When I start or stop this service using the "service" command all is fine, but it does not start on it's own at bootup. I am currently at a loss to determine why it is not starting. May 11, 2010I want to start a service and a script SiteMonitor.sh at startup.
Here is brief working of SiteMonitor.sh(This script monitors the ip addresses of machines which are using http service of the host. This script checks this after every 5 seconds therefore i have run it at background.)
To start with i have modified /etc/rc.local file.
Here is the content of my /etc/rc.local file.

Aug 9, 2009I recently built a cluster with Centos 5.3 and nodes that used different versions of the w83627ehf sensors chip. On some nodes sensors-detect detected the chip:

But starting lm_sensors returned the error: Starting lm_sensors: No sensors found!
On other nodes sensors-detect did not detect the chip at all: Found unknown chip with ID 0xb073(logical device B has address 0x290, could be sensors)

Mar 19, 2010I'm having a problem getting my MPD service to start during boot. This started a week or so ago. It's no big deal, just a pain. It start fine when I run the script in a terminal. I changed the start priority with update-rc.d. I occasionally get a segfault message in my syslog and messages log. Not sure what it means.

Ubuntu :: Strigi Not Starting But Shows In Task Bar?
May 3, 2010I just upgraded Kubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04. I had problems getting Nepomuk and Strigi to run on 9.10, but finally did. I was using the Soprano backend on that version. Now, it seems that Virtuoso is the new backend, Ok?
I enabled Nepomuk, and Strigi, but the setting dialog in "System Settings / Advanced / Nepomuk" says that Strigi cannot start, could be an installation problem. When I expand the system tray, I see that the strigi icon is listed, and says it's scanning.
Is the warning in the System Settings incorrect, or is Strigi really not working properly? How can I check the status from the command line, and / or restart the daemon so I can read any errors on startup.

Sep 22, 2010Since my desktop (Ubuntu 10.4.1 for now) has no need for anyone trying to ssh into it, I want to prevent ssh from starting as a service when I boot up.
If I type: sudo update-rc.d -f ssh-agent remove
in terminal, will that stop the service for all boots (until I run: sudo update-rc.d ssh-agent defaults -- in terminal)?
I've already removed (unchecked) ssh agent key from my startup applications

OpenSUSE :: Nfs-client Service Very Slow To Start Or Not Starting?
Oct 6, 2010The nfs-client service isn't starting after boot up. This is causing problems with the user as they cannot access the remote folders on the server. The PC is a Thinkpad X60s with oS11.3 and KDE4.4.4. The problem started about a week ago after some updates (new kernel update, kde4 updates and some system files) were applied on the laptop.
After logging in none of the remote folders are available. Checking the nfs-client service under Yast>System Services (Runlevel) shows the nfs-client service is not running. If I enable and start the service I get the pop-up confirming the service has started but still cannot access the remote folders even after issuing a mount -a. Opening Dolphin just opens a blank grey window which needs to be terminated.
Trying to restart the nfs service using su -c 'rcnfs restart' sticks at Starting NFS client services: sm-notify Just leaving the PC for 10-15mins eventually sorts itself out and the remote folders become visible. I cannot see anything obvious in the logs so am a bit stumped.

When I do chkconfig --list my service is listed there.

Mar 15, 2010Once I select Ubuntu 9.10 from Grub, it shows the logo, the logo disappears, a jet black screen shows with 2 horizontal white dashes appear at the top.
I recently uninstalled Firefox 3.6 pre using synaptic to go with the stable Firefox 3.6 installed with the PPA repository that was given in the Ubuntu wiki. It installed and ran fine but when I rebooted, ubuntu wouldn't start.
I went into recovery mode a few times, tried to fix any broken packages and when it said it was fixed, I tried rebooting and the same error occurred. I also tried to use dpkg-reconfigure for the xserver-xorg and then ran startx but x didn't load properly. Some more debugging and a few driver errors came up involving intel so I installed a package which fixed that.
Ran the dpkg-reconfigure again and ran startx. This time x loaded but it was a jet black screen and I had to hold ctrl + alt and hit a few F keys to get back to the prompt.
I understand this could be a xulrunner error so I tried reinstalling xulrunner-1.9.1. I also rolled back my repositories to get the Firefox 3.5 branch and I installed the original Firefox 3.5, ran firefox --version to make sure and I finally have that back installed.
I tried rebooting and running the OS normally, but again it failed at the same point. What exactly should I do next? Yes, I could reinstall but it's such a small problem with maybe 1 or 2 broken packages, is there anyway I can save my current ubuntu system (as I have made countless configuration changes months ago and I do not want to do it again)?
