It seems that karmic has changed the behavior of Gnome's cpufreqselector, so that it requires root authority to make changes, and those changes don't persist after a reboot.

Is there a way to make changes persistent? Is there a way to let admin users change the setting without having to enter a password every time?

Ubuntu :: Avoid Users Writing On The Same File?

Feb 27, 2011

Is it possible to forbid that more then one user open the same file in rw mode? In windows when you open a file that another user is using, there's ad advise and you have to open it in read only mode

I installed ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition on 3 pc (there is not a server-client architecture). I installed samba.(and smbfs)

put the strings:
[name]
comment = ...
path = /...
guest ok = yes
read only = no
create mask = 0777
directory mask =0777

Computers that access to that directory do (on boot, with root privileges)
mount -t smbfs -o username="user",password="pass" //192.168.0.12/name /mnt/cartelladimontaggio

But if two users access to the same file, both are authorized writing on it! So changes made by one are lost when the other save.

General :: Switch Users Without Entering Password?

Mar 12, 2010

I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious.I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users.Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways?(I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password.

General :: Ssh Connection Forces Password Change Then Closes Connection - WARNING: Your Password Has Expired

Feb 16, 2011

On my linux machine, I've enforced a password expiry policy every 45 days. So, today when I tried to ssh to the host, I get the typical "WARNING: Your password has expired". Fine, no big deal. But when I enter my new password and confirm, instead of giving me a login prompt, it tells me passwd all auth tokens updated successfully, then next line, "Connection to <host> closed". I can re-ssh back into that host and all is well from here, but it's a nuisance having to go through the extra step. Is this something in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config somewhere or perhaps a PAM config issue?

General :: Possible To Change Users's Permission To Commands?

Mar 27, 2011

I got myself curious on the possibility to change user's permission to any command, or at least giving other users some command line "power".
It all started a few days ago, when another user here, had a problem so that the computer wasn't answering.
So, after waiting a while, chose to hit the Reset button and start the computer again.
Considering this situation, I thought myself that it would have been better to restart the computer, through command line, on any terminal (F1-F6). Anyway, this user is no administrator, thus wouldn't have permission to use the code...

So, is it possible to let other users to use such commands, in order to safe rebooting the system, without logging as root?
