Fedora X86/64bit :: Mega Lines Of Update Post Install
Jul 11, 2009
So, my second real attempt at getting the 64 bit F11 up and running. I just started adding stuff before all the updates. Crash. So, I'm in the post install phase. Before anything else I installled akmod-nvidia manually, rebooted, and I'm doing yum update right now. I'm hoping many dependencies are solved in the update. There are about 209 line items to update after the initial install. Been updated all afternoon.
So, after the updates are done, I'm heading over to download the different repos I need for the fun stuff. Did you know Java is installed with this first yum update? Wasn't like that in F10. I think I tried 5 times on F10 before I got it right.
I just tried to update to kernel 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10 (x86_64) at the suggestion of the gnome update widget, and the process hung. A bunch of other things were updating at the same time, many of which were related to audacity or wine.
I'm not sure just what was being updated, because the option to review which updates are available does not work - when I click on it, nothing happens, but when I take the other choice (install all updates), I take pot luck. It would be nice to be able to choose which programs to update, and to be able to upgrade the kernel independently, but I don't seem to be able to do that at the moment.
On a fresh install (tried two new installs now) I'm getting an error when I try to go out to the update repositories after the install. I'm getting a "failed to download /suse/setup/descr/packages.DU.gz from [URL] It seems to get about 48% and just hangs there. This happens both if I try downloading updates during the install or if I try doing an on-line update after the system is up.
I have been running OpenSuSE 11.1 with the proprietary VNIDIA driver for a year or so and recently upgraded my internet connection from slow old dialup. I installed some software upgrades this made possible but the process failed on some point (I didn't make a note of the details) and the next time I tried to log on it booted up to the CLI. I tried startx and got the message;
using config file "etc/x11/xorg.conf" no devices detected Fatal server error no screens found giving up xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
I'm using couple of Intel Core i7 based workstations. Here is one such example:Processor: Core i7-870 (Lynfield) Motherboard: Gigabyte P55A-UD6RAM: Corsair DDR3-1600 - 8GB (4 sticks). Graphics: Sapphire Toxic ATI 5850 - 2GB - DDR5Am always used to 32-bit Linux installation. Now I would like to go with the FC14 64-bit on this workstation. My question is:a) How different would be a FC 64-bit compared to 32-bit (8GB RAM issues I faced in Windows 7 32-bit)b) What would be potential problems during the installation and/or post installation. I get these questions in my mind because of Motherboard and Graphics card support and also thinking about applications (issues) on FC14.
I did the big update just now and then another update popped up right away. The update is about creating a common metadata repository. I can't see the official name of the application it's trying to install/update. Anyway, when I try to do the update, I get an error that says, "createrepo-0.9.9-4.fc15.noarch requires yum >= 3.2.29-8 : Success - empty transaction"
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package

Anyone know of a script to do the usual stuff to Fedora that you may want to do following a fresh installation? Such as... install rpmfusion, install the real adobe flash, install sun's java, etc etc. There's plenty of guides/howto's out there, but I'm about to start working on something like 'winetricks', but for fedora. Thought I'd ask to see if anyone has seen something like that first.
I have F10 x86_64 installed on my desktop. When I update the packages, everything works well, except curl-7.19.4-6.fc10.x86_64 which conflicts with the installed curl-7.18.2-6.fc8.i386 (Fedora 8!). The problem seems to be that my repo list does not have the info about the F10 i386 repository. This is the report from "yum repolist"
------------------------------------------------------ Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit repo id repo name status adobe-linux-i386 Adobe Systems Incorporated enabled: 17 fedora Fedora 10 - x86_64 enabled: 14,303

I don't want to simply remove the f8.i386 package, because it'll take away a lot of other i386 packages that I'm sure I'll miss in the future (nspluginwrapper- .3.0-2.fc10.i386).
The other solution seems to be updating the curl-***.i386 package. However, I'm somewhat embarrased to confess that I don't know where to find the repository information...
Due to this thread -> [URL] we discovered that my Fedora runs rc kernel. After several tries to update to stable one, no result came. I need your guidance to update my system.
What I tried: yum update yum update kernel yum clean all
The result is the message: [root@dimitris ~]# yum update kernel Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit Setting up Update Process No Packages marked for Update
Can I update to PAE kernel? This question is for i686 cause it cannot recognize all ram (4GB total, 3.2GB available). I run x86_x64 but I have this question...
I just upgraded from Fedora F11 to F15. Before making this transition, I backed up my system using my Mac's DVD burn hardware and tested the disk on my F11 system. Ok.After F15 install, the DVD backup won't mount. I've tested a generic DVD from a tech book and this will mount. Ok.What else can I do? hfs-tools is installed. I don't know how to go about troubleshooting this.
I am installing Fedora 10 on my system. After the package installation, a post install screen appears. And the installations halts for a long time and does not proceed further.
Just did the most recent set of updates late yesterday (kernel and Nvidia). Since the update I cannot get to a login screen - just blinking cursor. In fact the cursor blinks for a bit then disapears only to reappear as if there are repeated attempts to complete a process unsuccessfully.
The update replaced the xorg.conf. I tied a couple of revisions, inlcuding replacing it with the earlier working xorg.conf. No luck.
Hardware is MSI K9N6GM board with Nvidia Geforce 6100 nforce 430.
I've tried the "yum clean all" option to no avail. When I update either with the GUI or command line, I get this error:
[root@joshhardman ~]# yum update Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit Setting up Update Process Resolving Dependencies --> Running transaction check ---> Package anacron.x86_64 0:2.3-78.fc11 set to be updated ---> Package binutils.x86_64 0:2.19.51.0.14-1.fc11 set to be updated ---> Package crontabs.noarch 0:1.10-30.fc11 set to be updated ---> Package genisoimage.x86_64 0:1.1.9-6.fc11 set to be updated ---> Package icedax.x86_64 0:1.1.9-6.fc11 set to be updated ---> Package shadow-utils.x86_64 2:4.1.4.1-5.fc11 set to be updated ---> Package wodim.x86_64 0:1.1.9-6.fc11 set to be updated --> Finished Dependency Resolution .....
Can I not have the 64 bit and 32 bit packages installed at the same time?
After the last update this morning, which involved, among other things, the updated version of the linux kernel, upon rebooting, the computer froze at the fedora logo.
I am unable to boot my Fedora 14 after last nights kernel update. When I start the boot up and hit F2 the system fails after outputting the line : Starting vservers of type 'default'. At some point the console displays an error message :
serial8250 : Too much work for irq17
How do I restore my previous version? I know some people have suggested in the past - just modify the grub.conf but how? When I boot off the cd I only get access to the liveuser disk. I need to have access to my own /boot/grub/grub.conf file.
My main systems runs Fedora 14 x64 with the latest updates (I can't check anymore, but I believe it has the .13.91 x64 kernel). Since this afternoon it became unsuable. First, Opera Browser crashed and the crash report app of the browser showed up. Clicking one of the options there resulted to X crash, if I understood what really went on. No input, mouse or kb, I couldn't go to tty etc. I had to do a hard reset. Next boot proceeded normally up to the point that GNOME desktop is fully loaded. ABRT began reporting numerous kernel oops. Rebooted again (noticed that init.d fails, so hard reset again) and tried past two kernel versions, same results. Yum crashes and so does everything. I tried to revert all recent updates with yum history, but yum crashed.
Last update was May 22, and it updated kmod-nvidia.

before the reboot Opera 11.11 had crashed and it's own bug report tool came up. Clicking the "do not report this error now" option probably crashed X, because the screen went black and no input was possible (no mouse or keybord, so I couldn't go to tty either. Had to do a hard reset) Bug Reports:Kernel oops report was uploaded

Currently, I have a problem to run firefox 64bit 3.6 under fedora13 when I watch ...... It requires to update Adobe Flash Player. It seems that there is only 32bit library.
Keep trying update the packages (36 in total) and every time I keep getting this error ERROR with rpm_check_debug vs depsolve: kernel-x86_64 is needed by kmod-nvidia-2.6.26.6-49.fc8-173.14.12-5.fc8.2.x86_64 kernel-x86_64 is needed by kmod-nvidia-2.6.26.8-57.fc8-173.14.12-5.fc8.3.x86_64 Please report this error at [URL]
I am loving the opensource driver as I don't have to switch to "discrete" mode in BIOS to get 3D support as I would have to with Ubuntu. (M11x has switchable graphics which is not supported by the nvidia proprietary driver for linux) I need some help with the audio though. In case of Ubuntu 10.04 I had to download and install realtek HD drivers for linux from
[url]
I cannot do the same for Fedora as I get compile errors.

This is after I run the install script as specified in the "Readme".
Here is my system config .
It works. I just realized that sound is heard when the laptop is connected to an external speaker. Internal speakers still don't work. I don't know how to fix this (probably fix the switches somewhere another mixer gui or via command line) and I don't really care as the internal speakers aren't that great and I almost never use them.
Today was an update for the xine-lib-extras-freeworld, version 1.1.16.3. My current version is 1.1.16.2 Kpackagekit and Yum both give an error message when trying to update:
Setting up Update Process Resolving Dependencies --> Running transaction check ---> Package xine-lib-extras-freeworld.x86_64 0:1.1.16.3-1.fc10 set to be updated --> Processing Dependency: xine-lib(plugin-abi)(x86-64) = 1.26 for package: xine-lib-extras-freeworld --> Finished Dependency Resolution
my update today failed, because the packages raydium and maniadrive depend on libphp5-5.2.9.so, which is provided by php-embedded, which is (apparently) not in the fedora 64bit repository There does however seem to be an i586 version...
A package nss >= 3.12.8 is not available. But it is needed by thunderbird update in the course of "yum update". yum exits with RC 1.Is "--skip-broken" the right way to exclude the thunderbird update ("Resolve depsolve problems by removing packages that are causing problems from the transaction")? Or is there a better way to exclude a package? Problem screen output:
---> Package thunderbird.x86_64 0:3.0.10-1.fc12 set to be updated --> Processing Dependency: nss >= 3.12.8 for package: thunderbird-3.0.10-1.fc12.x86_64 --> Finished Dependency Resolution
I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.
I'm running 10.04 (64bit) on an hp dv6915nr and sound has been working great for the past few weeks. When I started the machine up today, it wouldn't play any sounds and the sound preferences show no input devices. Output devices lists simply "Dummy Output".
The only thing that I believe to have changed recently is updates. I installed a set of updates a day or tow ago. I hadn't used anything requiring sound immediately after the update, so I'm not sure if the updates were the issue.
