I'm running a dual-boot with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP with GRUB. There are a few corrupt files on my XP filesystem, so I scheduled Windows to run Chkdsk on restart. I restart, select Windows in GRUB, and the screen shows saying it will run Chkdsk, press any button to cancel. Without me touching any buttons, it cancels it.

General :: Automatic Reboot And Revert Grub Config On Boot Failure?

Dec 3, 2010

I have a working RHEL in /dev/sda1 and a newly constructed Ubuntu Lucid in /dev/sda2. I'm going to edit the grub config and reboot the server into the new Ubuntu. However, I'm not 100% sure that the new distro can boot. And since my only way to access the server is via SSH, I need the network to be up too.

How can I configure Grub and Ubuntu so that if the server fails to boot, it will automatically reboot into the old RHEL? Currently using GRUB 0.93, but I can upgrade it if needed.

Update: In the end, no boot failure occured. But without the insurance from this, I wouldn't have attempted [URL]..

General :: Windows Taking Over From Grub?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm trying to dual boot a server with Windows 2008 R2 and RHEL 5.4. I've done these dual boots 20 or more times in the last few months, and never had a problem. (This is the first time I've tried it with R2, mind you.) I do the normal install Windows on one drive, then install RHEL on another. The first time it reboots after the install (which is still part of the install, as it's my kickstart script prompting the install and it still has post to run), it goes to the grub menu, and I can select RHEL and it boots into it fine. After that, if I reboot it just goes directly into Windows, without seeing grub at all.

I've tried pressing esc, shift, various things in case it's hidden, with no luck (also, I have a 30 second timeout set and it's not sitting there that long). I've tried editing the grub.conf to remove Windows entirely, and it still just goes into Windows. I've reinstalled RHEL 3 times (yay for kickstart files!), and this exact behaviour happens every time. Does anyone have any idea of what might be going on here

Only one drive in this machine (sda) and I remember going through the GRUB settings during the install. How to get a bootloader working now because in my linux experience (since RH5) it has always just installed the bootloader and worked. Apparently ext4 is bunk for me and when using LVM settings. Ubuntu :: Getting Grub Error 17 On Reboot Attempt?

Aug 26, 2010

Well about a week ago my computer acted a bit funny and upon attempting a reboot I hit grub error 17, and really haven't been able to make it past it. A had my original OS on it and get some files off and backed up at least. Backing up, I've only used a single OS of Hardy Heron. I don't understand why I'm being affected by this error when all I have is two harddrives that are used as unbroken partitions. Best advice I've used is to use a live disk, however the one I've currently got is for Lucid Lynx. I'm not sure whether I need to go and get the old version of a live disc since all I want are my files.

I'm content to update to the newer version (though part of me wants to wait for the next one since it's only a few weeks away.) If I could get my system running as it was that'd be great too. I believe the harddrives are fine since both are recognized in bios, just when running the live disk it asks if it wanted to install it or try it first. When running in the trial of Lucid, I can see the second harddrive and access files as I could on Hardy, but I can't see the main one. I really don't know what to do and am considering just starting over and cursing the loss of the data I want to preserve.

Ubuntu :: Xubuntu (or GRUB) Loads Only After Reboot?

Whenever I power on my Xubuntu machine, GRUB does not load until I reboot. Once the system is running, I can reboot back into Xubuntu but if I power down GRUB does not seem to load. I've got the system to power on at 8am every morning but the fact that I have to reboot it is really annoying me.

Update:
Reinstalled GRUB to the master boot record of my first hard disk and it solved everything. I had to follow the second part of this guide to get it to work:

General :: Windows 7 - Install GRUB To A Partition And Not MBR?

Sep 12, 2010

I am trying to dual boot Windows and Linux. I would like to continue using the Windows bootloader in my MBR.

I installed Windows 7 first. During the install I left some unallocated space that I intended to install Linux.

I found this guide: [URL]

It says to install GRUB to the bootsector of the partition that Linux is being installed to and not the MBR of your hard drive.

I am trying to install Linux Mint Debian to the second partition. When the installer gets to where you are asked to install GRUB the only option is to install GRUB to /dev/sda which I believe is the MBR.

I decided just not to install GRUB and proceeded with the installation.

How can I install GRUB to the bootsector of my Linux partition?

General :: Uninstalling From Windows 7 PC - Grub Error 22

Mar 15, 2010

I installed Backtrack 4 and it is set up as a dual boot with my Windows 7 x64 bit. I want to uninstall Backtrack because I am going to put it on a different computer. The problem is - I can't do it. My laptop is an Asus K61IC, and it doesn't come with an installation CD, because the OS was factory installed. It comes with a recovery wizard instead, which gives me the options to 1) recover to first partition only, 2) recover to entire HD, and 3) recover to entire HD with 2 partitions. Because of Grub and it asking for me to choose what operating system to boot when I start my computer, when I recover Windows 7 to the entire HD and try to boot, it gives me Grub error 22. I need to fix my MBR so that the grub menu is also deleted and all of Backtrack 4 is removed, actually letting me back onto my Windows 7. I need a way to delete the Linux partition, and fix the MBR, but I don't know how to do that because I don't have an installation disk.
