May 20, 2011Getting this error seemingly randomly at login:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The last error message was:
Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
I thought I might be logging in to fast, but it happened again when I had waited several minutes.

Oct 12, 2009Several of the the items in the menu System --> Administration do not function. They say they are starting but fail to come up then disappear of the task bar. Is there anywhere i can look to see why it has failed to come up?

Jul 27, 2011I'm trying to run BoxBackup to sync a couple active servers to a data server. I installed the server and client, making sure to follow the instructions closely with all the certificates. The problem is the service daemon on the service won't even start. The service manage reports: "bbstored dead but pid file exists" (basically, tried to instantiate the process, but it died due to faults).

Feb 26, 2011I have Dell rack server. With the network card of five network ports. But I am just using first one (eth0).
Now the problem:
Its connected the internet and the internet is working fine. I also got update using yum.
When I do ifconfig to check its dynamic IP. It also shows the IP(something like: 192.168.x.x), but if I go to services and try to start DHCPd service its fails. Its not starting at all. And If I go to other computer (Windows 7) and try to ping the dell servers IP, I cannot ping it. So since I cannot ping it from other computer, so no one we can have remote access to the dell server.
I dont understand without starting DHCPd how the dell server is getting the IP address.
So I thought maybe DHCP is corrupted so I removed it using yum and reinstalled it using yum, but no luck so far.

I have a key on my laptop that turns blue when wifi is activated, but it is always red in linux so I guess I need to install some drivers, but I dont know what they are. When I use Windows, it automatically turns blue without doing anything. Also, yum doesnt work as well as its not connected to internet...

Oct 27, 2010I installed Centos 5.5 yesterday and discovered that the hal daemon was failing to start on boot.
The messages showed that the hal daemon was hanging because nss_ldap could not connect to the ldap server. It eventually failed and the system came up multiuser without it.
When I started looking into the problem I discovered that hald was being started quite early in the boot process. It's sequence number was 26 (if I remember correctly). This was even before nscd.
If I chkconfiged it off and booted, I could start it successfully once the system was up.
I changed the sequence number to 98 and bring it up relatively close to the end of the boot process.
This works and it starts normally.
Is starting it as early as 26 in the boot process done for a reason? It seems to me that it should definitely not be started before nscd. Does it matter that I moved it to the end of the boot process?
CentOS 5 :: Cancel A Frozen Startup Daemon?
Mar 25, 2009I used my boot disk in rescue mode to solve this, but I would really like to know how to do this the easy way.
Question: when I am booting up and getting all those "OK" green remarks, how do I cancel a daemon that freezes instead of giving me an ok or failed? I have tried <Ctrl><C> with no joy. I have tried dropping to interactive mode ("I") and bypassing the bad daemon, but interactive mode freezes when I go to start GDM, so no joy there either.
CentOS 5 :: Gnome-settings-daemon And SHMConfig ?
Oct 4, 2010Setting up CentOS 5.5 on my laptop. After installing the synaptics driver, I am able to get a functioning X session without any problems (I'm using startx for testing). There are however two problems: 0/ mouse cursor is slow as snails and 1/ GNOME is fouled up.
- I've tried enabling SHMConfig in my xorg.conf file, and have also tried the HAL thing here. Either way synclient tells me to jump in a lack. I should be able to set suitable adjustments in xorg.conf, but running synclient -l to see what it's currently using would be much faster than hours of trial end error. As Google totally fails to provide anything helpful and I see nothing handy in documentation beyond the 1-line edit to xorg.conf I've already done, how in the universe do I actually enable SHMConfig to synclient's satisfaction? EDIT: scrolling doesn't work either, so access to synclient is even more important; on the upside I have manually tuned the mouse speed by T&E.
- GNOME was installed through the "GNOME Desktop Environment" and "GNOME Software Development" groups (yum groupinstall GNOME*) after net' installing CentOS. It has been startx'd through gnome-session. On startup I get a string of Windows: one is a dialog saying that there was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon with a last error message of "Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session". The other two are dialog windows gripe about mail notification. Several icons are missing but gnome otherwise works fine, as long as I do nothing that requires SETTINGS. Searching the web and documentation hasn't helped here either, so how the flub do I fix that?
I expect to be using blackbox or something lighter most of the time, but as GNOME is the default.... it better be working!
CentOS 5 Server :: Can't Start Mysql Daemon
Jul 26, 2011I'm trying to install ispCP and i need to start mysqld but it won't seem to start. I'm somewhat of a nooblet to linux (have a year of VPS 'experience', but nothing too fance) so bear with me.
When i run "service mysqld start" it fails with the error: "MySQL Daemon failed to start."
I ran: "tail -n 30 /var/log/mysqld.log" and this is the output;

I can restart postfix normally and it's working normally for a couple of weeks until the next crash. Does anyone have the same problems with CentOS 5.6 and postfix?

Tried with the "basic" hosts file as well, eg with only the localhost lines in it. Both server run centos 5.3, up-to-date.There is no real error anywhere which might explain WHY aisexec daemon won't start. When i start openais manually (/etc/init.d/openais start) it starts without any errors.
