I am on Mint8. Discovered that the error message was caused by the program thinking that the true date was 10 days ahead of the date that shows on the display. And the incorrect date goes right along, changing every 24 hrs, the true date never catching up. Short term solution was to set the date 1 yr ahead which then showed on the display. Long term (?) solution fsck eventually worked. We shall see how long.

This only started happening quite recently - before this I could boot to Linux quite happily.
I am trying to mount a file image, like this
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps
But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?

I've been using Ubuntu since 7.04 and I think this panel disappearance phenomenon has become more frequent in recent distros. Since I installed 10.04 nearly 2 months ago, I've had to rebuild gnome twice, the last time today.
I've looked at some (maybe most) of the forum posts on this issue and there doesn't seem to be any clear reason why the panel drops out as it does, not that I can see anyhow. Ubuntu developers, please don't get me wrong. I respect your work and will certainly stick with Ubuntu, no doubt about that. But the evaporation of the panel is a niggling issue, having to restore and then setup the panel with the file browser and all the rest.

I have been having problems with filesystem corruption on my eeepc 1000H for a long time now. I have tried using different filesystems, kernels and distributions (arch, slackware) to no effect. I am starting to grow suspicious that this problem lies somewhere else, as I haven't seen anyone else having similar problems in such a variety of scenarios.
I have tried testing my ram using memtest86+, didn't come up with anything after a full run through. I also have tried using e2fsck -c to check for bad blocks, it finds none. I had a go at using smartctl but wasn't really sure what I was doing. I did a long test and it came up with nothing anyway.
This problem is in addition to the problems I've been having with my intel graphics chip and KMS. A lot of the time there are lockups when booting into X, which can only be gotten out of by a hard reset. This is sometimes what causes the original filesystem errors. I've stopped messing around with KMS for now to eliminate this but my current system in unbootable. I'm guessing my disk is wrecked but have as yet seen no definitive proof. Can anyone recommend anything that I should do?
I am currently on ext4 with a custom kernel 2.6.33-rc6 (the stock kernel shipping with slackware does not have the elantech extension for psmouse included). When I was using arch, I was just using the stock kernels.
I had an interesting problem with my workstation this morning. When I booted the system I got a message that the sda1 filesystem was corrupt. I ran fsck on all the unmounted filesystems and found them to be clean. I then booted from the F12 live CD and checked the file systems again using 'Disk Utility' - everything appeared to be clean. However I still couldn't boot the system. I eventually reinstalled F12 from the Live CD.
Seems to be a bit strange as all the checks I ran showed the file system to be OK.

Although I have been running Ubuntu for about 1 year I still regard myself as a Newbee! I have got away with not knowing anything about the Terminal or Command Lines. I am happy with Ubuntu and have become familiar with the OS and all the software I require. However, I have started to receive an error message which states, DISK FAILURE IS IMMINENT Does this really mean that my hard disk needs to be replaced or could there be something else that needs "tweeking"? I am running two operating systems: Ubuntu 10.4 and Windows Vista - but am using Ubuntu about 99% of the time. Everything is running OK except for the error message. What is the best approach to address the issue?

I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.

I have search on the net for this problem and i have understand it a little. But my situation is a bit different and because i don't want to format my hard disc i wanna try to fix it. So before a couple months i download ubuntu 9.10 and i installed it a month later. But my computer used to crash all the time and i couldnt use it. So i download the latest ubuntu 10.4 and install it while having windows xp and the old ubuntu 9.10(so i had windows xp, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.4 partitions). Now i tried to delete the partition of ubuntu 9.10 from disc utility. so i have the message i wrote above when i boot. I dont wanna delete my windows xp and ubuntu 10.4. what should i do to stop this message from appearing.
I'm having some trouble with my Ubuntu 10.04. It had been working normally, and now my startup isn't occurring normally. The bootloader shows my Windows install and two different revisions of Ubuntu. Upon letting it load Ubuntu, however, it goes to BusyBox v1.13.3 and says "built in shell (ash)" and presents me with a functioning command line.
I'm comfortable with working on the command line, but does anyone know where to start with this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedSomething very strange happened. Firefox was acting a little strange, so I decided to restart my system. When ubuntu started to boot it showed an error that said filesystem failed to mount. It gave me an "emergency" command line and told me ctrl-D would retry the mount. Why would this happen? I haven't modified any system files for a very long time. It told me to run fsck (I think thats what it was) and that seemed to fix the problem. Just curious as to what could have happened. Anyone else have this problem? Anything I should try to fix so this won't happen in the future?

Any thoughts on recovering this partition or at least gaining enough access to it to backup some data?

I've been trying all the possible solutions I could find and nothing seems to work. I just want to be able to use this computer. I don't care if I lose files, or have to re-install Ubuntu or any of that, if I can just get the thing running again. I've tried re-installing, and booting from the disc etc. none of which have worked. Basically, I just want to erase Ubuntu and re-install it.
I have had a system crash and have no idea why - I have booted up through the cd and are runnign off that but i need to know how to get the information off the hard drive before I attemp to format and start again.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64, with 2T HDD x5 grouped as RAID5 using RAID controller (dell perc 6/i), result in a 8TB disk, and I put it to a single partition in XFS. Just now one light bulb went wrong and caused whole house power fail, sadly during that time I'm copying some data to that partition. After I clear the power issue and turn on the computer, the partition still can mount, so I continue copying, and that gives me some IO error. I assume it is some kind of problem that need a file system check, so I unmount it, and run xfs_repair.
However xfs_repair shows the partition has not been unmount so I restarted the computer. After restarting, during the loading screen the system prompt me that it cannot find the file system, and I pressed 'S' to skip (btw 'M' for manually maintenance, but I didn't try) Then there comes the problem: the partition cannot be mounted anymore. I tried using palimpsest (the disk utility) to check, the partition shows normally (i.e., there's a 8T disk with a single partition in XFS), but when I try to mount it, the first time I click 'mount' results in nothing, repeat click will get an error 'The device is busy: A job is pending on /dev/sdb1'.
Checking the process running I found this:
process 'mount', status 'uninterruptible', command line 'mount /dev/sdb1', waiting channel 'call_rwsem_down_write_failed'.
Also other operations with that partition does not work, such as xfs_repair or mount, will just halt (and the waiting channel is 'get_sb_bdev')
I just flashed/updated my BIOS using the MSI LiveUpdate4 utility under Windows 7. Everything worked the way it was supposted to as far as I can tell. Except that I can no longer boot up under Ubuntu. Windows XP and Windows 7 both boot up fine.
I get the error message:

I never set a root password under Ubuntu so I can't do that. It also said after failing to accept my user/sudo password something about running Fsck manually. So I put in the Ubuntu installation CD and am running it live. It comes with Fsck but there are quite a few options and I don't want to choose the wrong one and end up loosing data.
I have a dual booting newly installed 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my machine. It was all fine until today. Now when I boot into Ubuntu, I see the error Failed to mount root filesystem. I cant remember any significant changes during the last session. One thing I remember is I upgraded the system using the update manager which asked me to choose an option for grub boot loader. I opted for its upgradation. After the upgrade, I was able to work with Ubuntu for a few more sessions. Windows XP works very fine.I checked other threads which suggested running fsck, but it did not help. fsck does not report any errors.
