Fedora :: F12 & Internal Floppy Drive - Floppy Formatting No Longer Works?

Dec 13, 2009

Is there something weird about the FLOPPY DRIVE on F12? Nothing associated with it works & I can't get an icon for it. Also the FLOPPY FORMATTER no longer works. (mine is an internal drive)- I had some really miner quirks with it in 10 but it worked. I had some workaround launchers that I used until an upgrade semi-fixed it. (It would give a false error that it couldn't run but did. I just ignored it.)

I tried to edit FSTAB to cure a problem of my BACKUP drive showing up twice*** so while I was in there I added the stuff for the floppy & it still doesn't work. If I try to mount it manually, I get the error that /dev/fd0 doesn't exist.I tried to find some info on it & it SEEMS that there MAY be a bug but I'm not sure as the info is a bit confusing as to just what version & such they are talking about. And there was also the problem that all the stuff seemed to be OLD or not related to my problem.I why I quite hacking at my system, is that all my workaround launchers & the formatter say that there are GNOME things missing & they can't run. So I figure that there is something missing or screwy already & that I'd better ask BEFORE I make things worse or actually break something. With the fact that floppies are about gone, it's getting to be not that big of a deal but I still find myself having to use them for repair purposes (albeit, not as much) & it gets to be a bit of a pain to fire up M$ just to do something like this.

*** It appears that the one in FSTAB was the one I needed, so where would the OTHER one be so I can get rid of it? Or at least make it auto mount.

General :: How To Boot USB Via Floppy?

Mar 12, 2011

I have several (small) bootable linux distros on USB sticks, and I would like to use them on several computers, some of which do not have USB boot support. Many of these also do not have a CD drive. In order to get around this problem I would like to create a bootable floppy disk that can load the system from the USB stick (similar to http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/i.../Boot_Floppies). I have found quite a few floppy images on the internet (like the one above), but I haven't yet got one that works and boots the USB sticks that I have (i.e. one that can boot Tiny Core). Is this actually possible (it seems to be, but I haven't got it to work yet) and does anyone know how I can do it?

General :: GParted Stop After Next Operation

Jul 19, 2011

I was messing around with my drive trying some different arrangements of partition to get another one inside. overall the result doesn't differ much from the original but while messing with it I done a lot of steps. I thought GParted will do the minimal number of operations but it didn't. it just traced all my operations one by one. this gave it a few days worth of work. As I don't want to loose data I can't hit cancel but I don't want to wait few days for it. Is there any way to tell it to stop after completing the current operation? It's from natty ubuntu live cd.

General :: Gnome Has No Response To Any Operation?

Nov 4, 2010

I run SUSE on my machine for a year, but I'm really a newbie on Linux. In the system monitor it states:SUSE LINUX Release 11.2 Kernel Linux 2.6.31.5 -0.1 -desktop GNOME 2.28.0Last week when I rebooted my machine, I suddenly found my machine had no response to any click or typing. When the cursor move to any icons, they can be highlighted, but when I click them, no response at all. The weird thing is almost every time after I reboot the computer, it can work for a few minutes, then stop working. But if I press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, it can be log out.

I think there must be something wrong with my GNOME, 'cause everything seems working fine when I login IceWM. recover the .config file in my home directory. But I don't have this file in my home directory.

Finally, this is vfat formatted. Should I try to reformat it in ext or leave it as is?

General :: Defect HDD - How To Start PC (No Floppy / CDROM Or USB)

Jan 16, 2011

In case somebody has a PC with
- mainboard ok
- RAM ok
- terminal.. ok
- a defect CDROM = no CDROM
- a defect floppy = no floppy
- a defect HDD = no HDD
- an IDE connector inside the PC
- an USB port but cannot boot from there (BIOS is too old).

Then I would
-> buy a compactflash card (>2GB) approx 10 Euros
-> buy an USB-Compactflash adapter approx 5 Euros
-> buy an IDE adapter for compactflash card aprox 20 Euros
-> ask a friend or a shop to install KNOPPIX on USB+Compact Flash (easy on KNOPPIX 6.2 through a menu "install on flash card")
-> put the compactflash + IDE adapter into the PC and boot from there (BIOS setting must be correctly done; easy job)

Then later buy a small HDD for installing the personal data on it. Has somebody a quicker or cheaper method?

General :: Creating Gauge With Dialog For DD Operation

Sep 18, 2010

I'm writing a script based on dialog and one of it's functions is to perform a restore with dd, of which I would like to show the progress by means of the "gauge" option of the "dialog" utility. I wanted to do this by sending a USR1 signal from time to time to the dd PID, because this results into the amount of bytes already being dd-ed ont the console screen. A simple calculation based on the orginal size would result into a percentage that can be fed to the gauge function of dialog.

The challenge I'm facing now is to launch an external script (I guess with "&" to send it to the background) that sends, let's say every 5 seconds a USR1 signal to the dd PID. That would be no problem, but how do I capture the output of this "kill -USR1" to the original script? I tested this and the output is not sent to standard ouput, so it must be that it is sent to standard error. For now I don't see a way out.

General :: Find The Equivalent Command Of A Gui Operation?

We often require to find an equivalent text command for any GUI operation. Just as an example we click on a folder (say ABC) from the current directory in order to see the contents of that directory. The equivalent command for it to happen would be->

Code:
cd ABC ls Now the thing is that we often don't know what that equivalent command will be. So I want to know that is there any way out to find it. What I want to do is that I shall perform any operation using mouse in the GUI mode(whatever operation it could be) and then I can see a log file to see what I actually did last(rather what the command would have been if I have worked in the text mode)...

I had another unit from the same vendor. He took that back and sent this one after a 24'hour test, but will not answer further communication. Generally I get best results if it has sat shut down overnight, but this morning even that was good for only a few minutes. It does this running XP from the hard disk or Linux from CD.
