I want to run Ubuntu Server Edition just at home, however to avoid having to reinstall it in the future when i upgrade hardware, I was thinking of virtualizing it first. Are there any minimalistic virtualisation solutions available at the moment for this sort of purpose? Or even better a linux distro just for this?
View 3 RepliesA week or so ago I ran an aptitude safe-upgrade and while it was updating mysql I suffered a power-failure. Now, this never really happens in Holland but of course this once it happened at the worst possible time.
I've tried a lot of different things to get mysql working again, but am running into all kinds of problems. First mysql won't shut off properly (it does startup with the computer but I can't connect to it at all) during an aptitude purge. If I kill the process mysql seems to purge properly, but I guess this is not the case because I wasn't able to install it then.
Things seem to have gone a bit more smoothly this time, however:

I have a home server running Ubuntu 10.04. I want to replace the motherboard and CPU without reinstalling the OS. I read a long time ago that this would sort of work on Windows XP, but with stability issues. However, I have a hunch that on a modern Linux there shouldn't be any problems.

I recently built a basic server computer for home use. (this will be for media, documents, music, etc) I have a basic amd mobo, cpu, and dvd drive. I have Ubuntu server 9.10 installed on an 8GB SD card that is attached to a usb dongle. The os loaded just fine And as a storage drive i have a seagate 1TB hard drive.
Then i got to creating shares in samba. I got to editing the smb.conf file and i couldn't figure out how to setup the shares (where exactly the 1tb Hard drive is, how to create directories and what not) Then i realized i needed to format the HDD! but when i go to run fdisk to finally do it, it tells me that it is "unable to open /dev/sda/"
Now i don't know a whole lot about linux as you can tell, but that is the whole reason i set this thing up is for a big learning experience in both linux and network setup.
To sum up, how do i format the 1TB HDD, and how would i set up samba so i could administrate it from my other computer (SWAT is what i've read about)

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently aquired server with TWO hard drives.For reason unknown (hehe) i installed unbuntu server on both hard drives.This is causeing me some problems, and i would like to wipe everything and start over, would like to put unbuntu server on one hard drive and use the other for free space.P.S I have had Unbuntu server run succsessfully i am just unclear on how to clear a hard drive of any OS.Oh did i mention the first time i used linux was 3 days ago? Since open office is now bought by oracle I am confused about the state of the latest version of OO version 3.2 I think. Would it be legal to install that version on a computer. Oracle perhaps made a bummer with this. The real dev community is thrown out and we are again looking at corporate greed taking precedence for their own profit rather than development of technology. I have high hopes from libre office but then one more open source product (it was not sun's to begin with remember) being swallowed by a corporate.

All the howto's I've read so far tell you how to set up certain things, but I don't know what I actually need to set up.Rather than asking the same questions all over again on a forum like this, and generally being a bit of a noob, I wonder if there's a resource somewhere that someone could direct me to in order to know what I need to do to set up a fileserver.

I upgraded as an option in ubuntu studio's update manager. not sure if studio was ment to be upgraded to natty but it was in the manager, as studio is still 10.10 maverick. regardless the results have been disastrous. i am running into problem after problem as apparently many users are.
i had recently done a fresh install of ubuntu studio maverick which seemed perfect. as i was still setting up and restoring until i noticed the option for natty. so while i'm still at it i think i'm going to reinstall 10.10 this is the first imperfect ubuntu upgrade i've experienced but linux still rules.
I've moved a web site from one server to another.I'm also moving the domain name to the new server.In Apache I've got the web site configured up and running with no problems. What I'd like to know if this is possible. I'm wanting to avoid a complete web site rewrite. I've looked into mod_rewrite but I don't think this is right.I only want the web site to look aesthetically pleasing. So if it's not possible so be it. View 4 Replies View RelatedThis may actually (likely is) be two issues. But since both are happening since I did a reinstall (my term I think you all call it a upgrade 11.04-11.04) I thought I'd lump them together first.
My dell Inspiron mini has (of course) a touchpad and the wireless adapter is AR9285. The touchpad is not being recognized (although in a brief boot up into windows 7 it is fine there). I've tried adding backports, as I found in the documentation, but I'm lost. The wireless adaptor is being identified but the network is being shown as unclaimed. It too worked in Windows, so I'm fairly sure that although both worked fine after initial install, something was lost in the recent upgrade.
My problem is I don't know what to do for either issue next. Most of the documentation is on earlier Ubuntu releases (not 11.04) and I am not ready to backup in order to do a clean install right now. I have a new install I'm cleaning up and a clean reinstall that I just finished and am reloading backed up files onto. I'm hoping I'm missing something simple on this one...just once that would be really nice! So any quick answers? Do I need to split them into 2 issues and post elsewhere?
I would like to set both user and group permissions permanently to be 'rwx' (read-write-execute). I would like these rwx settings for all the future files and folders.
I tried umask 002, chmod etc, but they don't set it for future files.
I have a server that only runs durring the hours the house is asleep, to avoid bandwidth hogging. I know there are ways to prevent bandwidth hogging, but I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. My other goal is also to reduce power and cooling costs. My two computers between them make a very nice space heater in the winter, in summer they make it sweltering in my room.I'm sure it would be trivial to get the sever to power itself off every morning, but is it possible to get it to power itself on at bedtime? If not, I do have Wake on Lan working, is there a windows program that would allow me to send a wake on lan signal every day and then shutdown windows

Its tomcat has a bunch of webapps deployed. MOst of them are old/kept just for the sake of it, and I would like to avoid TC to start them on start / restart. How do I prevent a context to autostart on service start / restart?
I would like to go in the config files and selectively choose the apps to start. When tomcat is started, if anyone needs an app to be started, i would like to do it from the manager. But when I restart TC, i would like my choices to be up and running only.
