned off a section of the HDD that windows is installed on and installed to that new partition. Ubuntu boots and works great but ever since installed if I select windows to boot it just reboot PC all together. Tried making windows default and it booted windows once then went back to normal. I tried to follow suggestions on different post about running "sudo grub" but it is not a command according to my terminal.

Sep 3, 2010I have installed ubuntu 9.10 after the windows xp os, and then my grub.cfg file only contained information about linux.. my windows os couldnot be booted..But thats fine because i now work only on linux, so I could normally boot into ubuntu..
But now i tried to install fedora 12 on that partition on which windows was installed, and i set the space of that partition as "free". And then something went wrong, and i could not install fedora.
Now wen i boot into the normal ubuntu linux from the local hard disk, this error appears on screen - "No bootable media present, enter bootable disk and press enter."
I can boot into the installed os by first booting from a live cd, and selecting the "boot from local disk" option. But i cannot boot without a live cd.
I also reinstalled grub-pc package, but no change.
