General :: Windows To Surf The Web To Avoid Spyware?

May 18, 2010

I would like to use Linux in a VMWare Player window within Windows 7 to circumvent spyware infections. Is this a feasable idea or should I just dual boot?

General :: Avoid "privacy Pitfalls" In Windows?

Jun 7, 2010

I have a Windows and a Linux machine. In Windows, everytime I visit a site, a lot of cache/history files are created on my machine. I setup my Firefox to don't save anything.but Windows saves a lot of "temp" files, some filenames I opened for example are inserted in registry (like video names). Each video I open in VLC is shown in "Last shown videos". In windows, all files opened can be found at "Recent opened files" as well.

A lot of these privacy configurations can be tweaked (VLC and "Recent opened files" in Windows) - it's a PITA doing it individually, but it's possible - but there isn't a guide to these "internal" privacy traces that are left on Windows installation (inserted in registry for example) In Linux, I just know there are these problems in app level (like VLC), and in "system level "(like bash_history).

is there a complete guide to avoid undesirable traces of what I did/watch/used in my Windows machine? (Delete everytime the PC is restarted, or even avoiding recording these info at all). (I'm mainly interested in config made by Windows itself when installing software and writing to registry. A guide with configuration guides to different types of software is a bonus, I know it's impossible to have a complete guide for it).I'm not interested in a VM machine, since I want to be able do control these issues in my own host and understand the privacy risks involved.

Ubuntu Installation :: Avoid Windows 7 Overwritting GRUB?

Jan 16, 2010

Why does Windows (7) [over-]write the MBR [pseudo-randomly]? And what settings can I change to prevent that?

Background : I used to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows-7 on my gaming-laptop, but periodically I run into GRUB-got-messed-up-please-fix-me-again welcome screens. how-to guides on restoring GRUB, but no obvious ones on how to avoid messing up GRUB in the first place. Whats interesting to note; I have another work-laptop that dual-boots Windows XP and Ubuntu just fine (for the past year) and have never run into any GRUB-got-messed-up-please-fix-me-again situations.

My Hypothesis : I have a hunch that Windows 7 writes to the MBR for enabling Restore-Points.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Avoid Windows MBR From Overwriting And Corrupting Grub

Jul 18, 2011

I had opensuse/winxp running.

First windows xp wouldn't boot - then opensuse **** out and I had nothing but a black screen. I spent about two days trying to figure out what in god's name happened. I finally got a copy of winxp recovery disk and it couldn't find the partition that windows was on. That gave me some idea of what was going on. So I tried to fix the matter from partitionmagic. I reinstalled grub making sure that everything was associated properly. I still couldn't get either opensuse or windows to boot after many many different trial and error attempts.

After deciding there was no help for it. I decided to slave my hard drive and wipe to start over. So I booted partition magic from USB and deleted my opensuse partition and -what do you know - windows booted right up. Aside from feeling windows xp's smug grin as the logo appeared - i am perplexed as to how this happened. My guess is that MBR tried to overwrite grub. But I think that the loader was confused and trying to boot from the wrong partition.

I want to reinstall opensuse again. However I want to make sure that this doesn't happen. I need my xp partition for examsoft because wine doesn't seem to work for it and I can't vbox it. So is there some way to make sure that when I do install from DVD on my USB that:

1) repositories are correct
2) MBR doesn't overwrite grub (should I install Grub2 or LILO?)

Slackware :: Protection From Viruses Or Spyware

Jul 18, 2011

I know Slackware probably doesn't require too much protection from viruses or spyware, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help protect it (other than Common Sense).

I ask this for 2 reasons:

1. I'm Paranoid
2. Every now and then I mistype a website I go to and it takes me to a completely different website which frightens me because of my paranoia.

So is there anything I can do to help protect Slackware, and in the rare case I get a virus is there a way to remove it directly?

Is it also possible to use Slackware (currently Master drive) to remove a virus on Windows (slave drive)?

Ubuntu :: Infected Some Data Mining Spyware?

Jun 22, 2011

Recently, I've been contacted through AIM by a showgirl who wants me to watch her webcam. I found it very unusual that I was contacted about this, especially through AIM. Now, I don't actively give out my AIM screen name. The only place I am aware of it being posted up is on Facebook, and even I have my privacy on Friends so no one outside my network could see it... and even then my birthday on Facebook is underaged for this scandalous activity.

So I don't believe my screen name was gathered from Facebook in its use in this.Is it possible that I am infected some data mining spyware? How does Ubuntu deal with tracking cookies? I also consider that my screen name was mined from someone else's AIM account by which I was then contacted.

General :: How To Avoid Auto Scroll In Xterm

Oct 7, 2010

I'm using Xterm. While running a prog/command if I scroll up and reading something on the screen, the xterm view resets to bottom if there is some output from the running command.

I tried enabling/disabling jump scroll, asynchronous scroll, scroll to bottom on tty output options of Xterm with no avail. In one way or the other way, the screen is scrolling or resetting to bottom if there is some output to screen.

I want to stop this behavior and the scroll should work as if it is in Konsole. The new output to screen should simply add at the bottom and the current viewing point should remain unscrolled. pls let me know if there is any working solution for this xterm problem.

Later i have realise that this is not the best practice to follow and there should be a new user with less privileges to be created for doing the day to day task.

I have read the steps to create the user but will that new user sufficient enough to do the task that i m doing it through root user?
Will my software allow the new user to work on them?
I would be glad if someone points me to a guidelines on what should be my next step?

General :: Set Up User Account To Avoid Giving Much Power?

Jul 30, 2011

I will be setting up a computer for people who have very little experience using computers and I want to limit their ability to break things. I'm thinking Linux is the way to go but I don't know what distribution to use. I don't know anything about their hardware other than it is an old laptop. I don't have a lot of experience with Linux, but I would think that without sudo there is not a lot of things you can break.

What would be a good Linux dist that has everything out of the box? (flash, vnc, office, etc) How should I set up the user account to avoid giving them too much power, yet still allowing the computer to be useable for daily tasks? (Will they be able to update software?) I also want to be able to control the machine remotely since I won't have physical access after I set it up, so I am looking into ssh, vnc, (or a better alternative?).
