after update i can not longer see the splash login gui screen but i can only see the log in terminal... works ok but how can I enable the gui login
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis was weird. I just updated my software, through a "setenforce 0" and root shell access since the last update before this left me with a bugged GUI updater, restarted and then logged back in to . . . no users visible in GDM at all. There was nothing but a huge "Other" box staring me in the face. I got the idea to check /var/log/messages and then the GDM greeter logs from there, and here is what I came up with.
/var/log/messages

After this morning's Ubuntu update, the folder I was working in all day yesterday is missing. Also, all icons on the top were missing except the date until I restarted. Folder's still missing though. I was wondering if this is a bug or if it's something with my computer. Also, I didn't look that close at the update, but I thought it looked a lot like the previous update (had chrome in it again).

How do one resolve such a conflict in Fedora?
I have F10 x86_64 installed on my desktop. When I update the packages, everything works well, except curl-7.19.4-6.fc10.x86_64 which conflicts with the installed curl-7.18.2-6.fc8.i386 (Fedora 8!). The problem seems to be that my repo list does not have the info about the F10 i386 repository. This is the report from "yum repolist"
------------------------------------------------------
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
repo id repo name status
adobe-linux-i386 Adobe Systems Incorporated enabled: 17
fedora Fedora 10 - x86_64 enabled: 14,303

I don't want to simply remove the f8.i386 package, because it'll take away a lot of other i386 packages that I'm sure I'll miss in the future (nspluginwrapper- .3.0-2.fc10.i386).
The other solution seems to be updating the curl-***.i386 package. However, I'm somewhat embarrased to confess that I don't know where to find the repository information...
How to solve this conlifts, only pass in x86_64 and fedora 11?

Due to this thread -> [URL] we discovered that my Fedora runs rc kernel. After several tries to update to stable one, no result came. I need your guidance to update my system.
What I tried:
yum update
yum update kernel
yum clean all
The result is the message:

Can I update to PAE kernel? This question is for i686 cause it cannot recognize all ram (4GB total, 3.2GB available). I run x86_x64 but I have this question...
Just did the most recent set of updates late yesterday (kernel and Nvidia). Since the update I cannot get to a login screen - just blinking cursor. In fact the cursor blinks for a bit then disapears only to reappear as if there are repeated attempts to complete a process unsuccessfully.
The update replaced the xorg.conf. I tied a couple of revisions, inlcuding replacing it with the earlier working xorg.conf. No luck.
Hardware is MSI K9N6GM board with Nvidia Geforce 6100 nforce 430.
I've tried the "yum clean all" option to no avail. When I update either with the GUI or command line, I get this error:
[root@joshhardman ~]# yum update

Can I not have the 64 bit and 32 bit packages installed at the same time?
After the last update this morning, which involved, among other things, the updated version of the linux kernel, upon rebooting, the computer froze at the fedora logo.

How do I restore my previous version? I know some people have suggested in the past - just modify the grub.conf but how? When I boot off the cd I only get access to the liveuser disk. I need to have access to my own /boot/grub/grub.conf file.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy main systems runs Fedora 14 x64 with the latest updates (I can't check anymore, but I believe it has the .13.91 x64 kernel). Since this afternoon it became unsuable. First, Opera Browser crashed and the crash report app of the browser showed up. Clicking one of the options there resulted to X crash, if I understood what really went on. No input, mouse or kb, I couldn't go to tty etc. I had to do a hard reset. Next boot proceeded normally up to the point that GNOME desktop is fully loaded. ABRT began reporting numerous kernel oops.
Rebooted again (noticed that init.d fails, so hard reset again) and tried past two kernel versions, same results.
Yum crashes and so does everything. I tried to revert all recent updates with yum history, but yum crashed.
Last update was May 22, and it updated kmod-nvidia.

I just tried to update to kernel 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10 (x86_64) at the suggestion of the gnome update widget, and the process hung. A bunch of other things were updating at the same time, many of which were related to audacity or wine.
I'm not sure just what was being updated, because the option to review which updates are available does not work - when I click on it, nothing happens, but when I take the other choice (install all updates), I take pot luck. It would be nice to be able to choose which programs to update, and to be able to upgrade the kernel independently, but I don't seem to be able to do that at the moment.

So, my second real attempt at getting the 64 bit F11 up and running. I just started adding stuff before all the updates. Crash. So, I'm in the post install phase. Before anything else I installled akmod-nvidia manually, rebooted, and I'm doing yum update right now. I'm hoping many dependencies are solved in the update. There are about 209 line items to update after the initial install. Been updated all afternoon.
So, after the updates are done, I'm heading over to download the different repos I need for the fun stuff. Did you know Java is installed with this first yum update? Wasn't like that in F10. I think I tried 5 times on F10 before I got it right.
my update today failed, because the packages raydium and maniadrive depend on libphp5-5.2.9.so, which is provided by php-embedded, which is (apparently) not in the fedora 64bit repository There does however seem to be an i586 version...

Initial FC12 install worked great, kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 allowed radio kill switch functionality Fn-F11 for wlan and Fn-F12 for bluetooth. The last two kernels have broken that functionality.

I did a "yum update" today. I love how every time, it's like a waiting game to see what broke.Anyway, aside from a weird Nvidia issue that doesn't concern me, the most noticeable problem is that my wireless will NOT connect to my WPA2 network. This laptop is the only machine that changed. The other laptops and wireless devices (smartphones, etc) didn't change. It sees all of the available wireless networks. It attempts to connect, but never does. After a short period of time, a dialog box appears, stating that authentication is required... The password is correct, it just won't connect. Here's a copy of the Yum log... I do see that NetworkManager has been updated, along with the kernel being updated.*sigh*

I installed some updates this morning to my F14-64 system. Both Thunderbird and Thunderbird-lightning were updated. Now, Thunderbird won't start at all. The process is running, but no window ever appears. The only thing I've tried at this point is running 'thunderbird -safe-mode' from the command line to disable all plugins, but the result is the same as just running 'thunderbird' -- it just hangs. It doesn't *appear* to be a plugin problem
