This was weird. I just updated my software, through a "setenforce 0" and root shell access since the last update before this left me with a bugged GUI updater, restarted and then logged back in to . . . no users visible in GDM at all. There was nothing but a huge "Other" box staring me in the face. I got the idea to check /var/log/messages and then the GDM greeter logs from there, and here is what I came up with.
/var/log/messages

After this morning's Ubuntu update, the folder I was working in all day yesterday is missing. Also, all icons on the top were missing except the date until I restarted. Folder's still missing though. I was wondering if this is a bug or if it's something with my computer. Also, I didn't look that close at the update, but I thought it looked a lot like the previous update (had chrome in it again).

View 5 Replies View Relateddifference b/w a login shell and a non-login shell ?
I know that when we use su - <username> we are getting a login shell & when we use su <user-name> we are getting a non-login shell.
Do we get any additional privileges when we have a login shell compared to a non-login shell ?
I got the following problem, when I try to login in into terminal and I write any correct user and its password and the following message is displayed "Module is unknown" and it doesn't get into the prompt.I don't know what else to do I am little lost about this question. Probably it could be something related to pam configuration or something like that.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI did a "yum update" today. I love how every time, it's like a waiting game to see what broke.Anyway, aside from a weird Nvidia issue that doesn't concern me, the most noticeable problem is that my wireless will NOT connect to my WPA2 network. This laptop is the only machine that changed. The other laptops and wireless devices (smartphones, etc) didn't change. It sees all of the available wireless networks. It attempts to connect, but never does. After a short period of time, a dialog box appears, stating that authentication is required... The password is correct, it just won't connect. Here's a copy of the Yum log... I do see that NetworkManager has been updated, along with the kernel being updated.*sigh*

I installed some updates this morning to my F14-64 system. Both Thunderbird and Thunderbird-lightning were updated. Now, Thunderbird won't start at all. The process is running, but no window ever appears. The only thing I've tried at this point is running 'thunderbird -safe-mode' from the command line to disable all plugins, but the result is the same as just running 'thunderbird' -- it just hangs. It doesn't *appear* to be a plugin problem

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 'special script' in my .bashrc file, which I want to be performed only at Login. When I open a terminal (through a gnome launcher <gnome-terminal> as the command) it unfortunately sources .bashrc.
Hence the opening of the terminal runs the 'special script' again.
How can I instruct .bashrc not to do something except when and only when I am logging in? I found a segment of code which is supposed to do what I want but I am not sure of how it works.
Code:
Will this work to put my 'special script' in to ensure that it only runs when it is a login script and not when it is a simple launcher terminal opening?
Having logged in (to Fedora 11) with a terminal session, what command do I give to spawn the Gnome GUI desktop environment? Background: I'm running two Fedora boxes: one local, and one at the other end of my building (on fast LAN). I have full control/ownership of both boxes.
On the local box, I log-in to my vanilla F11 build, and I get the Gnome GUI automatically. Then I can open a terminal window, 'ssh -X -l myself remotebox; cinelerra' to run Cinelerra nicely in local desktop windows.
But sometimes I want to see my typical user desktop for the remote box. Now, IF the remote box is ALREADY running Gnome, I can VNC to it, etc. But, once having logged-out of the remote box, VNC closes and won't show me a GUI login page. (BTW: The remote box usually has no monitor, as well as being out of reach. So schlepping over to logon to it is a real pain.) So, here's the thing: I can login (to terminal session) and can bring up programs in local windows. But WHAT program do I launch in order to bring up Gnome??
This morning I had the notification that there were 21 updates available, and I selected to install them. The system then notified me that a restart was required and I clicked the restart button. After restarting, the system boots to the GUI screen and I select my name and enter the password. It then plays the login sound, the cursor "swirls" and it cycles back to the login screen. Switching over to another terminal screen I can login from the command line.

It's two days now I'm in deep troubles after my last "yum update". The system boots as usual, the graphical login pops up the normal way but no input is handled by either the internal keyboard (the system is a laptop), the mouse pad, the external USB mouse and keyboard.
The hardware itself seems to be working as I can pop up the BIOS menus and even edit the GRUB booting line. But, after GRUB there's no possible input. I've tried to boot the system with the Fedora 11 DVD, rescue menu and then chroot. This in order to run a "yum update" in the hope that the problem was in some broken update. No chance: there's no update.
My questions are:
1. Is there a way to boot Fedora withou any graphical interface from GRUB (or anything else to skip the KDE)?
2. Is there a way to have the (cabled) network activated at boot *before* the graphical login?
3. What the he** is happening to my otherwise pefectly working laptop?
Yesterday, I updated my system with the latest security update and other software updates. Following the update, I am not able to log into the system after restart. As usual, I was prompted with the login page which looks as per normal. I chose my login id and entered my password. It brings me briefly to my desktop showing only my wallpaper (without any upper and bottom taskbars/panels). Then the screen went blank and the login page appeared again.I entered the login id and password, was shown the desktop wallpaper, screen went blank and the login page appeared. This continues over and over and over. After multiple tries and with some luck, I am able to log in as per normal. What seems to be the problem?
1. How do I check the system for errors?
2. How do I check which update has been updated?
3. Is there any way for me to restore to its original state (I migrated from FC10 to FC11 via yum update)?
The only other change apart from the security update is that I installed wine - which has been uninstalled the moment I was able to re-logged in.I attach the details of my grub.conf file below which I hope could be of some useful info.
I am unable to login following an update, Fedora 13. The screen splashes after crond is loaded. The GUI does not come-up. In text mode i can't login as root or other user accounts except in kernel 1. I can access some files via FTP command. Is the password file corrupt ?
View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64 and then also did an update to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64. Both of these kernels I do not get a login dialogue box. I still have the one kernel that works and it is 2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64. The system I am on has a Radeon graphics card, but I don't think the graphics card is the issue since I get the login screen's background, but not the login screen itself. <Later> After messing around with this for a while I came to the conclusion that livna-config-display was messing with the xorg.conf file. Removed it and things seem to be working fine now.

I have a problem with my Fedora 14, only on Fedora 15. Been out of my home for a week, when I arrived home and turned the PC on first thing I made was the update, as usual. But when I reboot or shutdown the PC and when I go to do login, the Fedora get's stuck and doesn't show me the login window to insert my login. Made a clean install and it worked fine, until I made the last updates and it became again, stuck before the login window appears. Is there any update making this? What could be? It must be some update, because when I made the clean install it worked fine, and with the first update also worked fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. After installing the ATI drivers, I had to tweak GRUB to get the nice splash screen back during boot. Then, I installed drivers for my TV Tuner (Hauppauge 2250). The card works fine. However, my boot now goes splash screen to a terminal login for around 10 sec where system messages also show up to the GUI Login screen. I was wondering if there was anyway to return to a normal boot.

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Toshiba 32-bit laptop without any problems.Since the upgrade I am starting to have troubles on this machine. Most others are 64-bit and bar an Evolution issue are fine.In this case, 24 hours after the upgrade the machine wanted to do an Update. It would not allow the update until I fixed some broken packages which I did via Synaptics Package Manager. I then Marked All Upgrades and did the update from there. It was fine until I shut down and tried to log in again.I got the Blue Screen of Death!!!!!! I thought only Windows had this!Anyway, I could not log in. The auto login was not working so I used Other which gave me Recovery, entered my UN and PW, and I got the error message:
HTML Code:
Could not update ICEauthority file
I have searched the forum and some other sites, but none of the ideas can I get to work. I can start the machine using a 9.10 CD in the trial mode, but can not download the files suggested or delete the ICEauthority file, etc...
Whenever i try to login to the terminal (ctrl + alt + F2-F6), it will say "permission denied", clear the screen and start over, i even tried to login with root

It did not work before i upgraded to 12 from 11.
