I recently installed ubuntu studio 8.04 on a new partition and now ubuntu 9.10 is no longer showing up in the grub boot menu. How can I boot into ubuntu 9.10 and how do I edit the grub menu so it shows up again?

I have got ubuntu netbook edition installed alongside windows xp and after some custimising i can now only chose the ubuntu option and no others. Can i set settings back to default settings?and how? I guess it would be via terminal commands

View 5 Replies View RelatedHas anyone tried that? I have a Dell Studio 1555 running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 for about 2 years with almost no issues but I plan to upgrade it straight to 11.04 64-bit (using fresh install because I also want to format the HDD and partition it in a different way).
What I'm reading in the web is though a bit discouraging as there seem to be a lot of issues with 11.04 running on this particular Dell model. Quite a shame as Dell is supposed to provide good experience on Linux since they had been selling laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled (or they used to...).
Well here's what I've done in grub.confpassword --md5 BLABLABLA /grub/admin_menu.lstNow that I enter some password, I can go to that menu and run my pvt. OS.But how to get back to original (or say public or default) grub menu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
After installing Ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with Windows 7(not inside Windows 7) and restarting I come to a blank screen with a blinking underscore.I assume the GRUB boot loader is missing or i installed Grub in some other partitions. Now i unable to enter in to Windows 7 OS.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario CQ60 with Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card. When I first installed Windows 7 followed by Karmic in dual boot I could boot into both OS. Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

The XP partition ceased to boot (in fact when it seems to start Windows, it re-boots once and again). I can access the XP partition from Ubuntu 9.10
If I boot with the WXP CD and reinstall it in the original NTFS partition, will it wipe the boot menu out, loosing any chance to boot in Linux?
I have multiple drives on my system and I decided to put Ubuntu on my main 1TB hard drive. I install 9.10 on my drive and it partitions half of it to Ubuntu and install is successful. Well, on reboot I get nothing. I switch to my secondary drive with windows on it already and the dual boot menu appears? Apparently it installs in on SATA1 and not the drive selected as boot in the BIOS. I decided to leave it this way until recently I needed to use the secondary drive on my other rigs failing hard drive. So, how do I get grub on the 1TB hard drive? I ran windows 7 BOOTREC files and recovered the Windows boot, but I couldn't get Ubuntu to recover with live CD nor the GRUB online help didn't work. Is there a simple way to get my dual boot menu back?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

# dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr+part.bin bs=512 count=1
On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):
# dd if=mbr+part.bin of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=446 conv=notrunc
2. By using the FEDORA rescue CD, I installed grub unto the new hard drive as follows:

reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

Is there anyway to install Aptana Studio in Ubuntu 11.04 other than eclipse plugin, like an actual install into the system. Currently all I can do is run it from a folder but that is starting to get very tiresome.

I had Vista loaded on my computer, then loaded the BRILLIANT ubuntu onto a second partition! This gave me the GRUB boot loader which is fine.My 2 points are;1. Can I change the position of the items in the GRUB loader so if no keys are pressed it loads Windows automatically?? (Its for my sons computer!!) My Windows installation is in /dev/sda1, and my partition with all my files are in /dev/sda5. I am not sure if that is supposed to be that way, but in the "Drive/Partition Info" section it say sda1 starts at 63, while in the "Boot Info Summary" section it say that sda5 "starts at sector 63" too.
I have downloaded ubuntu studio 10.04 and burn it into a cdrom. Is there any way in installing some software packages in ubuntu studio 10.04 in my ubuntu?

Truecrypt bootloader is in the MBR
The Truecrypt bootloader will boot other loaders if esc is hit, I can choose to boot /dev/sda5 and grub loads, but no menu is displayed, all I get is a GRUB> cli. I've reinstalled Grub to /dev/sda5 using the chroot method outlined in the Grub2 info page on this site, but it always results in the same outcome of ending up in the Grub cli. I can chroot that install and attempt a update-grub, but all i get is "cannot find list of partitions!" attached is the boot_info_script results.
Once upon a time I had Maverick Meerkat installed on two drives. Now I've used Disk Utility's "Format Drive" to erase it and remove the Master Boot Record partitioning on one of them. Yet I still have to go through the GRUB menu each time I start up my computer, as if there are multiple bootable drives. I've read that 'sudo grub-install /dev/sdb' might work, but that only seems to reset the bootloader, not remove it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an external USB drive with Mint9 Fluxbox installed on it. At one point, I wiped the drive and set it up using GPT instead of MFT, then partitioned the drive in GParted and installed the OS.
This setup was working fine, but now I have a new laptop, and the OS won't boot. I just saw the errors, "No such partition: UUID=xxx", "Could not find kernel, hit any key to continue". So I attempted to reinstall GRUB via terminal, but saw errors saying that GPT requires a grub_bios partition. So I made a 1mb partition at the end of the drive, (the only unallocated space without moving anything) and selected the grub_bios flag.
I was then able to reinstall Grub without incident, rebooted, selected the USB drive to boot first in bios, but still no Grub menu!?! It just boots from the next device in the bios list.
I'm currently using Crunchbang on a USB stick, which is where I'm running terminal commands from. I want to be able to boot from my external drive on any computer.
