View 5 RepliesI'M A NOVICE and some days ago my web server was down (apache issue) and I found the following file called .bash_history in the folder /var/www/ :
cd /tmp
ls
wget [MODERATED]

I heard that the ext file system does not causes file fragmentation. Could some one explain how this is achieved. And how come a file does not divides in to fragments as compared to Windows based Filesystems.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have millions of small chunks of new's and delete's in my program. Even though no memory leak is detected through valgrind or purify, memory grows. But the growth is degrading over the number of times of the execution of the tasks. Can i think that fragmentation plays a role in this?
View 6 Replies View Relatedto start: I am a 100% linux virgin. I have yet to boot once. I have a 1TB external HD bought today (), which I formatted to 32GB Fat32 and the rest NTFS. (The 32GB partition is the second in order) I tried installing 11.4 with the full release DVD, and managed to get through the 'partition' part of the setup without raging about losing valuable internal HD data. I changed / to the 32GB partition, and figured a native format was safer: formatted it in setup as Ext4, and installed after ignoring the under 128GB warning (the machine is only a few months old).
The installation seemed to go well. The loadup was unsuccessful. There were plenty of "fails". I was given a command screen with "Login:" and after, "Password:". It seemed to take the Login, however the correct password echoed back a "Login module failed" or something similar. Interestingly, an incorrect password yielded a "Incorrect Login". What I may need to do (?):
1. I did not specify a /home or swap during install
2. ?
3. ?
etc
I told my friend ext3 and ext4 are very fragmentation resistant compared to ntfs and he questioned me as to what happens if a small file was removed from in between other file chunks and then another (larger) file was to be written and it wouldn't fit there; where would it go? His argument was that the ext filesystem does need to defragment in order to get past that and his argument seems logical. Does anyone know the answer to this? (because it actually captured my curiosity)

View 3 Replies View RelatedFor some reason when i write a file to my NTFS-partitioned external HDD the files seem to get severely partitioned. This only happens when writing to it from within Fedora.
Windows Vista doesn't seem to do this.
This image is a screenshot from MyDefrag.
On my other hard drive i have a 7GB file consisting of 1400 fragments.
i'm guessing this is too much fragmented, because it was a completely empty hard drive before it wrote the file.
What could have caused this please? and how can i solve this?
I work with lots of big files >500MB. As ext3 does not provide the extents feature of ext4, I am concerned that some fragmentation may periodically affect disk performance. Noted I understand that using ext4 under these circumstances would be pointless, because the extents feature would be required to be disabled to allow compatibility using ext2fsd at this time, thereby removing any tangible ext4 benefit for my purposes.
Question Would an effective method of disk optimisation and anti-fragmentation be to simply copy all files from the ext3 media partition across to another entirely separate empty backup ext3 drive, before copying them all back over to the ext3 media partition again? Would this mean that when all the files are copied back again, they would be placed back in the 'correct and optimum order', so to speak? PS: I cringe in advance at the n00bs who are likely to reply to this thread with 'ext3 cannot become fragmented'!
I get the following prompt everytime I try to connect a server using SSH.
I type "yes", but is there a way to aovid this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Xterm. While running a prog/command if I scroll up and reading something on the screen, the xterm view resets to bottom if there is some output from the running command.
I tried enabling/disabling jump scroll, asynchronous scroll, scroll to bottom on tty output options of Xterm with no avail. In one way or the other way, the screen is scrolling or resetting to bottom if there is some output to screen.
I want to stop this behavior and the scroll should work as if it is in Konsole. The new output to screen should simply add at the bottom and the current viewing point should remain unscrolled. pls let me know if there is any working solution for this xterm problem.
I have created a linux machine and installed some softwares on it with root user privileges . I used to login with root user credentials for doing the various task.
Later i have realise that this is not the best practice to follow and there should be a new user with less privileges to be created for doing the day to day task.
I have read the steps to create the user but will that new user sufficient enough to do the task that i m doing it through root user?
Will my software allow the new user to work on them?
I would be glad if someone points me to a guidelines on what should be my next step?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI will be setting up a computer for people who have very little experience using computers and I want to limit their ability to break things. I'm thinking Linux is the way to go but I don't know what distribution to use. I don't know anything about their hardware other than it is an old laptop. I don't have a lot of experience with Linux, but I would think that without sudo there is not a lot of things you can break.
What would be a good Linux dist that has everything out of the box? (flash, vnc, office, etc) How should I set up the user account to avoid giving them too much power, yet still allowing the computer to be useable for daily tasks? (Will they be able to update software?) I also want to be able to control the machine remotely since I won't have physical access after I set it up, so I am looking into ssh, vnc, (or a better alternative?).
I would like not check first, and if not ok, then to write the permssisions. Means no use to write endessly on disk if not needed. How to check and fix the permissions to avoid writing (chmod o-rwx /home/*) ?

A few months ago I have setup a server with three hard disks. The partition mapping the disks as follows:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x7ca36fee

Now I have the following problem the LVM file system don't mount properly. If I open the mount point I see only a few files of the LVM disk. If I want to unmount the disk I get the following error:
umount /data/
umount: /data/: not mounted
If I want to mount the volume I get the following error:
mount -a
mount: /dev/mapper/gegevens-Data already mounted or /data busy
I want to run Ubuntu Server Edition just at home, however to avoid having to reinstall it in the future when i upgrade hardware, I was thinking of virtualizing it first. Are there any minimalistic virtualisation solutions available at the moment for this sort of purpose? Or even better a linux distro just for this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows and a Linux machine. In Windows, everytime I visit a site, a lot of cache/history files are created on my machine. I setup my Firefox to don't save anything.but Windows saves a lot of "temp" files, some filenames I opened for example are inserted in registry (like video names). Each video I open in VLC is shown in "Last shown videos". In windows, all files opened can be found at "Recent opened files" as well.
A lot of these privacy configurations can be tweaked (VLC and "Recent opened files" in Windows) - it's a PITA doing it individually, but it's possible - but there isn't a guide to these "internal" privacy traces that are left on Windows installation (inserted in registry for example) In Linux, I just know there are these problems in app level (like VLC), and in "system level "(like bash_history).
is there a complete guide to avoid undesirable traces of what I did/watch/used in my Windows machine? (Delete everytime the PC is restarted, or even avoiding recording these info at all). (I'm mainly interested in config made by Windows itself when installing software and writing to registry. A guide with configuration guides to different types of software is a bonus, I know it's impossible to have a complete guide for it).I'm not interested in a VM machine, since I want to be able do control these issues in my own host and understand the privacy risks involved.
I have a new Ultra 27 running debian and i cannot see the second internal harddisk any ideas what to do to rectify this.
